Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Thank you everyone for all of the prayers and condolences. Needless to say, we have had a rough month. We were blessed in a lot of ways through this and in many ways we did not expect. Having the opportunity to have my Dad live with us for the past six months was good for me and my family. My kids have always been close to my parents. It was great to rebuild that connection with him as adults. He did everything with us during that time, and he had a great six months. He passed comfortably, without pain, and surrounded by his children and grandchildren. He was at the nursing home my Mom is at and so she was by his side. She did not understand what was happening. My oldest daughter pointed out a blessing that we did not consider. Because my Mom's Alzheimer's is so advanced she will never grieve the loss of her husband of 59 years and because he passed first, he will never mourn the loss of his wife. We hope to get back to our new normal this week. Edited by JBacarella 2016-08-07 9:26 PM |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Jim, so sorry to hear of the loss of your father. I'm sure it doesn't make it easier for you, but it does seem like a blessing that your folks have been spared the grief of mourning for each other. I wonder about this with mine a lot--how one would cope with the loss of the other. |

My Uncle and our cat both passed last week. Because of his Alzheimer's, he relived both deaths every few hours after we told him for two days. I could only imagine how he would grieve the death of my Mother. |

Master 9705 Raleigh, NC area | Subject: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Still on the road myself but Jonathan asked me to share this with a of you. --- Ironman Boulder certainly lived up to its reputation of a tough race. It was a violent and rough 2.4 mile swim (did anyone else swim thru grass on the back side?), a beautiful and hilly 112 mile bike course, and a 26.2 mile run course that was much more difficult than expected. I did not have the race I expected from a time stand point. Early in the swim I began to cramp and I never recovered. The bike and run became survival however: I still ended up with a PR on the swim, PR on the bike, beat my overall first ironman time and completed my second full ironman. |

It's so good you all could be there with him at the end, too, no doubt he was comforted by your presence. My sincerest condolences and prayers. |

436 | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois Has anyone else been watching the Olympic swimming events? I find it funny now that I've had a lesson and am so focused on learning the right technique that I love watching the "pros" and seeing how even the slowest swimmers seem to do everything perfectly. I used to watch just to watch but now knowing at least conceptually what perfect form is and what makes them so much faster than the rest of us makes it so much more enjoyable (for me anyway). |

I agree! Although I haven't been swimming much (at all) I still enjoy the under water camera angle so I can watch their technique. |

Pretend the pool is still 25. With how tall they tend to be it might look fairly close. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatee Mentors 2016 - Manatee à trois I am just in awe of the distance swimmers....Ledecky's winning (and, I think, world-record) time for the 400m was UNDER ONE MINUTE PER 100m. I'm a decent swimmer (by tri standards) with some competitive swim background. I specialized in distance (500m and 1500m) in high school and from about age 11 on with summer teams. At times we trained 8-10K a day. I don't think even at my peak I could do five minutes for the 400m! Close, maybe, but not five flat and certainly not under. Never broken one minute for the 100m. Clearly in addition to absolutely perfect technique (her, not me!), she is working with a bit more than most of us have been given in the genetic department. Good there is a sport like tri where basically the goal, as my dad puts it, is to be kinda sorta good at three different sports, rather than outstanding at one! More up my alley. (Although, still, I look at someone like Daniela Ryf and realize, no, I don't have what it takes, or didn't, back in my 20's and 30's, either. Maybe if I could switch to a better body.) |
