So conditions should be perfect for BWR this weekend! On a more serious note, stay safe. I hope that your back is improving. I hope to see you when I am up there for a week in mid October, if not sooner. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! I know that Janyne is aware that IM changed the 70.3 Worlds in Utah to 1 day from 2, making the women race on Saturday rather than Friday. You can read about it here. I don't think any Manatee is affected (Karen?), but what a cluster for the women. I've read posts that indicate most women were planning on flying out Saturday, so now they have to scramble to find a new flight and incur whatever expense goes with that. Then there are the expenses of being in town another day -hotel, food, dog sitting at home, work... I am completely sympathetic to COVID concerns -heck I didn't do Choo 70.3 this year b/c of it, but this is unacceptable. How about canceling the race or moving the men's race up a day? And you get no refund if you qualified after a certain date, so if this new timeline doesn't work for you -too bad. IM puts on a good race (though the individual RD are probably who should be given the kudos), but it really fails with the way it treats the customer -especially its women customers. I will probably participate in CHoo next year (fingers crossed no covid by then!), but I really would like to never give them my money again! |

It's ridiculous to make this change so close to the race date on the backs of the female competitors. Definitely a clear case for some that if it doesn't impact them then there's no reason for concern. Sucks big time. |

Master 4119 Toronto | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! Good morning Manatees! I am in the last week before my long-awaited HIM! I having all the race nerves, self-talk, prep, etc. But i was pondering the run and wondering if you have experience with this. It is a TMI but bear with me. For this training cycle i always need a bathroom break, particularly for #2 and while I can accept this (I've cut coffee on run mornings, etc) I had a lightbulb moment that some people take Imodium (or similar) pre-race. Do any of you do this? How well does it work? anything to know? Timing? Is this something worth doing? You thoughts are much appreciated! |

I don't have that issue, so don't take anything, but a friend of mine does. I think she takes it at least 1 hour before the race. She does HMs not HIMs, so you may be able to get away with taking it on the bike; but I'll let someone else chime in if they've done that! One thing to consider is whether you want to try something new on race day. Can you try it for one of your taper runs? Of course, that could cause the opposite problem the rest of the week! Whatever you choose - good luck this weekend and have fun! ETA: I found this old thread on ST on the topic. Might be helpful. Edited by amd723 2021-08-19 8:37 AM |

I have had the need for #2 breaks on long runs during training. Fortunately, this issue has not followed in races. I think that my GI system has just slowed down so much after the swim+bike that it's kinda lost interest in bothering me on the run? Before my first full, I was advised to prepare a snack sized zip lock bag with travel packs of Tylenol and Imodium/pepto and always wipes to go or similar. (safe to use on hands, face, and more sensitive areas) (I have since found that Pepto does not help my tummy in the latter part of an IM run. YMMV.) Id say nothing new on race day but I did try the Pepto for the first time at IM Lou |

We have a very good friend who lives in Hurricane, UT. He said he wouldn't come to the St. George area right now if someone paid him a million dollars. Locals are either pretending nothing is wrong or are doing like he is, staying at home and going nowhere. He's had 3 neighbors die in the past few weeks from COVID and other neighbors still pretend it's not a thing. The entire event needs to be canceled. |

One of my friends uses Imodium and takes it right before the swim every race. I would try it during your next long run and see how it makes you feel. Also, there is no same in stopping during the race to use the port-a-litter-box. Heck, I always stop at the second aid station on the bike because I have to pee. |

A guy in my office qualified at IM Texas 70.3 and is doing the race. I guess he isn't affected but I am happy that I haven't had to deal with any race drama like this. Hmm??? I do wish I had a big race that I could say I was training for right now though. Hopefully, I will find one for September or October. Lots of local races have post "Race Dates Comming Soon" on their website for the past 4 months. I am losing hope that they are going to happen this year though. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees Dooo Eeeet!!! No, I'm not headed to Worlds this year. I was 10th in AG at Oregon 70.3 (out of 70+, not awesome, but not terrible); didn't bother to stay for the rolldown--I'm sure there was someone ahead of me who wanted the slot. I'd agreed beforehand with my mom that even if I qualified, I wouldn't take a Worlds slot. Oregon 70.3 was scary enough--beyond some giveaways of cloth masks with the IM logo and a few token bottles of hand sanitizer, NO Covid precautions were being taken; we were told to discard masks (only about 5-10% had them on anyway) in a bin because we would "be in the water shortly" and then made to wait around for up to 2 hours for the swim start in very crowded conditions (along a bike path). Cases locally have risen about 10X since then. I don't plan on traveling to race anytime in the foreseeable future. Even if the event itself was well-run, there are just too many variables with restaurants, hotels, lines, crazy people having tantrums on planes, etc. To be honest, I also don't feel safe sometimes when wearing a mask. Both Mom and I have been harassed in rural areas for that. People's reactions can be just as scary and dangerous as a virus at times. I believe it about Utah. It isn't a whole lot better in most places here. Oregon's governor reinstated the mask mandate last week and locally, people are following it really well. That varies depending on the community though. But there have been no restrictions re-imposed on anything and people by and large are going about things normally, which astounds me when you look at other countries (I have friends in Vietnam who haven't been able to leave their apartments for 6 weeks now, except for 2X a week and only to buy food, with no end in sight) and the fact that our case numbers are about 10X higher than when the restrictions were imposed. It seems like from now on all decisions are going to be based on politics rather than public health. Yikes. Just don't know where it's all headed. I can't see a workable solution to this that fits our culture and social system. Unrelated but RE the GI issues--I haven't had this issue in recent years (the last race was nausea, probably related to hormones, dehydration, or heat, not GI stuff). What helped was testing and then eliminating ANYTHING that might cause trouble. There are a lot of things I can tolerate just fine normally but NOT before a race or hard run. I can test them by trying them before a hard, hot morning run workout. That would simulate the level of fatigue and "shutdown" I might have in a race. Pre-race, I won't touch dairy products, eggs, wheat, chocolate, or meat, and try to keep my pre-race meal pretty light. Have never tried Immodium before a race. Have occasionally taken it before training when living in Vietnam (where there are few public toilets one could resort to on a run). My thought is it would be uncomfortable--it slows down or stops the digestive process, so if something isn't agreeing with you, it's just sloshing around in there. I think I'd prefer a porta-potty visit to that! Edited by Hot Runner 2021-08-19 11:11 AM |

Thanks for this - and i am definitely prepared to stop when i need to but if this might help i am willing to give it a try. I have done a number of tests but to no avail and now there is not enough time to do much more - avoiding coffee in the morning definitely helped so i do that. I chalk a good portion of my current situation up to my post-baby life. I had the second-worst sort of tearing after my son (who is now 4) and did some pelvic floor physio which has helped but the urgent, need to go really bad after about an hour on the run seems very consistent (I have been training since October) - this does not occur on the bike and i am not in general prone to GI distress in races. I tolerate most sport food, drink, etc - whether i like them or not is a different story! Edited by juniperjen 2021-08-19 12:10 PM |

It is directly tied to pre-race nerves and I get the same thing before a trial, if I believe I can win it. I do have a friend who has ulcerative colitis, (same as my wife had prior to her surgery) and he uses Imodium during races. UC carries a bunch of other issues too like dehydration and fueling, especially is it decides to flair. It has not hurt his ability to finish. Edited by JBacarella 2021-08-19 1:04 PM |
