Originally posted by TXTriRook For those of you who raced last weekend and for the other racers doing Buffalo Springs, what did you do/are your plans for the week before the race? With the temperatures in TX being in the mid 90's, are you still running/biking outdoors? I'm still working on figuring out what kind of taper works best for me, normally I like to be outside as much as possible to simulate as close to race conditions as possible, but this heat is making it tough!

Other than the actual tapering of load, specificity is my main goal when tapering from conditions to terrain and equipment. Of course you can only get so close, right? Example was pikes peak ascent. There is no way I could do a bunch of workouts simulating 14,000+ altitude in Seattle.

Well, my kids would have to do lung-buster sets swimming... Maybe try running without breathing?   (part of why I never quite got swimming - me like air!).

I completely agree with keeping specificity while tapering/ shedding load.  I drop volume considerably, if it's a full taper (and even over 2 weeks for an A HIM distance race), and keep short intervals at race pace/power/effort.  Typically something like 4-5x90" (4 run, 5 s/b) on Tuesday, 3-4 of same on Wednesday, 2-3 for Thursday, Friday rest, Saturday 2-3x60"-90" or at least enough to check equipment.  All have a long, easy warmup and gentle cool down.  The week prior will have longer, all race pace/power, intervals, but considerably shorter than build or peak weeks.  Three weeks out from a long course A race, I would do a peak week of considerably longer race pace intervals (but can't recall the length of each).

Will go back and look at my plans for more specifics if helpful, but that's what I recall as my general approach...

Also, I do a lot of the last week in race gear - even though I look super-dorky in an aero helmet and rolling a disc...  At least the last 2 workouts prior to the race, anyway.  Getting used to it and making sure it won't glitch right out of the gates gives me some peace of mind (and I always have to re-remember how to buckle my aero helmet chin strap!).

Matt

Yeah, saw a smoking deal (like ridiculous) on an unpainted Dimond frame on slowtwitch. Quickly figured out it was perfect for my fit. Bam! Of course now I've got to get it painted and build it up which I'm sure will cost more than the frame did. But I couldn't pass that up!!

And I'm definitely going to need manatee help on deciding how to paint this thing!!!

I love it! Isn't the Manatee rule that ORANGE and Black Goes faster?

One of my AG rivals in Singapore has a custom-painted pink Hello Kitty bike....(Yes, we're both in 45-49.)

How tempting to have a blank slate! Personally I would do something with purple, maybe with gold lightning bolts.

Thanks everyone, I'm super excited. My junker Fuji has served me well and I didn't want to get rid of it for a slight upgrade, but I didn't want to spend 10k on a bike either. For that reason I wasn't planning on getting a bike but I found myself looking at tweaking my current bike with different things but it never made sense to spend any money on it since it was a craigslist special. Then this thing just fell into my lap!

Ok, so I want it to match my team kit, therefore it'll be some combination of red/white/blue. This is the one I'm liking the best right now. Other options below the kit pic. I've numbered them for ease of discussion. (ignore the gray showing up on some of them, it's just a shadow in the 3d program, and they'll all have dimond on the top tube - didn't figure out i needed that till after a few were done)

Please feel free to add designs to the hopper if you want!!

Uhm, Im sorry but did you really just relinquish total creative license to the manatee collective?

If thats the case I am thinking a sea to sky fade background with cartoon manatees in a paisley like pattern.

I'd be inclined to have my helmet and glasses frame wrapped in the same design too.

I'm a simple man, so I'd go matte black or carbon fiber look. Red, white and blue touches on the wheels, hb tape, cables, pedals, etc. Maybe a name sticker or 2 from someone like http://www.velostickers.com/collections/products/products/classics. Those would be the only splashes of color for me. The benefit is that if you want to change color schemes at some point, it would be easier than repainting and less costly.

Didn't you recently get wheels? If so, is there any color on those?

BTW, that is a sweet looking ride!

Color selection is one thing I should not offer up suggestions for!

Going to be a really nice bike for you. I remember Rapp pointing out something not said so much in that the bike seemed really fast in the crosswinds too. Be curious what other components you end up putting on it.

Chris - I love that look too. But 90% of dimonds are black. Not very many custom paint jobs out there yet so I'd like something a little different. I don't want to go too crazy though.

I have a pair of HED jet 6 wheels that are all black with no stickers. So could add some color or white there if I ordered some stickers.

Ben, I've already ordered a tririg alpha x cockpit and omega x brakes. I will be going with a 1x chainring up front. Either di2 or etap for the RD. Etap blip box doesn't fit in the alpha x base bar like di2 junction box does so I'll have to figure out where to put the blip box if I go that route. Brake levers will depend on which RD I go with.

I really like this idea. Where you ride isn't so hilly that you would need a lot of low gearing, IIRC. I have been toying with the idea for my tribike.

Thanks for the feedback on the taper! Mary, it's the Buffalo Springs HIM, which I know a few other Manatee's are doing as well. I'm hoping we can coordinate a meetup! Matt and Adrienne, what you guys do definitely makes sense. Without ever working with a coach (or getting massages!!) and being still somewhat new to the sport I really need to work on fine tuning what warm up, race effort, etc means to me. I always have been more of a go out and swim/bike/run kinda guy and hope that I can go faster and with less effort than my last workout. Of course some high effort and recovery gets worked in but nothing as structured as where it probably should be.

Sean, congrats on the new bike!! Diamonds are kind of like the loch ness of bikes in my opinion. I've only seen one and it flew by me before I realized what it was! Blue/white with black wheels will look great IMO!

I was reading about Thai massage and was under the impression it was rather intense. Or maybe that's just the specific style of the place I was looking at? It mentions stretching and yoga but also trigger point. Hmmm.

Edited to add: I meant to reply on your comment about massage. Friday fail!

What did I miss? I'm sorry I was gone so long. Once school ended for me I got a little lazy with logging my exercise and posting on the forum. I'm trying to get back in the swing of things before school starts again. I'm glad to see the DL is empty and we still have plenty of racers. Darren, I'm really sorry about your father. Remember your memories with him, but don't let it hold you back.

Oh yeah, i should be more specific. I mean that I go to a Thai or Chinese facility. It's straight to business with none of the candles burning and enya music and costs 30 bucks. In terms of style, I specify closer to Swedish.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
