Master 6834 Englewood, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN Originally posted by abake How is everyone doing in this winter weather snap? It's -24 with the wind chill in Central Illinois today and it looks like we got a bit of snow. I had to ride in the woods yesterday evening (Part of my prep for this weekend's event) with a bit of a breeze. It was 58* when I started and 55* when I got done. Brutal cold, I know, but I got through it. The fun part of the ride was when I had a wild hog crossed the trail 1 foot away from my front wheel, oinking and squealing at me. While I don't wear a heart monitor, I'm sure it spiked a bit. |

We just came back from the dessert (Red Rocks and Death Valley... balming 70 degrees and perfect sun all day...), and it was a painful adjustment... |

1731 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN Originally posted by IronOx Originally posted by abake OK, here's my bio. Even though I wasn't too involved in the Manatee forum last year, I'm super stoked for 2018! NAME: Anne Baker OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: I'm on FB (Anne Bretscher Baker), Strava (Anne Baker - also in the Manatee STrava group), Slowtwitch (don't post much) STORY: I'm 56 years old. Adult onset athlete. I rode horses quite a bit as a teenager but then didn't do much of anything until I quit smoking in my early 40s and needed something to replace the addiction. Took up running and got really involved in the local running club scene. Had and continue to have issues with plantar f, so I have to be careful about too much running. Started riding bikes, learned to sort-of swim. Did my first sprint in 2008 and have done a number of tris since then, including IM Florida in 2015. FAMILY STATUS: Have one daughter, age 28 (wow, how time flies). Live with my sweetheart, Steve. We'll tie the knot one of these days but after 14 years, no particular rush. Have three very cool cats and a freshwater aquarium full of small fish and shrimp. CURRENT TRAINING: I'm heavily into gravel racing now, which sort of edged out triathlon. I'm in the lottery for Dirty Kanza. I have a coach on Training Peaks who keeps me accountable. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: March - Dirty South Gravel Grinder 100km, Alto Pass, il (weather permitting); April - Louisville Half Marathon with Laura Baron and Robin Proctor); May - Tour of Hermann, 2 day gravel ride, Hermann, MO; June - Dirty Kanza 200 mile (if I get in the lottery). Plan B would be either Coast to Coast in Huron, Michigan, or Badlands Gravel Grinder somewhere in North Dakota. October - Cuban Gravel Crisis 100 mile, Cuba, Missouri. Some other events depending on vacation time and finances GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: I love the energy of this group and hope to be more active in the forum this year. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: There's a lot of collective wisdom here. I've been on BT since 2008 and the Manatees have been around for a long time, and that sort of stability is very appealing. Welcome back Laura and Anne. ***Hey guys, we got 'em fooled. They think we are stable.... lol |

108 Jacksonville, Florida | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN I'd like to join the group. Tried to post my bio earlier this morning but must've goofed it up. Take two: NAME: Karl Hanson OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Instagram kbhanson3 (don't post much) STORY: After growing up playing sports (basketball through my freshman year of college & summer league swimming), I became an occasional elliptical machine exerciser as the kids were growing up and I was trying to keep up in the career rat race. In 2011, my weight hit an all time high which prompted my wife to give me a swift kick in the backside. I committed to a plan to lose 40 lbs and get into shape. In 2012, I did my first sprint triathlon and did a few more sprints and an olympic distance and was doing pretty well keeping up with training. In Summer 2016, I cracked some ribs MTB and got completely off track. In September 2017, I recommitted to training with an eye towards some events in 2018. FAMILY STATUS: Married for 21 years. 2 kids - 18 yr old girl & 15 yr old boy. 1 lazy 7 year old dog. CURRENT TRAINING: The run is by far the hardest discipline for me. I've been doing Jeff Galloway's 10k run-walk program to build endurance. I've been doing a Tru Tri Sports swim training program 3 days/wk. Swimming is the easiest discipline for me so I've been doing the half-iron training. I also have occasional lower back spasm flare ups so the swimming helps with that. I've been mixing spin classes & road rides 2-3 days/wk. I'm now trying to figure out how to incorporate strength/core training into my routine. THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: River Run 15k (Jacksonville - Mar 10). St. Anthony's Tri Olympic distance (St. Petersburg - Apr 29). Shooting for a half-iron aquabike in the Fall. GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Complete all of my events in 2018 feeling strong. WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: At 6'5" 265 lbs. I am often confused for a manatee during the swim. I'd like to pIck up some tips from the more experienced group members and contribute however I can. Edited by kbhanson3 2018-01-04 1:14 PM |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN Welcome all new and returning manatees, looks like we have a great group going! *whine alert* I am sick, AGAIN. I've dubbed it the Southside Plague, as in the south side of the building I work in. I've worked here 10 years and have been situated on the north side for 9.5 of those years, rarely getting sick over winter. Now (against my desire) I've been relocated to the south side and I've been subjected to 3 colds/illnesses since Sept. alone. My last illness was only late Nov, early Dec. The people in the cubicles around me just keep passing around the same illness, I believe, moving from one person to another to another, then eventually back to patient zero (no, I'm not patient zero). It's not cool. </whine> |

Adoption should become official tomorrow (got them from humane society in PA and their rule is that technically you foster for 2 weeks before officially adopting). Mosley is on the top left and Sadie on the bottom right. That's Tobi, my cat in the bottom left. |

Master 8248 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition OPEN I think I may have missed "winter" here in Saigon..... It was in the 80's when we landed at midnight last night; forecast low for the day was 78. That being said, I did get some winter weather back with my folks in Idaho, but nothing as severe as the East Coast and Midwest had--teens at night (I think the coldest it got was single-digits, but only lasted a few hours), mostly 20's to low 30's during the day, about four inches of snow. Much as I whine about hating cold weather, I grew up in the Midwest (Ohio) and spent a term studying Chinese in the far northeast there (next to Siberia), so I don't actually mind running in the stuff that much. (Have run down to 25 below!) It was kind of a novelty to run on snow, until the footing started to get sloppy. Looking forward to exploring the extensive network of trails outside Boise/Eagle during the summer. |

We couldn't find a race my kids could attend, but my brother and his wife can make this one. It will be great to share the weekend with them, and it will give my wife someone to hang out with. Although she never has trouble finding friends. |
