Hi, Pod. Travel day today so just now getting a chance to check in. If there's any benefit to be had from being on the DL, it's nice to be able to travel without having to think about when and where I can do my workouts. On the other hand, when I did do that the last couple times I traveled, I felt like a badazz. :-) This time, not only am I not working out but I'll be eating all kinds of yummy food. Hopefully my jeans will still fit when I get home!! Not going to waste energy feeling guilty though. I'm just going to relish the break and plan to get down to brass tacks when I get home.

Welcome back, Jen! I've been wondering what you were up to. Good to hear that you're on the mend and itching to get back to training. Although the actual itching must be pretty sucky.

Way to go, fishies!! As another adult onset swimmer, I'm in awe!!

Gotta go figure out which place to gorge at this evening now.

Carry on.

My take on Strava and others like it is that the motivation is upped for some folks. Ask MattTx I like the ability to learn a little bit about different people all in one feed. Compare and contrast what they are doing with what I'm doing. That is simply a learning tool for me, not a "I have to keep up" thing. I also love the IG tie in just to see where/how others are training. 1000 words type of thing.

I enjoy Strava on two very different levels. The first is that in one easy to access thread I can see that Chris rode his pacman, or rode the coast (jealous) and where Janyne road and/or ran, and Erin and J cruising with or without kids, and see Mary (and Kara)running in neighborhoods I know, and Darren's overseas exploits (and the funny names he gives them... and on and on with so many manatees. And I can give and receive encouragement at the same time. The other side, involves the local challenges but is oddly less personal. I can try to better my fitness by competeing against local riders on the same segments, but I don't communicate with them.

Oh man! Strava is awesome for many reasons.

For me Strava gives the most in depth data available to cyclists in a very easy to read format.  The Fitness/Fatigue chart has been invaluable for determining how ready I am for an upcoming race.  The critical power curve with FTP estimation is good.  The data analysis for rides and runs is the best I've seen out of Garmin, Training Peaks, Golden Cheetah, and this site.

The segments can make otherwise boring rides a lot more fun.

The new training plans offered to premium members looks promising.  I'm starting one of them now, and it looks pretty good so far.

Finally there's the social media aspect of it.  Sharing workouts with fellow athletes is pretty cool, and being able to post your workouts in a world where it's welcome vs Facebook which can have people that are negative towards exercise is nice.

I really enjoy Strava.  I wish that my phone battery would last longer on my *really* long rides.  It typically dies about 40 miles in.

Speaking of FitBit, I'm seriously considering replacing my FitBit One.  I like having a fitness tracker, and my Garmin wouldn't work for daily steps.  I was considering the Apple Watch, but I think that's going to be more than I want to spend and deal with.

Anyone have suggestions?  I like the FitBit Charge HR - it takes your heart rate throughout the day.  Would love to hear what you use.

We were able to put our Android phones on "airplane mode" for our long rides and still use Strava. Helped a lot with saving battery.

Backwards or forwards? How do I read???

In-laws arrive on Friday, so it's been busy around here "visitorizing" the house. J has gotten some projects done that have been put off (painting rooms, organizing his office, working on his Land Cruiser), and I'm trying to get back to healthy. Did my first mostly run today since Friday before last. I didn't collapse.  Good news is that the crud didn't go into my chest.  However, the HM I was wanting to do this weekend is off the table. Booo

A coworker of mine has the Charge HR and loves it.  I think that Stacey is also looking at it (or other fitness trackers).  I have the Garmin because I am in Garmin Connect anyway and because I can't be bothered with recharging another thing and this sucker has a 1 year battery.  Fitbit is cooler though ;-)

I believe that DC Rainmaker is expected to have a review of the FitBit Charge HR sometime this week. I just checked and it's not there yet.

Glad that you are feeling better.  Sorry about the half marathon :-(

ETA: Does this mean that the DL is shrinking?!

Alright! I'm officially official in the cool club of the cool club. Strava is pretty cool now that I'm in a group! The competitive juices started flowing when I saw the weekly tally, lol!! But I had better just stick to my program which will have me at just 7.5 hrs for the week.

Fun news: I ordered a sweet tri suit and some race shoes yesterday! I figured I was getting close to actually competing in some races and had better train in race gear a few times beforehand.

Lauren Fleshman, per usual, spoke out about the USATF commercial and the Nike sponsorship monopoly in the sport: http://asklaurenfleshman.com/2015/02/usatf-yourwelcome-commercial-the-problem/

Brenda Martinez responded.

http://instagram.com/p/ysWM78yd8M/?modal=true

Then Nick Symmonds called her response cute but myopitc  in the comments portion.

Many more responses, including a comment/reply between those two. Interesting vibes. L-"I do not expect everyone to agree or want to take a leadership role." and B- "I'm aware of what is going on, I'm just choosing not to be a part of it...and I don't need people attacking me for your article."

I am curious about a statement L made about big sponsors. "15 years ago it was Adidas...10 years ago Reebok, and now they're gone. New companies come and flee."  I'm assuming she mean Nike pushes them out, and not that she's fighting the Nike monopoly, while saying history shows that companies come and go.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
