that is fantastic. As they say, if it doesn't scare you, your goal isn't big enough. You will be so happy to do this.

I was like, wait, Micawber? THE Micawber? I've seen that name forever around here! And a very warm welcome to newer members, and I'm looking forward to getting to know the Manatees who arrived after my departure 2018ish, possibly 2017.

NAME: Yanti

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Yanti Ardie on FB

STORY: Me growed up in Indonesia. Regionally (SE Asia) competitive swimmer, was known to kick a ball around, got a U.S. national ranking in badminton in college, also made some money off my fists & feet from people around the world, got into marathon running off a bad breakup in 2004, decided I wanted to suck at 3 sports in 2005 . I am a waaaay overcredentialed coach. IF ANYONE WANTS TO PESTER ME TO FINISH MY LEVEL 2 AMERICAN SWIM COACHES ASSOCIATION CREDENTIAL, PLEASE DO. Totally procrastinating.

A bout of sepsis mid-2018 brought my life to a screeching halt as it went untreated; that, follow-on infections, and rheumatoid arthritis setting in have thrown every organ, system, and structure into some kind of disease or dysfunction. Nothing works correctly anymore! However, with tons of shoring up, surgeries, and more to follow it seems that things work correctly enough. It's uncertain if I'll ever do a tri again; if so it will likely be on a very modified bike and with a guide.

I bounce back and forth between Indonesia (where my elderly mother lives and I can get medical care) and Australia (where my husband lives and I can't get medical care).

FAMILY STATUS: NO IDEA how Janyne stays married with one dog all this time. They won't even issue dog marriage licenses where I'm at. I have a rescue pet human named Kingsley (we got married on the run part while doing Ironman Western Australia in 2014) and together we have 3 cats in Perth, 2 dogs & 3 cats in Bali, 1 dog & 2 cats in Jakarta (Bali and Jakarta are in Indonesia).

CURRENT TRAINING: Re-learned how to walk again after a C-spine reconstruction in August. Been walking on a treadmill, cycling on a stationary, and swimming tethered in my backyard pool. Tons of PT as well.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: I would love to be able to walk/complete a parkrun or 5K anytime this year, and do a swim event of any distance. Australia is essentially COVID-free so if the gubmint lets me back in, those might be doable.

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Manatees are my Cheers bar?

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: My role is Bad Manatee. Whatever I do or have done, DO NOT DO. I am easily outsmarted but no one can outstupid me.

It's STILL a novel! I really tried ... sigh.

Welcome back, Yanti! Matriarch of all Manateedom!

P.S. I believe that Joe may be interested in a swim plan, you know, in case you need to do one for your certification ;-)

Many thanks for the warm welcomes!

So nice to see you here too, Yanti. While we didn't have much direct interaction, your posts were always entertaining and/or informative. It's very sad to hear of your health issues but I can empathize as my wife also suffered from fairly severe rhuematoid arthritis. In fact, her work with a local arthritis society fund raising run was what got me started running in the first place. It sounds like you have a good approach though; stay strong!

Welcome to all the newbies, and welcome back Yanti. Your reputation precedes you and a lot of folks in here talk about you a lot even when you're not here, so it's good you came back to hear it. I am fairly new here so I didn't get the benefit of all your prior posts years ago, but based on your intro here, it sounds like you'll be a kick in the pants to have around, and I'm glad you came back.

Yanti has assured me that she is coming.  She thought that her intro should be shorter than a novel is all!

At least half of the inactive 2020 Manates are very event focused.  No events means no they lost interest in us :-(

The other half are a combination of people who have limited internet or use the phone only (we all know that the BT mobile app is less than stellar) and people who think that we are serious.  I mean, we kinda are serious but let's face it, Manatees are very social creatures!

Anyway, I expect that we'll have a few more returning Manatees and a few more new ones.  Hopefully, everyone feels welcome!

I just found out at lunch today that BT is being blocked at work, which made me laugh. I work from home, so I can use my own laptop on the same desk during lunch. And as far as being serious goes, I have work for that, I don't need it in my hobbies.

Welcome back Yanti, I hope that you are doing as well as can be hoped for.

Welcome Dwayne, you may not be alone in your goal to get into shape. This year's holiday weight gain had some help and now I must pay the piper!

Welcome back Jason. It looks like Alaska agrees with you, which is understandable, it is a beautiful place to visit. We may have to put together a bit of a weight loss thing for you, me and Dwayne.

Welcome back Marysia and good luck on your return to school. And congratulations on taking that step when your life is as full as it is!

Welcome back Curtis and good luck with the upcoming move.  Hopefully things are opening up a bit at a good time in the year for you.

Welcome back Lisa, I hope you are getting settled into your new place. How is the dog(s?) doing?

Welcome Lauren. I hope you find us to be helpful and kind. And don't be afraid to ask anything, please.

Welcome Joe, it looks like you are ready to jump in with both feet. There are a few folks in here with some quality swim backgrounds, so you should be in the right place.

Robin, I hope this retirement goes better than the last one. Or was it two?

Welcome back again Jen. It is really cool to know that you have been doing this stuff for nearly 2 decades!

Welcome back Jim. I believe we currently are at the highest count of law professionals the Manatees have ever counted. I'm not sure what that means for us, probably something about respectability and such

Welcome back Anne. Just a bit of info for you, we may be hitting a gravel ride on Saturday that will include the most alligators in one area and cold beer. I'm just throwing it out there.

Melanie, I am so happy you returned again. I have had such a good time between veggie pics and art work on IG and FB. Keep it up, please.

Karen, I can't believe the luck you had last year. This year has got to be better!

Ann-Marie, I like your goal of getting back into shape. I'm not sure that means weight loss for you, looks more like getting everything moving correctly again. I'm sure Dwayne, Jason and I will welcome you into the "Return to shape club"

Jen, I hope your June event happens. I kind of figure that is when things start to open back to reality, but that is based more on my hope than any science. Good Luck!

Janyne, thank you again for herding these cats and getting us going again. I for one can't tell you how much I appreciate you! Oh yeah, FB is like the mob. I don't think you are allowed to leave once you are on there.

That should be enough for now, off to take care of my house work.

A few years back, we had a member of the group named Jo (screen name JoGo). She challenged us all at the beginning of the year to something, which I think was mileage or activity time???? I believe she was building for a marathon, although at this point it has have morphed into weight loss, miles run, biking, swimming, etc. It really became a "pick your challenge" kind of thing and somewhere on the internet is a Google spreadsheet or two with a variety of options for the challenge. If there is enough interest, which sounds like there is, we'll put something together. I would be in for riding time this year, as I really need to have a firm, trackable goal. Probably either 3 or 4 rides a week or 5 or 6 hours or some such thing. I need to make it a solid thing.

Awesome!  I am looking forward to it!

The JoGo Challenge has been a friendly way to track our varying goals and a source of both encouragement and accountabilit/good-natured ribbing.  Last year, I did it to track yoga workouts and some other things.  I may add a "mobility" challenge for myself this year since it seems that I do great at getting my mobility workout done 3x a week but I'm supposed to be doing it at least 4x a week. I need to get over that hump.

now that 2021 is almost over, here I am late to the party.....

I see some new people - welcome Joe, Lauren and Dwayne.

And Jim I'm jealous of the new bike! CONGRATS.

And Janyne thanks for always circling back to make sure I don't get dropped (see what I did there? Like a group ride?)

NAME: Randee

OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA: Mostly facebook but I'm on all platforms - easy to find with a name like mine

STORY: I'm a CPA in CT which means my training takes a hit from February to April but I mostly keep up with it. I have no REAL athletic background but I've been doing this TRI thing for 7 years or so (couch to ironman in 4).

FAMILY STATUS: I live in central CT with my husband, 18 year old Cat and 11 year old Greyhound

CURRENT TRAINING: I destroyed my back pretty bad last March which knocked me out of running until recently. I guess it was ok timing considering all my races were cancelled anyway. I did a lot of hiking and mountain biking which I really enjoyed.

THIS YEAR'S RACES/EVENTS: Races this year - 70.3 as a relay in August (deferred from 2020), a 70.3 in NC in October which was a deferral from Des Moines last year but my BIG event is going to be as a porter - my friend is doing Sea 2 Summit which is a 1.5 mile swim, 90 mile self supported bike and the last leg is a hike up Tukerman's Ravine at Mount Washington. You get to bring a porter with you on the hike - so that's me!

GOALS/OBJECTIVES/DESIRES: Keep me motivated friends!

WHAT MAKES YOU A GOOD MANATEE: When I'm present I'm a pretty good cheerleader. And I always have an opinion to give (whether asked or not )

Thanks for the explanation Chris!
Seems like this is sort of a "bell the cat" situation. Many of us think it's a good idea; now we just need someone to Dooo Eeeet. And the job should be easier for us than the mouse's "bell the cat" project would be for them! Volunteers?

OK, so here is everyone's homework while you are out on your long ride this weekend. Wait, what's that? Only the Floridians are out on those right now. Ah well, whatever. Think it over and while that is going on, I'll see if I can come up with a simplified version of one of the challenge spreadsheets. Or Janyne probably has one already.  A simple Y/N sort of thing where you either hit your goal for the week or you didn't. The semantics are simple, however, we need to come up with a duration that is long enough, yet not too long. I am going to suggest 6 or so weeks give or take. I base that on the widely used method known as "pull a number out of your ear". This puts us near the end on February or so. I am open to suggestions.

Welcome back Randee!

I could use a JoGo challenge. Having the kids here, Michelle made regular meals, every night. Couple that with holiday sweets and there is way too much Jim to go around. It is time to regain structure and stop eating so much. Which means I need to break out the "Don't Eat Like a Pig" diet.

I like the format we had in the past - the spreadsheet. probably because it makes me admire Excel skills of those who created all the formulas
As for the categories, I remember in the past we had:
1. loosing weight - tracking weight loss
2. healthy eating - each person would define their healthy eating goal (for example: reducing coffee, sugar, sweets, etc... eating breakfast, increasing veggies, fruits, drink more water), and then mark days when the goal was achieved
3. days with activities - marking when a person had at least 5 active days per week
4. miles biked/run/swam - tracking the number of miles for each week, with a goal set for each person individually
5. core days - marking when the person had at least 3 core days during a week

I am probably missing something.... any other suggestions or things you'd like to add?
