Apparently I am INTJ. No idea.
Sometimes it only takes one race for THE BIG story...but I'm still waiting for mine too. ISTJ...now to read up if it's "right".

Every race is a big story. Get out there and party; you paid for it!

I agree with that sentiment! I have never done a race where I haven't had some story to tell afterward. Of course, some stories are better than others As far as the Jung personality test, I am an ISTJ. Of course, the results showed I am not much of any of those types. Per the test:I: moderate preference of introversion over extraversion.S: moderate preference of sensing over intuition.T: marginal or no preference of thinking over feeling.J: moderate preference in judging over perceiving.Others with those characteristics include: Harry Truman, Amelia Earhart, Prince Charles and Greta Garbo.I retook the test from a different provider and got ISFP, so who knows what my personality really is!

This is a really big training week (miles) so I was a little curious about how last night's track workout was going to go, especially within the full week. (that of course is still TBD)

Also, just to keep things interesting I forgot my sports bra AND socks AND all of my stuff was wet from my jog earlier in the day. SO ... there you have it, the start of my track workout in soggy clothes, a regular bra and dress socks (again.)

Anyway, the workout was 4 x 1600 with 2.5 minutes rest in between.

I decided to buck up and go with the faster group. We were supposed to go @ 6:27 pace per mile.

We hit 6:22 on the first mile and it felt sooo smooth and easy. Of course we were doing 4 so I didn't want to get ahead of myself.

Rep number 2 we got in 6:18. My coach gave us the go ahead to conservatively keep it up so the next two were 6:16 and 6:12! For the first time I dropped everyone in that last mile and felt great!

This is coming into week 7 of marathon training so it seems to be falling in that 4-6 weeks where you start to see training adaptions taking place. Anyway, it's really exciting to see changes happening!

Soggy clothes, regular bra and dress socks and you STILL rocked the group, awesome!!!  It's very neat to see you seeing the fruits of your efforts.  Keep up the good work, and maybe start keeping a bag with an extra sports bra and socks in your car, just in case!

YANTI STORY TIME!

I wear big sparkly dangly earrings on every single one of my long runs (I had Christmas earrings in my IMWA trans bag but forgot to put them on!) and marathons. Ah! You can see them here in my Calif In'tl Marathon finisher photo.

But why, you ask? Well, see ... I went to this Hallowe'en party (dressed as Princess Jasmine, but like evil and on crack, from Aladdin) and kinda sorta went home with this lumberjack who turned out to be a triathlete. ANYWAY ... OF COURSE the next day is our marathon long run training day ... I totally oversleep and do not remotely have time to go home to get my things. Triathlete boy (no, I have no idea what his name was ... I think it was Chris something or other; he was an undergrad at USC while I was teaching there. But he was a music student and they're weird so it doesn't count Tongue out) had a pair of running shorts and tech socks he loaned me, I had my runnies in my car so that was all good ... ARGH! Sports bra! We made one out of a pair of his tighty whities (see below for example). And he actually gave me a triathlon finisher shirt to run in--very cool. I was not a triathlete yet, but I thought that was very cool.

So I show up at the long run--I really have to because, gulp, I'm the pacer/guardian/cheerleader for my group--in this getup, a crapton of (smeared) makeup on my face, and it turns out to be a good thing because my group burned a good 10 miles just making fun of me.

I had forgotten to take my big dangly sparkly Princess Jasmine earrings off. I ran the whole damn run with them on!

Ever since then, it was just a thing. I had to wear my hooker earrings on long runs/races.

Hahaha I love it. You should be sure to document the earings you wear for each race and make a photo collage.

Cal INTL. I will probably be doing that race someday. More than likely minus the USC undergrad the night before.

ponderingfox - 2013-01-24 6:26 PM Just came across this article on NYTimes.com "Is There an Ideal Running Form?"  I'm sure this pot has been stirred many times, but I'd love to hear responses to this article that is more pro heal strike.

Check out the thread in TT: http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=475752&posts=12&start=1

Personally, I think everyone has their own ideal way to run. If you are conservative and sloooowly and cautiously increase volume and frequency your body will naturally adjust to run as efficiently as it can and is supposed to.

So, what do you do?

I run like a gazelle of course Wink

Nah, I don't know. It's been a long time since I have had my gait analyzed (I only did it once over a year ago, when I got my first pair of running shoes and had NO clue what it all meant at the time.)

I suppose I could get some video and you could all tell me.

Honestly though, I have continued to see improvements and remained relatively injury free with high mileage and increasing quality. I have to believe that my body has done it's job in migrating towards an efficient running style(if it wasn't already doing it to start.)

Gooooooo Chad!

No test runs yet, but back to slowly building strengthening again.  Still aquarunning a couple times a week.  I'm optimistic that I will be running within the next two weeks.  Of course, running is a relative term....and I'm ok with that.  I am totally prepared to start from zero and build slowly.

I AM TRI-ATHENA!!!

posted 04/10/05

Many thanks to my well-wishers (and by the way, I've enabled non-member comments again).  I am tremendously pleased to report that I am indeed alive, moreover, having as much skin as I entered the triathlon with, and if any other racers don't, at least it wasn't on account of me.

And, since I am making the world a better place simply because people laugh a lot when they see me (not sure why ... must ponder ... ) I tootled my turtle-squeaky-horn with vigor every time I passed a race volunteer. By the third lap some of them were chanting, "Squeak that cute horn!" I hope they were talking about the turtle.

I didn't come in dead last, either, which really surprised me.  Triathletes are a pretty dedicated bunch--I mean, THEY didn't have squeaky horns or streamers on their bikes--but I finished in the top five in my division (okay, okay, there were only five in my division).

I wasn't last in the run (the first leg), but I was by far the last cyclist in--even the runners behind me had overtaken me.  However, I passed several people in the transition between bike/swim and then charged ahead of several more during the swim.  And now I really am going to tootle my own horn (I deserve it, dammit!)--I'm a great swimmer.  I clocked a faster swim time than some of the top finishers, despite that on the last 150m both my legs were completely cramped up and I was windmilling ahead on arms only, pulling dead leg weight behind me.

Not bad for a little girl who just learned how to ride a bicycle.

A final note: technically, this was a 'sprint' triathlon--4mi run, 10mi bike, 400m swim. All I can say is, no bloody event lasting more than ten minutes should ever be called a sprint.  Ever.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. Love reading stories. Love that you did it on that bike! I think we get so wrapped up some times on the right gadget, perfect aero postions, the best wheels and we forget we are out there to just have fun.

Well I have been injury free since I started my new sport 9 months ago and today my first hiccup. IT Band Flared up. Never had a problem with this before. Went to the Dr and he said I caught it right away. an hour of massaging, stretches and ice and I feel better. Going to go easy on my ride tomorrow, skip my brick run, and probably cut my Sunday run fairly short. Hopefully back strong next week.

Kristen, I totally forgot to answer your question - Sorry about that.

My .02 cents.  The 2 shorter 1500 meter swims would be better for your overall conditioning and training, but only if you break them up into sets.  I would do 1 long swim every other week, not every week.

Break 1 1500 meter day into sets (6 x 250, or my favorite, a combination of 10 x 100 intervals and 2 x 250).  If you can't hold a challenging interval for the 10 x 100, start with 5 x 100, then a 250, then 5 x 100, then a 250.

I would probably add this 1500 meter broken set in weekly - giving you a 3rd day per week, then would do 1 long swim on a 4th day every other week.  Does that makes sense?

So your week might look like this:

1st week:  Mon & Tues Masters... Thursday (1,500 meter broken set).

2nd week: Mon & Tues Masters....Thursday (1,500 meter broken set) - Saturday (2,500 meter long swim)

Repeat and build each week until you reach your goal.

Really curious to hear Yanti's advice on this one though...even if it totally disagrees with mine.    I am great at analyzing a swim stroke, but still building my knowledge of the body and the best way to build for the individual events of a tri.

Kirsten and Skrat -- overall, yes, I agree with this. Some finer points:

I assume you'd be adding TWO ~1500m swims for a total of 4 workouts per week? Yes, I'd definitely add the two workouts, and do them in intervals ... HARD intervals. If you really need to, take the first 1-2 intervals as warm-up, but frankly, you're not gonna die if you don't. You might feel like it, but that's kind of the point.

There are two general ways to do HARD intervals: either on a send-off time that's just barely within your grasp (and perhaps not at all for the last 2 repeats or so) OR to extend them 50-100m beyond what you feel like you can swim hard. In that sense, an A x 100m type set with some B x 250m could be ideal, provided that around 200 is where your hard swimming starts to trail off / break down in form / slow down / etc.

I'm not sold on the value of a long continuous swim unless someone's swimming 5-6x/week and really focusing on swimming ... honestly, possibly not even then. There is no doubt that if you can suffer through a tough 1500m main set or workout, you can swim a solid continuous 1500m in race conditions. In terms of ROI for swim time, unless someone's actually swimming TO BE A SWIMMER with that kind of training time available and actually done, I think the long continuous swim is weak.

The exception is that a 1000/1500 yd/m time trial can be very helpful for setting productive interval training paces and gauging progress. With a proper warmup and cool-down, seems like a good idea (if you're swimming a lot and want to focus that much on it) every couple of months.

Thanks, you guys.  Yes, I have been doing a couple other swims for a total of 4.  The shorter on-my-owns are 1000-1500m.  And I have been doing intervals .  I hate long continuous swims unless I am in the open water, so there is no risk of me wasting my time on that in the pool Wink.  I have been multi-tasking actually at my pool sessions--last night I did some aqua-running, I did some water walking, and I did 1000yds swimming.  I need to feel like I am getting my money's worth!!  I am still really having to work on pacing and remembering that I am actually faster when I slow down.  The minute I try to swim 'hard' my form craps out and I slow down.  So I am focusing on form, and pushing the interval times.  Seems to be working.

awesome celeb stalking yet again Jo!

We took the dogs to the beach this morning so got in a short OWS. I am happy to report I can now reclaim my Manatee status because I managed to get over my irrational face in the water fear, even felt good enough to focus on my form. The water wasn't very clear either so it was a good test.

I must say swimming with a pack of dogs is a bit like a triathlon group start. But I think I have less bruises and scratches today.

HAPPY AUSTRALIA DAY EVERYONE!
