I had a really hard tempo last night. Note the use of the word hard and not fast. Man, I am exhausted this week. I am going to be soooo ready for taper.

My coach is really pushing for me to run with my teammate on Saturday. We have very similar PRs in almost all of the distances but she is (in my eyes) a much 'faster' runner and really kills the track, while I see myself as more of a strength runner.

She is running this 10K more like and 'A' and I am running it more as a workout. Regardless, our coach seems to really be pushing for it. He even sent me this long article on the advantages of running in a pack (hint, hint.)

I am a little nervous about it. I TOTALLY buy into the benefits (mental and physical) of working together. What I am concerned about is going out at the projected pace and finding (due to all the cumulative training stress from marathon training) is just too fast, dropping off and then being discouraged by the gap. I just know I do best when I force myself to be conservative at the beginning of a race and finish strong vs going out a little faster and having the guts to hold it. Maybe this is an opportunity to work on my guts-factor? I'm just not sure.

What do you guys think? All feedback is welcome.

Adrienne
You need to decide what you want to do with this race. I'm not sure your coach has your best interests at heart, IMO.

In an ideal situation, you will do all of the following:
1)run sub39:50 and qualify for Nats (sub6:25pace)
2)feel 'good' about the race and how you ran it-however that may be, and at sub40, it will be a PR, so that will help, right?
3)recover fast enough to get back on track with the final bits of the M training block for your 'A' race without getting injured or overly fatigued

It seems that your coach wants your teammate to have someone to work together and that always helps mentally. Hopefully, the pace will be amenable to that. But it may not be...I can appreciate Jim's suggestion to suck it up and try to hold even pace and that's a good suggestion, in general. Running in the pack, and definitely not in front, will help you save a lot of energy. But your goals for this race do not coincide with hers.

If the pace begins around 1:37-1:40/lap, that is slow and you will know that the pace will have to pick up a lot in the second half for you to get to sub40. It will be important to turn the screws at the right time to achieve your time goal, so you'd better have a plan for what your goal pace is going to be and what you will do if the pace is too fast for you (very possible) or way too slow (unlikely). I'd try to stay relaxed and let the first mile come to you. Try to keep tucked in and see what the pace is and how you are feeling.

I'd suggest trying to be right on pace at 1:36

If the first lap is 1:35 and they stay that way for several laps but you don't feel too taxed within the group, try to hold on and keep that pace. Even pacing of these laps will bring a 39:15, which is 35 seconds under your goal, so you have some room to back off it is uncomfortable. Try not to fall off the back of the pack. I suspect that the group will likely split into minigroups and you'll have to find your pace. Try not to be in the front of any group, stay tucked in, if you can.

I'd be very careful about going faster than 1:33/lap. This is ~38:30ish and it will take a toll on you, so back off, if able.
Do not run your teammate's race. Do not be a pace bunny for her. Do not get sucked into it.
Go out, have fun, get some experience on the track and lay down ~39:3x time.

You can do it.
You have the training to support the speed of a vdot 54 (an 18:30 5k) and strength of a vdot 54 (a 1:25:29 hm). You can actually run sub 39 on a taper. But since you are not tapered, don't kill yourself.

I don't think your coach will be unhappy with you as long as you achieve your goal of qualifying, so make that the priority.

Jason - dude, what can I say.  Looks like a better route than Arend's street.    I can't wait to go to HI and check it out - that looks awesome!

Arend - hey, looks like a nice road to ride on… a few months of the year.  You think winter is ever going to end?!?  We ended up with just the wind - the snow line was about 15 miles east (and they got hammered).  I hope it melts quickly!

Thanks all for the comments on the hammy.  I really was trying to go back slowly, as Tuesday was the first day with intensity since the race (about 9 days), but I probably put too much overall stress (just from distance) on my legs right after.  Pretty clear, actually, as I was beat on Saturday and even took Sunday and Monday off.  Also, I looked at my paces and while the intervals were in Z3 overall, the ends of the intervals snuck into Z4.

Good news is that the trainer didn't hurt yesterday (almost felt better after).  Might try an EASY jog today - no intervals!  Trying to figure if I can go easy and keep at least some running in, or if I will need to shut it down for a week or so.  Hoping for the former, but will do the latter (better to lose a week now than a season).

Thanks again!

Matt

I echo what Matt said:
Fabulous TT swim times, Ryan. Many would be jealous.

Ben and Jason are putting up some killer numbers on the bike. WOW...epic? yep!

Arend might be snowed in until June...hopefully some warm weather melts it quickly
good to see Fred getting in some training

glad you are healing up Matt,
be careful with the hamstring-it barks when
not taken care of

Chris, a foced illness taper has not hampered a good number of athlete's previously, so I'm
hoping that you are able to enjoy your upcoming race and make it to the
starting line ready to go

hi nicole! when is your race?

nice 'kid pacing' Rusty
welcome Jerry

I am just getting back from another 20miler outside on the bike. Super windy and chilly but no snow on the road
(sorry, Arend, not bragging, just sayin'). Second PM battery seems to work.

Now, about these low power numbers...

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

I think I really need to nail down my goal for the race and just stick to that. It's really easy for me to get caught up with different aspects, ESPECIALLY because this is all so new to me.

It really has nothing to do with my coach. I don't even think he has an expectation of me. I think he just saw it as two similar paced runners who could potentially work together. Regardless, I talked to him a bit ago expressed my concerns and he just told me to race my own race and have fun with it.

I just want to run well and feel good about it. And that doesn't have much to do with placing or even a PR but I think getting the Nats qual would be a good metric. I just have to be careful not to beat myself up if I don't because I have bigger fish to fry.

Thanks for listening to my cupcaking

First time under 1:10 for 100.

So, for a swim TT, how much rest do you give yourself in between to assure it's an accurate TT? Or do you just look at those times in the context of doing them back to back.

And great job!

I would take a minute or two after each TT, do a 200 EZ pull w/ buoy, then take another 2 minutes before giving the next TT a go.  The only one that was difficult to recover from was the 400.  I really went after that one because I did so poorly on it last time.  I took 19 seconds off that one from last time.  The 200 and below were not too difficult to recover from really.

So did you end up inside or out?

Wow Arend.  That is brutal.  Painfully I can relate, it has been a crazy winter but we can actually see the grass now.

What's grass?  LOL.  We did finally get our road and driveway cleared late yesterday and I was able to get a 3000m swim in this morning.  Supposed to run today as well but it might be tricky to find somewhere safe to do so.

This is what the plow looked like when it finally tried to clear our road.

Wow!  I'm a northerner (MA is as far south as I ever thought I'd live - although this winter is making me reconsider that!), but that is NUTZ!

Unbelievable that you've been able to train as well as you have this winter - good on ya'!

That is Crazy! I feel for you. Snow like that is going to be May before it melts.

Thought CT was bad, but I got 35 in this AM around 5AM. It was dark and pretty cold, but bearable. My toes always get cold. Ever since my vacation in Florida I have been having a hard time mentally preparing for a trainer ride so have been heading outside whenever possible. I do notice it is harder to hit my specific zones. I seem to always default to tempo type riding with little spikes on the rollers. Not executing anything structured but still trying to keep it somewhat 'honest'.

I've seen Jason's rides on Strava. I don't like him but Arend makes me feel a little better.

From what I've been seeing out of Arend, maybe it is better he's on the trainer. Turning into a beast on the bike in just a handful of hours a week. Like clockwork smashing out those intervals.

Not to rub it in or anything, but it felt like summer on my run this morning and I was so, so excited (though I'm almost certain most everyone else here would rather deal with Arend's winter) -- hot, humid, muggy

Five weeks and one day out from SG 70.3!  I'm mostly excited, a little bit nervous, and still feeling a little under prepared for the run, but at least I've a) been running, and b) kept myself healthy for the most part.  I'm hoping that a taper and smart bike pacing will get me through the run (running!).

To listen to my Cx friends, that's what every race course looks like (but they also have mud, of course).

Serious side question - do any of you ride CycloCross in the fall?  A bunch of folks here transition to it after a late summer tri.  Just wondering if it's as popular elsewhere with the tri-set.

im in your neck of the woods from late August to December, i do most if not all of the larger races in the Northeast.

Cyclocross is my passion and love, all this other stuff is just to stay in shape, lol

Got a run in yesterday.  Amazing how you can tell your body is still recovering just by reference to heart rate.   A good 10 bpm higher than what it should be for that effort.

Surprisingly, the evening trainer ride was like I hadn't been off the bike for 9 days, and did not feel all that challenging.    3 x 5' at 305 2' at 205; 2 x 5' at 310, 2 at 205.  Of course, I have not swum in nearly two weeks.....Staying out of the water entirely until chest is totally clear

Rudy ever hear of the Iron Cross CX race?  It’s held in my back yard and has been on my bucket list for a while.  They have a 50k and 100k race and it is hailed as the states toughest CX race.
