Oooooh! Highest tri in the world. I may have to sign up for that next year. (My HIM calendar is full this year already.) I'm a sucker for stuff like that. Although I can testify that "World's only triathlon right on the equator!" (ad for Bintan tri in Indonesia one year; you can even do a HIM or full IM at the Metaman race on the same island later in the summer) really SHOULDN'T be used to promote a race. Think tropical heat, 100% humidity, jellyfish, and a deluge that tends to hit at some point during the races. Think I would take the altitude instead. There is also a tri at Donner Pass--we drove through the night before the race once and they had all the signs up.

Speaking of, now that I'm nice and acclimated to the cold weather wearing shorts below freezing and such, I'm headed to Oahu to melt on my runs. I'm taking my mom camping on the beach. It should be a great adventure and some good quality time.

One suggestion if you're in the Honolulu area--run the Tantalus loop (about 14-15 miles if you start at downtown/Waikiki, less from university area). My favorite loop of all time! Quiet road through rain forest with amazing views of the city, Diamond Head, and ocean on the way back. Any running or bike shop should be able to give you directions/a map. There are also awesome trail runs on Tantalus but it might be best to go with a local group as they can be difficult to follow and the forest is really dense with lots of dead end trails leading to drop-offs! I went to grad school at UH and really enjoyed the running there.

For a 20 km swim, I seriously think I would require delivery of a large pizza on a kick board at about 10K.

For Salty (and anyone else who likes Hawaii) RE Honolulu running:

I posted pics of the Tantalus run last year in "Enjoyable Workouts" thread on the Challenge Forum. Other fav loops are Kapiolani Park/Diamond Head (again, most running shops should be able to show you; it's probably online somewhere too; easily accessible from Waikiki hotels); Manoa Valley(where UH is) to Manoa Falls, and Nuuanu Pali Drive (but it's a busy road). I have some others that are awesome (Palolo Valley, St. Louis Heights, Makiki Heights to Punchbowl to Chinatown) but difficult to explain. Google Maps should help!

For recovery and refueling, I recommend the amazing food court and smoothie places at Ala Moana mall, and Ala Moana Beach right across the street. It's where all the locals hang out and actually a much nicer beach than Waikiki. Ala Moana is also a bus exchange and you can get buses to/from most of the places mentioned above.

I still wonder how I managed to live in Hawaii for two years, be very active in running and swimming groups, and never get into triathlon. I don't even recall anyone trying to persuade me to sign up for one--all my local run and swim buddies were into kayaking!

Well... I sorta raced today. Actually, I just ran. Yesterday the doc diagnosed me with a 50:50 chance of either an infection OR a huge allergy attack. So we chose to do a round of steroids for a week to see if that will help rather than going with antibiotics. When I told her I was running the HM this morning she told me straight to my face I was stupid. The temps at the start were at 28 degrees. I chose to be smart and after not sleeping last night for chills and did this on the treadmill. I am glad I did. I was really hoping to do this on "pavement' to see how much slower I will be, and to check out the course AND get the damn finisher medal! BUT, I will live to fight another day. And, because it was on the treadmill, as slow as it was, it was a PB for me.

Brrrr... You have more sense than I do, apparently. (Did Vietnam 70.3 last year with the flu.) Makes me feel better about the docs here that even in the US they cannot always tell the difference between an infection and a massive allergy attack. That has happened twice and both times I just wondered if they were incompetent....suppose it could actually be both at the same time. If you were here I'd give you a finisher's medal--I have a big basket full of them. (Sometimes give them to my students as prizes for various things.)

My Race Report from last week's aquathlon is finally up. Hope I don't come off as too much of a whiner about the whole "elite wave" thing. On the plus side, it did get me good and pissed off well before the race, and I tend to race well when I have revenge on my mind. Unfortunately so did my AG rival! It's normally the shortest race I ever do--seems babyish beside Kingsley's 20K swim!

No, No incompetent is when you go to the Dr because you have a sore leg that the bone hurts in and the Dr doesn't look or touch you leg at all. She cant find the x-rays that you spent 5 hours at the hospital having done, and then openly does a Google search in front of you to see what might be causing the issue. Oh and that will be $70 thanks...

Seriously this was the experience of my sister at the Dr about a fortnight ago. When she told me I nearly wet myself laughing, Esther however did not see the funny side of it at all. Oh her leg still hurts and she still has no idea why, it is a 3 month wait to get an appointment to see a different Dr in the town where they live.

That's what I thought too. 15 minutes later they were playing "hide & seek" and apparently, bath tub (with a bike in it) was one of the greatest places...

Well I managed to find myself on the DL.  I've been on a weightlifting kick the past few weeks, which has been going great until last week.

Was doing leg press Tuesday and felt a pop in my lower left ribcage on my last set.  Usually I try to go a little further back than normal to avoid cheating on this workout, but I think I went down too far and too fast.  I got through the set ok, but was spooked by it.  Later on as adrenaline wore off I felt a bit of pain in the area.  I had a rest day Wednesday, which was timely.  I worked chest and triceps Thursday, which I got through ok, but later on once again could feel pain my lower left ribcage.  Then Friday I started coming down with a cold.  I spent the weekend recovering from both.

I feel better as far as the cold goes, but the rib injury is concerning.  I've googled it online, and apparently rib injuries through leg press is pretty common, so I need to be a bit more careful with that one.  I'm taking this week to let it heal more and play be ear from here.  Everything that I've read seen seems to think that rest is the way to take care of this.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
