Subject: RE: The Biggest Loser
I think a 5k is great. For sure it inspires people. I guess I am thinking that the hand holding has to stop on this show and they have to make a big deal out of THAT. Running a 5k with a medic and Dr. Oz right there is bizarre. Finishing so slow should be depressing and motivating for these people. Hearing people say, "oh I could barely run a mile a month ago and look at me now," and having a bunch of people bowing down to them is wrong. Yes, look at you now, but the question is not what you did but what you are going to do and how if you are going to be a runner or a crossfitter or rope snapper or whatever you have not even really progressed. Last year didn't they have to run a 5k to get on the show?

I think it would make very good tv to take away these victories and replace them with some reality. Like you just finished the 5k in 38 minutes, hey, do you know this guy McMillian says it will take you 6 hours and 10 minutes to run a marathon, yeah, that is a pretty long time huh, you wanna run it a bit faster, then this is what you got to do. Or, oh, you just finished a 5k in 38 minutes, do you know what the world record is (in the 5000 meters which gets no TV time between NASCAR and Monday Night Football) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5000_metres12:37, ouch, ouch ouch ouch. Oh, and here is Ryan Hall, do you know how fast he ran the last 5000 meters of his marathon in, oh, and do you know he isn't even.that.fast. Oh, and here is what high school runners are doing at the Footlocker Invitational http://www.runnerspace.com/eprofile.php?do=info&event_id=14in cross country.

Are these people so fragile they could not even take a small dose of reality at this time?

I guess I have just grown tired of seeing the same journey that people go through season after season. They all talk about how, "this is not for just now, this is a change in life, a change in my attitude, a life long journey etc." But then they go on to make every little mini accomplishment an epic adventurous victory. The biggest leap I got in my training life was when I realized that it is a years long process, maybe decades long. I just wish it could be conveyed somehow on the show.

But come on...it's a process and a pretty universal one. It is a revelation to them that they can run a mile. And ya, anytime anyone tries to "change their life" there is a lot of talk and good intentions... then reality hits. But you have to start somewhere, and usually that is square one. for them, it's like square -10... and when they finally get to square one... ya, it's a big deal, and don't rain on their parade. They will need that accomplishment to get them to square 10.

jmk-brooklyn - 2013-01-24 11:49 AM I have to say that so far, I’m really happy with what seems to be a less competitive format. I really like that the trainers are working as a team, and it isn’t Jillian vs Dolvett vs Bob, trying to keep their teams intact for fear that they have to go home themselves when their team is eliminated. I LOVE that there’s no sequestered team discussion before the elimination. Not only does it prevent the politics and manipulation that gets out of hand sometimes, but it also keeps people from saying, “You know what, everyone, I want to go home—please vote for me.” I noticed that the contestants weren’t given the option of voting for themselves and I like that the votes were kept secret. I understand the need for drama and that the alliances and backstabbing makes for good tv, but I think that TBL should have a higher purpose and that it doesn’t serve that purpose when it turns into Survivor. I’m enjoying the season so far. Jillian is a beast. I love her. I’m terrified of her, but I love her.

If these contestants were smart they would be having the "who are we going to vote for" discussion BEFORE weigh ins start.

Also, if they were going to go to this new format I wish they wouldn't have sat there and still gone over every stupid vote...just have everyone vote in secret and announce the "loser"...no need to make everyone say why they voted how they voted....*sigh*

Debbie Downer much?

Their journey isn't the same as yours.  It doesn't make it wrong just different.  Along the way you probably celebrated your first half marathon completion, I know I did and it was a great experience.  Now it's just another down week for my long run.  And my future goal is ultras and other races.  But these contestants are starting out at a different place.

Lighten up Francis

I was ok with the 5K bit (would have liked to see Alison's time) but I thought the worst/misleading part was the cheerleaders with Dolvet and the middle age kid.  Face your fears, you can do anything, blah blah - ALL of that was because ripped black man and a giant camera crew were standing behind her. If she'd been alone she would have been torn to shreds. But all the "you can do it, we'll be your best friends, etc" - sorry, I knew cheerleaders in high school - they are not that nice.

Which brings me to the other issue. If you mock and ridicule someone, then that's bullying, which is bad - I get that. But at what point does it stop being ok to just accept kids getting bigger and fatter? Do you say that anyone, no matter how huge, can become a cheerleader or join the basketball team?

I listen to Jilllian's podcasts and after they announced she was re-joining the show, she talked about the fact that she hated the competition aspect of the show and refused to go back unless they were all able to train all of the contestants. She said in the past there were several of her contestants that she thought would have done better with Bob and vice versa but they weren't allowed to reach out across teams.

I *was* a cheerleader in HS and I wasn't mean. For the record.

Sure, you can, no matter how huge you are RIGHT NOW, you CAN shape yourself up and maybe become a cheerleader or join the basketball team.

Seems like some of you guys are a little bit "over" the biggest loser experience. That's certainly your option.

I, for one, enjoy watching morbidly obese people (literally) work their A$$es off and turn their lives around. Sometimes it sticks, and sometimes it doesn't... just like in the real world.

But, if people are inspired to get off the couch, do a little exercise, and start down their own path to fitness or an improved lifestyle... who are we to criticize it? We are on a TRIATHLON forum for God's sake.

These people were on the couch. Some of them were practically fused TO the couch. You can't motivate someone like that by showing them the 5K Olympic record. That's just not realistic.

Those people, by running 3 stupid miles, have already exceeded THEIR wildest expectations.

That little cheerleader girl, by cheering with that HS squad, has done something she never thought possible. She's seen how it feels and now she has a palpable goal. She also has about 30 lbs to lose, but she at least has a taste of what *could* be.

We shouldn't pee all over their parade. Let 'em enjoy the "journey".

powerman - 2013-01-23 11:33 AM So what is the deal with the 5K? Have they done early ones before like that? Seems much better to do a "progression" on the show than just throwing them all in a marathon later on. I'm not talking them physically doing a build up to a marathon. I'm talking of them doing a progression on the show to motivate viewers and to show them you can start small.

Agreed. I always cringe when they do the marathon at the end.  A marathon is a pretty extreme event even for someone who isn't in bad shape like these people are.  It seems like people that watch think they can do one easy since they aren't pushing 4 bills.  A marathon is pretty crazy and not to be taken lightly.  I'm more worried that the couch potato viewing tries to train for one and gets hurt or doesn't realize how much training goes into a marathon especially from zero fitness level.

I like the 5k idea.  Very manageable for someone off the couch in a reasonable amount of time.

I get upset when they do the marathon at the end, because most of them beat my time! Seriously.

But I am happy that they are out there doing it and rocking it.

BigDH - 2013-01-23 4:01 PM My take on the 5k, I could hardly stomach it. I mean I know what it is like to haul your fat self for a 5km run. The couch to 5k program is sick for a fatty. It hurts. So I get it hurts. But when I finally dragged my sorry self through that 5km I knew it was ONLY 5 KM. I knew it wasn't anything special. So getting all happy because you got 5k done and having a big standing O at the end. I mean good job. But you aren't 2 years old. You have been at this for a couple weeks. This should be par for the course and you are on to the next mini victory. That is why so few of these people keep it going when they get home.

I see where you are coming from but this show is produced to appeal to the masses. Unfortunately the masses are over weight and would like to lose weight. I could see how it could motivate someone to get off the couch and try a 5k. While it may not be a big deal to most of us, a 5k is a big deal for alot of people.

Part of the reason I got into triathlon in the first place was that I saw an overweight, unathletic kid on MTV’s “Made” train for and complete a sprint tri in 60 days. I was athletic but out of shape and had never done any kind of endurance sport or even run a 5k before, but I watched it and thought “If that kid can do it, surely I can do it.”
Hopefully, there’s someone out there who is overweight, but maybe not to the extent that the contestants are, who sees it and thinks, “If these people, who are 100+ lbs overweight, can do it after only a couple of weeks of exercise, maybe I can do one too..”

I remember that episode! I was watching it back in 2008... while on a 3 or 4 hour trainer ride while training for IMKY. I was going to cut it short, but after I watched that episode and how much that kid was whining, I told myself to suck it up and finish ALL the time I had scheduled.

Or at least I think that's the episode that inspired me that day. ???

I have to admit when they first said a 5k, I was like "that's all?" but then I remember these people are probably doing only intervals and running on the treadmill for 5 minutes at a time then it's to weights.  They don't seem to be running for 30 minutes or so straight.

On one of the seasons they started the show with a 1 mile run. It was so sad how many of the contestants couldn't hardly finish 1 mile. I think someone even passed out and had medics on him/her before finishing that mile. Watching that made me sad. It's amazing how out of shape a majority of people have become.

Shut up

Even when I watch it... ya they "completed" 26 miles... but you know it takes them like ALL day right?

And yet in all my "training" I have not found the motivation to run out and do a marathon even to cross it off the list... and yet it still bugs the crap out of me knowing TBLs have one under their belt. Laughing

The one I saw was probably in 2005 or 2006 (I did my first tri in '07). I remember that they did that particular "mission" a second time, so that was probably the one you saw. Either that or a re-run.

I came in to post about just that...crazy!

I don't agree with them only getting 15' to shop...they SHOULD have started that challenge back on the ranch with them actually making a list...because what you SHOULD do when you go shopping is NOT go hungry (right after a workout) and NOT go without a list.  Sheesh.  Budget and limited time in the store is FINE...but they should have given them prep time before the fact....

*sigh*

Lisa looked great in her post-BL interview!  Her face was so pretty!

I thought the 15' to shop was stupid too. That just isn't how it is in life. Heck, it takes me 15' to figure out what ice cream to get.

Yes, I get a time crunch, but I thought that was too little. I would never shop for the week with 15 minutes... I would find the time to get it done.

The wife and I were joking that they all did so well because they ran out of food by Wednesday.

And ya, Mom looked great. Big change compared to others at home.

I thought this episode was very "meh". So we can't break the broken guy in the gym, so lets stage this pointless Dr. visit and get him to cry.

White Team: without the 2lb advantage, she would have had to lost 6+lbs. Whoa. So she lost 9 (great!!), but how many weeks can she keep those numbers? I'm guessing not many.

And finally, Mom looked AWESOME. 176 (I think) they said she weighed? She's done great at home. Good for her, she seems really happy to be healthy for her family. That's what it's all about.

I thought TC did good too. When I first saw his photoshoot I didn't think he'd lost much, but then he said he lost 80lbs and I was shocked. Not bad for being kicked off in week 1.

Is anyone else kind of annoyed how they are showing the teams trainings? They make it seem like the white/red team are crushing and blue is whining and not doing their workouts, then blue comes out and destroys the red team.

There wa sno way that shopping trip took place right after the workout. The Mom-Lawyer ladies hair was completely different.

Lisa looked really good at home.

(I see you can't remember anyone's name, either. )

Yes, just what we needed--another visit from Dr. Skeeve.

man I feel sorry for that white chick.  Also, I don't know what was going on in the challenge, because she barely beat the red team, I can't imagine all of them were keeping up with her, someone probably lapped her.

too bad she lost so much weight, that is going to be tough for next week for her.  Although there was a lot of weight lost this week so who knows.

Woulda liked to see a bit more about what they bought and how that worked out, seemed like there was some division on that issue for some reason.  I think that stuff about eating healthy being more expensive is a bit of bull though.  Seems to me that per calorie eating unhealthy is less expensive but who really needs a supersized big mac meal right.  I don't know much about my budget but I figure, with eating out and alcohol, I am at more than $70 a week for sure.
