riding in the rain - good tips so far, I would add

Get some clear safety glasses at home depot if you dont have clear glasses already.
use wet chain lube
use bodyglide even if you dont normally
stay off the center of the lane especially at stop signs or lights (leaky cars drip oil here)

Sorry to hear that Chris. Hope everyone is safe and well.

ARRRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!  2 x 8 hour shifts sat in front of the computer finalising my route for the upcoming race. Doesn't help the laptop graphics card seriously slows down when you have multiple map pages open and kept crashing. Had to go back and adjust some of my route after the release of some banned roads and changes to the check point locations. Added to that the trouble at border crossing points all through Europe from the refugee "crisis" has made me a very nearly pulling my hair out.

On the plus side, I think I've finally sussed out how to get routable maps for all of Europe on my Garmin, just need to get Garmin to start talking to my computer again :/

Have a back up solution for navigation sorted for the trip. I tried out both Google maps and OsmAnd whilst on holiday, and OsmAnd wins by far. Offline maps for all of the areas I need, Voice turn by turn navigation, low battery consumption (20% for a 4.5 hour ride) and a detailed map showing things like road conditions etc. Can recommend it.

Unfortunately all this has took a lot longer than I expected, just need to get Doctors note and insurance sorted and a few more items and I'm good to go, apart from the lack of fitness that it. 8 weeks is enough surely?

Here's the picture of my 'epic' blowout flat tire the other night.  EFP took my wheel to a LBS while I ran on Sat. and he (LBS guy) commented, "Wow, that must've made one h#ll of a noise!"  Why yes, yes it did!  He said it was just because the tube is on the older side and the seam got weak/old/whatever.  Now I understand how/why it blew the tire partway off the rim and jammed the rim against my brake.  I'm just thankful it happened when and where and how it did, it could've resulted in an ugly situation had any one of many variables been different.

I'm in awe how much well-needed preparation is going into this trip!  You've done a great deal of work on your bike, your food/gear plans, and now are covering the bases of navigation/maps as well as a doctor's blessing.  This is going to be one heck of an adventure!  I hope the warnings regarding the heightened threat of terrorism issued by our State Department warning of European travels this summer don't come true or cause problems during your ride.

Whose cat is in the carrier on the Cervelo? I might have to do that with Lilo so she can yell at me during my race next week!

That is my Smudgee! I think I posted (not in Manatees, though) it about 18 months ago with the crazy story. I had taken Smudgee to the vet for "same-day surgery" (removing a broken tooth) and had about four hours to kill way on the other side of town. Stopped in at a new bike shop near the vet's, and ended up with the Cervelo! I had to find a forgiving taxi driver to take both a cat and a bike back home. Posed the picture outside after we got back. As (I think) Yanti said at the time, "At least you didn't go to the bike store and end up with a cat." (But if you know me, that's at least equally likely.)

That does look pretty odd. I have never seen a tube blow out like that

Calling for your help.

I'm at the stage of writing out an interactive route card on a speadsheet.

I have 31 map routes left to do (I've done 1 and part way through another.) but am finding it very time consuming and am quickly running out of time with all the other things I need to do.

If any of you could spare a little bit of time to help I would be very grateful.

The spread sheet/route card can be found here: Route Card. Instructions on what to do can be found on the spread sheet and also here Instructions.

I have filled out Map AB2 as an example already and am starting to fill out map AB3. Ignore AB1 for the time being as the route needs altering.

If you can find some time, reply on this post by quoting this post and declare which map/route you are going to do. the routes are about 50 to 100 miles each.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks.

I NEVER ride in the rain or storms around here. I had to do the NYC tri in the pouring rain/ thunderstorms. Who knew that you could get blisters with bike shoes on? (need some that drain). The NYC roads have LOTS of potholes so don't trust puddles they can hide bigger holes than you think. Photochromatic glasses were a win. Pelting rain was not fun. However, it was cooler than expected and that really helped my subsequent run (using that term loosely).

How was the NYC Tri? Would you recommend doing it? I lived in NYC for 9 years before moving to Dallas and still have a lot of friends/family in the area. I'm always looking for new races to try but having done the 5 Borough Bike Tour and several running races there over the years, I can't imagine it'd be worth trekking all my gear up there to race. Everything in NYC seems to be too congested and as you mentioned, the road conditions there are awful!

Eric. I LOVE the NYC tri. The swim is super duper fast. They have a time trial start. The road is closed to traffic and the run through central park is just lovely. The support is fantastic, too. Also, they have the pros start, then the para triathletes. THEN they start with the old and infirm (me). They have a delay then start the young and speedy. I know it seems odd, but there is never a huge mass of people, but we all end close enough together (outside the pros) so those of us who are at the end never feel the event is over by the time we are done. A bonus for me is that I usually get to run amongst the young, hot men??????????

I just had a phone convo with potential new coach.  No questionnaires, TJ, just chatting.   I think I'll keep my current coach through June since he already made my June workouts and I feel it's only right to pay him for that, so I may as well use the workouts, too and not double up (on coaches in June).  Close to the end of the month I'll figure out a way to break up with him and officially make the switch to the new guy/group.

Hopefully it'll become clear when you follow through from the instructions. Basically you're loading a route in to Gpsies, then you're editing the route. Make a note of the total distance and elevation given on Gpsies of the route you uploaded. Select the town/city you are going to log. Work back from that town deleting the track point (blue dots) from the track back to the beginning of the track until you reach the green dot (the beginning). Then move the green dot all the way to the new town. Refresh climbing and note the new total distance and total climbing figures. Subtract these figures from the original figures you noted earlier. Enter these figures into the spread sheet. Repeat to the next significant town with these new figures until you get to the edge of the route. Hope this makes sense :/ It would be a lot easier to show it.

Where do you see total climbing? I see Elevation but that seems to change even as I zoom in and out (without changing any points).

Yes, I'm quoting myself

I heard back from the "other" coach, Justin, who was RD for Moab and the Colorado ultra that I ran. He says he'd love to help. He sent me a link to his coaching background and pricing. The background I'd read when I thought about contacting him a few weeks ago. The prices are more than fair. I just need to make sure he understands that the TOTM is a bike event.  I don't see much (any) multi sport on his page.

I just did a quick look at his page and it seems he is focused entirely on running, so definitely quiz him on the bike stuff!

Good plan!

I sent an email to the RD from my last ultra, who is also a coach. We'll see if that goes anywhere.

Yeah, that's why I talked to Coach Scott first. OTOH, the ultra is my priority and that is where Justin knows his stuff. I just need to also be able to ride a metric century without Mary dropping me like a bad habit.

ETA to get the quoting right

I went back a few pages but couldn't see what happened with Coach Scott.  Is he for sure out of the picture?  Justin for sure would be a great coach/resource for your ultra running, but it would be nice to have some bike workout guidance.  OTOH, you could probably find some sort of online century training plan online and maybe Justin would have some sort of idea how to work that in with the running plan?

ETA: Mad Moose, I love the name!

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
