I ran yesterday, so I'm thinking it's time to get the bike outside. It's 60 degrees. Have to do something to take advantage of the weather! |

You will find lots of support and some HTFU sprinkled in when needed. I live in New Mexico but am from Colorado and do a lot of races there (a little less this year for the sake of my marriage). As a matter of fact both my sons and I are doing the Runnin of the Green downtown with my SIL next Sunday! I've not done any of the tri's you mentioned. I've done Tri for the Cure which is an amazing beginner friendly, women only, OWS sprint. It has an incredible atmosphere! DS2 (dear son #2) and I are considering Tri Rock this year. It is out at Aurora as well. Anyway, welcome! This is a great group and there is no such thing as a silly or stupid question. |

Veteran 2842 Austin, Texas | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by laffinrock Hi, All. Yanti kindly gave in to my begging and let me join the party at this late date. So glad to be here!! Here's a bit of info about me: Name: Mary (laffinrock=laughing rock=merry stone; you get the picture. Just don't take me for granite.) I'm taking another shot at doing my first tri this year. As a kid, I spent my time running, biking, and playing in the water even though I didn't really know how to swim. As I got older, those activities got replaced by music (played oboe, sang in several choirs) and other stuff. I took swimming lessons about 12 years ago. I didn't do much swimming after that until recently, even though I know how good it is for my body and soul. I've always enjoyed being active, doing stuff like hiking with the dogs and working in my garden. My DH did some tris a few years ago and a friend has done a couple. Every time I watched, I kept thinking, "I could do that." In June 2011, I finally decided to do one, trained for 10 days and hurt my back. (Back bend over exercise ball to ease tightness in SI area, then couldn't sit/stand/walk for a couple weeks and significant pain until very recently.) Between chronic pain, depression, and some major family drama, it's been a rough couple years. Now, 2 hip surgeries later (3/2012 and 7/2013) and a near-miss with back surgery, I've found a chiropractor who has me feeling strong and confident enough to tackle my goal again. I have a wonderful partner, Alex; we've been together for 16 years. We have 3 fur kids: 2 border collies and a cat. One of the BCs, Shanti, is my avatar as well as my inspiration. She has bad hips (2 surgeries before she was a year) but is the funniest, most playful, and smartest dog I've ever met. She has been gimpy lately but doesn't let that stop her one bit. She just bounces around and lets me know that she has 3 perfectly good legs so throw the toy already! Her wonderful lack of self-pity and pure joy make me laugh even on my darkest days. I've mostly been swimming and doing core strengthening exercises, with the occasional 2-3 mile hilly walk with the dogs. Going to start adding in the bike this week, then walking. Not sure I'll get to running this year; if not this year, then maybe next year. I'll just to play it by ear and see what my 45 year-old body will tolerate. Don't have any races scheduled yet but am shooting for a sprint later this summer. Maybe the Rattlesnake (Aurora), Boulder Sundown, or Fort Collins. I think I can handle an open-water swim, but my DH keeps suggesting I go with a pool swim. Not sure yet which way I'll go. No races last year. Before surgery last July, I had a hard time even walking around for 15 min., could swim 800 yds. but only with a pull buoy and biking was completely out of the question. I'm 5'7" and 140 lbs. I'm really lucky to have never had much difficulty with weight or flexibility but am seriously lacking in strength and endurance. I'm mostly interested in increasing strength and endurance; if I lost some weight, I wouldn't mind - that would just be an added bonus. Looking forward to spending time with everybody here! m Welcome Mary! This group will be a great support for you as you tackle your tri this season. Matt |

Master 3870 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Congrats on the PR, Salty! Way to shake the doubts. Puuuuupppppies. Woohoo! You've got your hands full for the next 8-10 weeks. Whew! Happy belated, Judi Welcome to our special little group, Mary. If you were begging Yanti to get in, you already know the risks Ugh...I know I'm missing things. I'll come back and read more. Trying to do this quickly before taking a possibly sick girl to bed. Had a great weekend! Watched Taylor spend a couple of muddy hours on his dirtbike; spent this morning hiking/running the mountains just north of us; tried on my new suit...in the shower while Jason gave me pointers on fit. I think I finally got it close, but need to try in pool soon. Such a strange feeling...makes me very glad it's sleeveless! TJ, I've thought about Tri for the Cure but thought I'd start with a smaller race instead. Just checked out Tri Rock - the sprint looks like a possibility. The Rattlesnake is now known as the 5430 YOLO. Would you be doing the sprint or Oly? |

Love your Garmin-'gyle "sleeves"! Stacey, congrats on the new babies. Puppy breath x 12 = wow! Yanti, congrats on the wedding plans! I'm honored that you took the time out of your busy schedule to let me join the pod. Now to bed. This daylight savings time thing always throws me off. My brain seems to think it's only 9:30 so there's no reason to be sleepy and my body will vigorously disagree with the notion that 6:30 really means 6:30, despite the lack of dog in my face. The beasts seem to take their cues from the sun and let me sleep an "extra" hour this morning before launching their attacks. I'm sure they'll happily resume their alarm clock augmentation duties soon. 'Night all. m |

Sleeveless is usually easier to figure out as the shoulders are the most critical and most difficult to size right. |

Sleeveless is usually easier to figure out as the shoulders are the most critical and most difficult to size right. At first I thought it would choke me. I'm VERY glad it's sleeveless. I think I can get legs up another 1/2 inch to give body a little more room, but felt like it was a good first try-on. And getting in the shower did loosen it up a bit, so my shoulders didn't feel so pulled down or neck tight. Now I'm curious how it will feel actually swimming in it. |

Master 7712 Orlando | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Originally posted by 4agoodlife Thank goodness I do not have to wear a wet suit that often - I find them so constricting! I do, however, find a 2-piece better for me. Having it also gives me the opportunity to only wear the bottoms to get the hip lift for those races that while technically wet suit legal aren't really that cold, eg, any Florida race that says it's wet suit legal Originally posted by brigby1 Originally posted by 4agoodlife Had a great weekend! Well done Salty on the HM PR I've got the Mooloolaba tri this weekend, I'm the least prepared I've ever been for an Oly so not expecting much, weather's predicted to be 33 celcius and sunny so the run will be "interesting". After the tri I'm going to change my regime to heavy lifting and HIIT cardio plus surfing, can't wait! |

Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2014--CLOSED (begging & bribes MAY work) Took a little road trip on Saturday to VA to Bonzai to get refit on Rico (my tri bike for those not in the know is named Rico, as in Rico from Copacabana..."his name was Rico, he wore a diamond..."). The changes I had done last year were causing back pain so I wanted to get back to a comfortable position so I don't dislike riding. Argh, of course it was a GORGEOUS day which is great for driving but also tough to spend in a car when it would've been nice to be outside on the bike! It was also about 10-15 degrees warmer in VA than PA, and standing outside with bike shorts on was comfortable! I got some really good service and Rico is hooked up! Refit, new aerobars (I needed shorter ones), which also translated to new cables and housings (no charge for those, yay!), new tape (and I asked if I could watch him put it on so I can do it myself next time) and a tune-up. I also got the low down on why Rev3 Half Full was cancelled and the dirt on the whole Tri-Columbia debacle. While they were doing the mechanical stuff, we went to lunch at an Argentinian restaurant where I tried a bunch of new things like intestines, sweetbreads and blood sausage, all part of this ginormous meat platter which I chose not because I'm a huge meat eater (I'm not, especially red meat) but rather to get a very authentic, specialty meal. Intestines and sweetbreads were OK but I didn't like the blood sausage at all. No me gusta! The other cuts of meat that I tried (I ate pieces of the NY strip, ribs, Argentinian sausage, pork chops) were out of this world. I still have a huge amount of leftovers at home!
