Ok Manatees a nutrition question for you. What do you all use when you do HMs and Marathons?

I have started to think about this for my Marathon in August and Mum, K and E are starting to ask me about it too. Some people I have spoken to here said that they just use jelly beans or snake lollies or things like that because they are easy to get and do the same job as gels. What are your thoughts on thus?

K got to the 10k mark of the 12 that we did a couple of weeks ago and she said she was pretty much done - this was at about 1:30 (I think her pacing might have been an issue because we had done 10k a couple of weeks before and she was alright). K is a big girl but she doesn't eat a lot and I am thinking that maybe she needs to have small amounts starting at around the 45 minute mark.

We are doing a 10k race this weekend which is pretty much unsupported so it's a good opportunity to try something.

I know this is an individual thing and we all just need to experiment for ourselves and work it out but I need to help them with this and I don't feel like I have the knowledge to do that.

I don't use anything until I get to the marathon distance ( which I haven't done in a few years!) and then I used starbursts or mini tootsie rolls.  Gu and I just don't get along!  Here is a link to the Runner's World beginners blog that deals with  nutrition  . My friend writes the blog, so I'm a little biased, but I think you'll find some good tips.  THe link is just for one topic, but if you google runner's world beginners blog, you will find a TON of topics.  K may find them helpful.

to everyone that was stalking me in the non-creepy way during IMTX.  What a DOOZY of a race & massive congrats to Sean for absolutely CRUSHING it out there!

I almost got DQ'd the day before the race due to my own stupidity, lost my way during the swim in the fog & milky tea-colored water (and was told later by 5 different people I know, the swim was long by about a quarter of a mile), I was thoroughly enjoying myself on the bike until my back seized up around mile 60, and all you could do was laugh during the "run" (I couldn't run because of my stoopid knee).

I had the BEST time I've ever had during a race.  I chatted with everyone, thanked as many volunteers, police officers & cheering people along the road.  I hugged the first aid station person that had chicken broth during the run & I can tell you with absolute certainty that running whilst the weather is doing some crazy-a$$ sh*t (like torrential downpour of rain, hail, tornado-like winds, lightning & then more rain) is even crazier than it sounds.  But still... what else can you do but laugh at how completely ridiculous it was.  Jumping through the puddles & dancing all the way to the finish line - it was an EPIC day for a race!

Oh... and I've now signed up for IM Cozumel in November...

Great to see you Monica and so glad that you had such a great time at IMTX despite the weather.

Hi Monica! Glad you're not dead That race sounds umm interesting!

Calling for your help.

I'm at the stage of writing out an interactive route card on a speadsheet.

I have 31 map routes left to do (I've done 1 and part way through another.) but am finding it very time consuming and am quickly running out of time with all the other things I need to do.

If any of you could spare a little bit of time to help I would be very grateful.

The spread sheet/route card can be found here: Route Card. Instructions on what to do can be found on the spread sheet and also here Instructions.

I have filled out Map AB2 as an example already and am starting to fill out map AB3. Ignore AB1 for the time being as the route needs altering.

If you can find some time, reply on this post by quoting this post and declare which map/route you are going to do. the routes are about 50 to 100 miles each.

Any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks.

Checking with the Mr to see what kind of day he's having. Standy by! #unemploymentsilverlining

This made me laugh. Thanks all. I've done AB2, AB3,AB4 and AB5.I'll do AB6 and AB7. Have to go to work now, for your reference, it's taking me about 40 minutes per map.

I'll start with BC2

Not sure how to do the distance between places using GPSies.

Hopefully it'll become clear when you follow through from the instructions. Basically you're loading a route in to Gpsies, then you're editing the route. Make a note of the total distance and elevation given on Gpsies of the route you uploaded. Select the town/city you are going to log. Work back from that town deleting the track point (blue dots) from the track back to the beginning of the track until you reach the green dot (the beginning). Then move the green dot all the way to the new town. Refresh climbing and note the new total distance and total climbing figures. Subtract these figures from the original figures you noted earlier. Enter these figures into the spread sheet. Repeat to the next significant town with these new figures until you get to the edge of the route. Hope this makes sense :/ It would be a lot easier to show it.

Where do you see total climbing? I see Elevation but that seems to change even as I zoom in and out (without changing any points).

Ah, that's the elevation figure for where your cursor is. If you scroll down the page there is total ascending and descending figures along with a bock that says refresh ?elevation? Or something like that. Cheers for trying.

Edit to the Instructions: Can you make sure the track is made Public, and not "not Public" as I previously asked? Janyne, can you edit your track BC2 to be made public so that I can access it on Gpsies. It won't let me upload that route now because you have, Doh. I need to have a squint at that elevation data. I think you have inputted elevation data for a single point, ie 696 feet. I have a feeling, judging by the area, that it should be close to 2000 ft. Thanks.

I emailed you a screen shot of what I am seeing.

I completed BC2 and BC3.

Protip: Do not use full screen.

I'll start with BC4

Ha!  Interesting, indeed...

If anyone wants a little glimpse into some of the run conditions for the day, this clip (not of me, one that was sent to me) doesn't show the lightning or the hail, but you can see a bit of the wind and the rain.  T'was fun!

I have to take calories in a HM because my body crashes if I don't. I'm not a fan of candy so I don't do the jelly beans or blocks. I will take in one GU or a HUMA (way better than GU!) between 1:20 and 1:30 and that will get me through the race.

Funny story (well, now it's funny because then it wasn't)- Sunday I had a 2 hour track workout. 16x800 plus my warm-up and cool down. For some reason I didn't think to take a GU or a HUMA. I was thinking that I wouldn't need it for a track workout. Why I had that thought, I have no clue. I finished the last 800 and almost passed out. As in everything was spinning and there was a darkness overcoming my eyes. I grabbed my Skratch and drank that and ate a HUMA while I fought off the spinning.

I got the following message trying to upload BC5. Thoughts?

  • The track was already uploaded and saved as Puy de Deome to Grindelwald 1081-1184 km. For copyright reasons and to prevent double tracks, the upload of the same file is not allowed. The ID of existing track is: mgpxzaeihxwbfprl. If you have the copyright, then please contact us.

I completed BC2 and BC3.

I'll start with BC4

Cheers my dears.

BC4 done. It goes fast once you get the hang of it.  I'll look at another tomorrow.

I got the following message trying to upload BC5. Thoughts?

Try renaming it with a BC5 in front of it.

I find one gel is good for the HM distance for me - and exactly as you were thinking it's good to start it around the 45 minute mark. I don't suck down the whole thing at once. I just can't do that. I take some hits of it with water until it's done. I have done blocks and jelly beans but i seem to prefer the liquid on the run over chewing and the solids are hard on my sensitive teeth. I experimented with a few gels types and flavours until i found one I liked.

Thanks.

Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Part deux
I honestly don't remember eating anything in any of the dozen or so marathons I've run in my life....I haven't done one in maybe a decade--maybe that was before gu was invented. I think I survived by drinking Gatorade and de-fizzed Coke when it was on offer.

These days, I usually take a gu or two for a half-marathon. Generally I carr y two, but just have one, at about 50 minutes. (Most of my stand-alone HM in the last five years have been in the 1:33-1:36 range, so that's a little past halfway.) I always use PowerBar Tangerine gu, since it also has caffeine and a lot of sodium. The only HM I've run in this time (except for HIM run legs) has been at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, and only water is served on course, so I'm using gu as an electrolyte source. During the run portion of a HIM, I take two of the same gu, one at about 7 km and the other at 14 km. I usually carry an extra in case of bonking or cramps, but it's never happened.

Not a big fan of gu. I prefer solid nutrition (energy bars or dark chocolate) on the bike, but have never mastered the art of chewing on the run. I have a pretty amazing gag reflex. Sweet sports drinks also make me nauseous for some reason, so I'm kind of stuck with thin-textured gu. I'll admit to being super picky--there are really only two flavors that I have been able to get down when running at race intensity--Powerbar Tangerine and Hammer Apple Cinnamon. I make sure to bring over a good stash of those as they are not sold here. I never "live off the course" anymore except for sprints. Have tried with pretty disastrous results (as in 4+ hour races unable to get/keep anything down).

I suppose if you can get and keep them down and don't need the electrolytes or caffeine, there is nothing wrong with substituting non-sports oriented products like jelly beans, gummy bears, etc. in a long race. Plenty of athletes in Asia use Haribo (Japanese gummy products) for "nutrition" in longer events. In the end, it's all just quick energy from simple carbs.

I will typically have nutrition for a half marathon.  For an HM I have a Gu at about the halfway mark.  For a full marathon, I go with every give miles because I find it easier to keep track of miles than minutes.  I try to take the Gu just before a water station so that I can wash it down.  The package says every 45 minutes.  The main things are (1) do not get behind on your nutrition and (2) practice.  When in doubt, start with what they are offering on course.  That way, if you drop your nutrition or forget it or something weird happens (weird stuff happens, see also, Monica IMTX), you have a backup.  I have stuck with Gu-type products because I can't chew something and swallow and run at the same time. I think that I'd choke myself trying to run and eat a jelly bean at the same time!  Clearly others are more talented than moi!

Any Manatees use the vivoactive for swimming? I have been for the last 4-5 months and it has been very accurate, but today it shorted a couple of 200 yd sets by 25 yrds.  Everything else was right on the money.  I know that I didn't miscount -which is always my first thought, b/c I would have ended up at the other end of the pool.  Just wondering why this happened and if anyone else has experienced it - whether with the vivoactive or another watch.  I have enough trouble keeping track of my distance without my watch confusing me

I've never had my Garmin Swim skip laps.  Sometimes it's "generous" and adds extras -- because I'm just that good a swimmer (ha!  actually, I must have a stutter in my stroke when I attempt to go "fast.").

If you care enough, you can go to http://www.swimmingwatchtools.com/ and "fix" it.

You may be on to something - I was probably swimming so slowly I put my watch to sleep and it missed the laps!!

How do you know about these tool things?!  I don't think I care enough about 50 yards to try to figure out how to fix it, but if it gets worse I might!  Thanks!!

WOW you do go to the most amazing places! but weren't you there for work? If is I need some lessons about how to get work to send me places like that. I was. I went to Hong Kong and Bangkok for work then I tacked on a few vacation days in Thailand before my return then the rest was savvy travel planning, early morning and late nights before and after work.

Hi Monica, you bad azz Betty!!  What a day you had, wow.  Your bolded part says it all, though.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Coming off of a tibial stress fracture in 2000, stevebradley made his way into triathlon. Now he has over 60 triathlons completed and is one of the most active mentor groups on BT.

Not only is he a great athlete, he is a great mentor. I have been in his mentor group for the last two rounds and he inspires and encourages our entire group daily.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
