Hey guys.  First off, a little catching up...

Tobey - sorry to hear about you not being able to make your marathon.  I've had similar issues with 2 halfs that I planned and then was unable to do.  I hope you're able to find another one to take its place.

DJ - congrats on the swim!

Suzy - sorry to hear about your friend.  I hope his surgery goes well today.  And good luck on your test run.  I've got my fingers crossed for both you and Bob.

OK - my turn to rant about the weather.  I am so ready for winter to be done!  January is usually our coldest month but these temps are ridiculous!  Our highs are usually around mid-30's to near 40F with lows in the 20's which is cold but tolerable.  This week we'll be lucky to hit 20 as a high for tomorrow - and that's the warmest it will be until next week.  I've got a 5k on Saturday and the temp at race time (9 am) will probably be around 0-5F with windchills well below 0.  I'm seriously considering skipping it (especially since my daughter will be running it too and she has some sort of aversion to hats and glovesUndecided).  I just don't know if I can handle temps that low.  My first year doing this Frostbite Series and I might actually get frostbit!
OK, rant over Smile, I feel better - just needed to get that off my chest.

I feel pretty good today, but not 100%. Hopefully this is just my body adjusting to new levels of fitness.

I have two more runs this week. An LAT test on thursday and 15 miles in 2:15 on Sunday. I don't know how these will go if I do not feel close to 100%.

Glad to hear the bike is coming Suzy!

For what it is worth I use a swim counter on one finger. I hit it every lap and it logs the time for up to 100 laps.

Finally, I have to say a personal coach and plan is 10x better than a random on line plan!

Doug

Here is the part I don't understand--- Time AND Distance?  I thought the debate was always time VS. distance?  I usually hear of people saying I have to run 15 miles on Sunday (never time) or saying I have to run for 2:15 on Sunday (never distance).  Correct me here?!

Help!  So I got my computrainer (8002) over the weekend and there are lots of parts (mine also came with a race platform that my friend is letting me store at his house).  I'm setting it up tonight and wondering if I need to set it up exactly based on the instructions or is there a more simple way to set it up.  IE there are so many things that you need to strap to the bike and it recommends using their quick release, do you need to do all this?  What if you want to ride your bike out doors, do you take all the stuff off and then put it all back on?  Also those that have garmin cadence sensors on their bike, does the computrainer's cadence sensor throw off your stats?  Do you have both installed on your bike?

AMEN~  I miss my coach.  Just can't justify it only doing Sprints. I had one for three years so I figure I absorbed enough to know what I'm doing.   Actually, if my body would heal and I could actually run I'd consider it again just for the joy of driving one crazy.  I'm not a good athlete.  I ALWAYS do what I'm told, just not WHEN I'm told.   I love moving things around. It's a gift.

Suzy, I'm praying for you and your friend.  Hope all goes well on all fronts.

Kelly

I can't speak for others, but I don't have a single wire on my bike.... I don't use the cadence sensor, nor the HR monitor (that come's w/ computrainer), so I really only have the wires that go from the Trainer to the Interface, then the wire that comes from the computer to the interface.  I don't keep the interface latched to the bike (I find it grinds up your bartape).  I either throw it on the ground, Kim's aerobars, or you can build a cheap easy little stand out of PVC to mount it to (I have all the stuff to do this-just being lazy).

SSMinnow - 2010-01-05 7:41 AM Wanted to drop in for a quick hello.......

Forgot to tell you yesterday that my bike is coming.....apparently GURU didn't have a quality issue after all.  My bike fitter told me he thought it was an excuse because bike manufacturers never adhere to dates.  I think he was right.  Bad business people....Should have a ship date by the end of the week.

Bob is having surgery sometime this morning.

I 'm off to PT later this afternoon for my run test.  Sort of a nervous  The outcome willl determine my Spring racing season including whether or not Lonestar can stay on the plan.

In the meantime make sure you all post a lot so I am completely behind by the time I get back online....

Suzy

Bob will remain in my thoughts and prayers Suzy!

Good luck at the PT!!!

Happy 2010 everyone.  I made it safely to Kansas and back, just in time to get sick.  I finally dragged myself out of bed (first time in 48 hrs) and thought I'd check in on my BT family.  I am suppose to do my first  2 mile run tomorrow for the physical therapist - we'll see if that happens.   Tony, can you give me the cliff notes on the last 30 pages please?

I totally agree with that.
I am just finishing my first month up with my coach. I never had total 'structure' with my workouts until I got on with her. I posted something in my log that I am quite proud of when I compare with last year.
Last year, I was pushing hard to maintain 2:00/100m. That seemed to be where I was at. Yesterday after my main sets I did a fun 100m to see how fast I could do it. I swam it in 1:39. not that I could maintain that pace for any length of time, but last year there way no way I could do that. I have a 1000m time trial on my sched tomorrow, so we'll see how that goes.

nice improvement on the swim time Trevor.

Actually Steve, Marty has me run for time and gives me a range of distance I should be in, 15 miles is my  over-achieverness (is that a word?) showing up.

Andy: I did the BT olympic plan last season and I did not miss a single workout. My results stunk. It did not take my personal status, strenghs and weaknesses into account. Yes my swim improved. However, my run went down the toilet. A LOT! Also, a coach can change and tailor the program based on your individual progress and (injuries).

It has been less than 2 months and my running base has improved, he has shown me some things to work on in my swim stroke too. He helped me choose my race schedule. I chose to set the marathon in March as a goal to keep me working on my run through the winter as it has become my weakest area. He thought that would work well and has helped me implement the plan.

Also he runs with me once a week and I get advice on my form, and he answers my questions regarding why I am doing a particular drill.

As an aside, a few weeks back I was at Inside-Out Sports to get the discount on race entries, and they had over a dozen cervelo P4's all in a row. I took some pics with my phone and I am trying to figure out how to upload them. Anyway, Mike the manager said all but a really large frame one for someone at least 6'5" were claimed. I said that unless one was an elite triathlete I doubt they would see much difference. I went on with "I think the money would be better spent on a coach." Surprisingly he agreed wholeheartedly. However, the people buying those help keep him in business!

So, I have come to the conclusion that a tri-coach is some of the best $ I have spent so far.

The CT mount is kind of small, It doesn't work well with my Shimano or Sams Specialized Quick Releases.  We had a simple round one from her old mtn bike and that is what we use.  I suppose if your QR will fit then no problem using that one, though if you are picky and don't want scratches on a nice pretty QR, then use theirs.

I used their Cadence sensor.  It just velcro's on when you need it.  The magnet (at least mine) was pretty simple kind of like a rubber band to hold it on.  I would leave it on most of the time unless I was racing.  That sensor is also used for the spinscan tool.

Unfortunately the cable got wrapped around my cranks one day and snapped and haven't gotten around to replacing it.  These days I just use my PT to record all my workout stuff anyways so not a big loss, though I do like the spinscan.

Which HR monitor did yours come with?  Mine has the old clip one which stinks.  The newer ones have a wireless sensor that works with the polar straps.  Again I use my PT for HR stuff so don't use that either these days.

Basically if you can capture all the data you want some other way then you don't have to use any of the cables except the one that connects to the computer.  If you want to have a nice report and graph after your ride that the CT can spit out showing power, cadence, hr, etc then you need to use the cables.

Also keep in mind that there is a bug with the 3d program that I forgot about until recently.  If you do a course and don't finish it, the report will have all 0's in it.  So you have to finish the ride to get a report.  No idea why they never fixed it.  You can always load up your last performance in the coaching software to look at your ride afterwards if you don't have the report.  You can see all the totals there also.

Thanks Steve and Tony the info is very helpful.  Hopefully the setup is pretty easy, it looks fairly straight forward but looks like it can be a hassle if you have to put on and off all the wires if you ride outdoors frequently as well.  I'm probably going to go the route of putting on as little on the bike as possible..  I'm looking at the parts list it looks like it's supposed to come with the polar wireless transmitter but i'm pretty sure mine didn't come with it.  I guess that's what you get if you buy used, though I'm sure you can buy it fairly cheap.

I put some velcro on the back of my handle bar controller and stick it to an old shelf in my basement where the CT is, that keeps it out of the way.  The only real hassle cable is the cadence one but there should be some velcro attached to the sensor so you don't have to do much to install/remove it.

tahrens - 2010-01-05 12:30 PM Happy 2010 everyone.

1. A lot of good talk about swim strokes,

2. Jeremy got clipped so no more little ones,

3. Discussions of gaining weight over the holidays

4. People working their way back from injury

5. John ran a sub 7 minute mile!,

6. people are trying to work out their race schedule,

7. Suzy's GURU is being shipped,

8. A lot of whining/discussions about bad weather, except Kim who lives in paradise,

Did I forget anything important?

Doug

What does everyone think about doing other strokes during your swim training?  At my lunch time swim today, I swam with another guy who is typically there at lunch.  He suggested a set that included choice of stroke mixed in with freestyle.  He essentially did IM through out the set but I really only do breast stroke efficiently so that is what I used.  It was a great work out...just wondering if it gains me a lot for a tri swim.  When I swim with my masters group, we occasionally do stroke work too.

This certainly gives me a good workout and helps me be a more rounded swimmer but does it do much for me as a triathlete???
