SHORT DISTANCE TRAINING REALITY MOMENT

when it takes you 1.5 miles to warm up a 3 mile run is a lot harder than it should be!!!!

Huh?

It takes me half  the run before I start to feel good.  When I run longer distances the amount of time I "feel good" is usually longer than the "feel like crap warm up" time.  Not so with short runs.  Guess this is a personal problem.

Just run more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But it's so much easier to complain about it.Wink

What's your warm-up?  Mine is typically 3-5' walk, 10'ez, 5' drills.  Don't include this in the 3m run and problem is solved.  I agree the warm-up makes the run so much better, especially the drills.

I agree.  Most times I do a warm up but tonight I was trying to squeeze in a run between children chauffeuring so it was hit the pavement running.  Speaking of which, off to get Thing 2 from gymnastics.

HA - who has time to warm up!!!  I'm usually still eating my pre-run snack as I walk out the door and hope I don't get peanut butter on my Garmin.

I'm sure we've talked about this before, but what drills do you do, Suzy? I am really slow to warm up ( seriously, takes me about 5 miles before the run starts feeling good) and wonder if doing something like this would help.

Ok so after the 5' walk and the 10' super ez run, I stop and do 10 front skips (high and full of life like a kid), 10 walk, 10 back skips, 10 walk, 10 side shuffle left and then right, 10 grapevin left and right,  10 horsekick left, 10 horsekick right, 10 B skip which is where your leg is straighter in front of you when kicking and then I do some hamstring waking up because my left hamstring is weaker (not sure how to explain those).  This whole thing takes me a mere 4-5' to accomplish and I swear my gait is better.  If I am doing speed work I always have a set of strides in there before the big show and it is something like 10" stride, 30" walk, 15" stride, 45" walk, 20" stride, 1' walk).  One thing I've learned under my new toolage (no this isn't some dirty talk) is that walking as part of nearly every run is a-ok.

All-very jealous of your REV3 peeps getting together in a few months.  I will have to be content knowing I will see the other half in Florida in November.  Who's in again?  Fatty, Doug, Linda, me...any others?

Hey, over here!

I'm in too!  Along with my wife and son.  Great reason to spend a weekend at the Redneck Riviera.  Besides, someone's gotta keep up with John's beer.

Given that John will be racing and I will be policing his consumption before the race you can carry the beer torch!

And in case anyone is wondering why the heck I am sitting on my pc in Hawaii, it's because it's a frickin' wind storm and pouring on and off today.

Interesting.  Did he pull it because of the comments in the thread itself or because someone complained.   Anyway, there are still a couple posts remaining that include the pic for those of you who liked it.

I found looking at his shiny butt a bit uncomfortable BUT its my right to look at naked men if I choose to!!! Bring back the naked dude (but add a few naked women to balance it out!) BTW the pool picture was art so doesn't count...

RANDOM OFF-TOPIC MUSING:  Why is it that when my trainer shows me an exercise that he wants me to do, it looks so easy and he does it so gracefully, but when I try to do it, I look like a bumbling ogre?

For example, last night, he had me hold a medicine ball with straight arms in front of me and do side lunges sitting deeply in the lunge facing forward and then rotating my upper body and the medicine ball.  When he did it, he was crisp and clean and it looked easy.  But when I did it, it was really hard and I looked like a doofus.

I am sure that part of this is because I need to strengthen my core -- which is one of the purposes of that particular exercise.  But still... (A small part of me wonders whether he and other trainers have their clients do these exercises because of the humor value of how ridiculous we look doing them.)

I get what you're saying.  It takes me about 10 minutes of running before I start liking it.  I actually attempted a running streak (where I had to do at least 1 mile a day) in December.  I abandoned it because I hated the days where I only did a mile.  I didn't like any of those runs, and I didn't want to make them longer because I didn't want to increase overall mileage too much.

Can you hear me over the sound of the crashing waves?  I hope so because we want to know WHO'S GETTING THEIR GROOVE ON AND RACING THIS WEEKEND?

With many of you already starting training plans for your first race or "A" race of the season, let's get the fear out on the table. What worries you most as you prepare for it? why?  how are you overcoming it?  if you're not, how can we help?

My fear is the run, especially the longer ones, e.g., 26.2 in November! I am training hard, losing weight and doing what my coach tells me to do. Hopefully I will be full of confidence by then.

In a related note I had my best run in a looonnnnggggg time this morning. I put it in my log. I ran 6.01 miles in 50 minutes. I took about 5-10 minutes to find my rhythm but after that it took off. I warmed up for 15 minutes and then did 3 x 1 mile at Z3 with 3 minutes jogging in between and then a cool down. I felt great throughout and had a nice endorphin rush afterwards.

It was not until after the run that I realized I never once thought about my achillies. Experienced not one twinge! Now my knee still needs some streching but it is coming along. I am enthusiastic about what running will be like as more weight comes off. I might even enkjoy the run leg of a triathlon one day!

The run scares me as well.  I was toast at the end of my one and only marathon to date so to think I will have to run one after covering 114.4 miles has me scared s#!)less.

Similar to Doug... giving every work out my best (including adding in a little Z3/Z4 here and there for fun), obtaining race weight, and nailing my nutrition.  My diet has changed dramatically in the last couple months and looking forward to testing myself in some longer runs/rides once the plan gets me there.

My answer is pretty easy. I had a great IM last year. right now I am scared SH$$LESS about not having as good of a day.

I know the right answer is to just train, get to the big day injury free, and enjoy the process.

But realistically, if that day sucks I will be disappointed.

Hey all,  been absent for a while and just had a few minutes to breeze through and catch up.  I want to apologize for anyone that may have been offended by certain post.  However I have to say that while we are always sensitive to peoples feelings post like that are what make this group what it is.  They are always meant in good humor and that is why many of us love to be here.  We love to learn, educate others and laugh are butts off!

If you are new to the group there is a reason that we have been around since day one and there is a reason that everyone has stuck around group after group after group.  There is a reason that John's name should no longer be Fatty, there is a reason that Doug is FINALLY doing an ironman.  TRUST THIS GROUP and give it a chance.  NO ILL INTEND is ever meant towards people in this group.

Not racing this weekend BUT just signed up for the Grand Rapids Marathon in October! It will be my first marathon and as of right now, no fears, just excited!

But I have another question - how do you determine how much rest to have when swimming intervals? I usually give myself about 10 sec/100 but someone was telling me that there is a difference in your types of swim training if you give yourself a short rest vs  a long rest - but it turned into mumbo jumbo in my head. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I'm not racing this weekend.

Fears: Hills! I just want to do better at Hills. And there are alot around here.  I would like to do the St George Ironman someday. So I need to do hills hills and more hills for that race.
