Master 2177 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Hope everyone had or is having a great race!!! I've done nothing for the past 3 days. A rest streak!! I actually packed my swimming gear. I'm gonna get a swim, by golly. I'm having asthmatic issues though. It may just be a short dip to warn my body of what's going back on the menu, and remind it how to do it. Hope you're all having super weekends! Edited by Blanda 2017-06-04 7:33 PM |

I just got home driving from Fla with no chance to follow. Hi all, the "Adam is running strong" bit didn't last very long. It was brutally hot and I had pushed harder on the bike than I probably should have. As the run went on, my goal went from finishing in 6:00 to improving on last year's 6:20 time to just finishing as mild nausea and cramping set in. I walked a lot of the last lap, but then again almost everyone I saw out there was walking the second lap as well. O n the upside, I did learn that ice stuffed down in some cooling sleeves really helped as did a cooling towel around the neck. I ended up finishing just a touch slower than last year's race. Happy to have survived though! |

I just got home driving from Fla with no chance to follow. Sorry, I couldn't stalk very well because the tracker for Raleigh was much delayed and that made me not trust the tracker for Victoria. Yesterday morning, I volunteered at an aid station on the bike course. When I got back from volunteering, I checked on Adam. The site listed him as DNS. I had lunch and checked again and they had him halfway through the run! Adam's results Swim: 55:03 Kirsten's results (4th in her age group!) Swim 00:40:48 The racer who I think is "our Barbara" Swim: 43:26 |

I think that it was actually hotter out last year but this year it seemed to affect the cyclists a lot more. I worked the middle aid station on the bike course which was located roughly halfway through the bike. We had several racers just stop and sit down for a while and we had more than over a dozen people kinda take a break. I think that riders were getting way behind on their hydration. |

Master 4452 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Congrats to Adam and Barbara! Hope the bike races went well and good on you Stacey for getting it done despite being under the weather!I had a great day; my goal for this race was to go hard on the bike. It is a fast course and I was hoping to hit 3 hours for my bike split. That meant being comfortably uncomfortable the whole way--I also wanted to know what I was capable of on the run after biking like that. It was super windy and the bike course was a bit long so I am ecstatic with my results. First sub-6! I'll try to get a race report done for this one.... Edited by IronOx 2017-06-05 9:37 AM |

436 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed Congrats on the successful races everyone! I guess we're in the thick of race season. Seems like (almost) everyone on here is kicking and taking names. Quick question for those of you that do most of your bike training on a trainer (like me). What, if anything, do you do to your bike after you ride? I ride in my garage (in TX) which tends to get very hot and although I have a fan on while I ride, most of the time when I'm finished it looks like someone took a super soaker to me, my bike and the floor. I normally keep my fan pointed at my bike for at least an hour after I finish to help it dry off but doing a thorough cleaning after every ride just isn't in the cards. After all, I ride indoors to save time....not for the scenery. |

What I should do (and been meaning to), is get one of the sweat catcher attachments and give the bike a quick wipe down after. Not necessarily everywhere on the bike, but maybe around the headset & stem as these have shown some corrosion or build up after a lot of sessions for me. The fan evaporates the water, but the salt is still left behind. |

At the minimum I usually put a small towel over the handlebar/stem area where screws could collect sweat while I'm riding, then when I'm finished riding, wipe off the rest of the bike as needed (with a different towel, of course!). 31 | Subject: RE: More Manatee Mayhem - 2017 Edition - Closed You got the right Barbara Victoria 70.3 is a beautiful race. Weather was perfect. A little warm at the end but overall I can't complain. 11pm the night before we left for Victoria I got a text from the Victoria Clipper saying they were taking a smaller boat and would need 30 people to give up their seats...panic! Fortunately we made it on the boat. Check in went smoothly and we were able to drive the bike course. They described it as rolling hills but if you life in a hilly area it is pretty flat up until the last 10 miles. Saturday was the Iron Kids race. I think that is my favorite part. My 5 year old was having trouble with the metric so she is convinced she ran 1.5miles instead of 1.5K She said at the end she really "picked it up a notch" and advised that I do the same tomorrow The swim is in a fairly shallow lake so it was one of the warmer swims. I didn't sight as well as I would have liked and got stuck in a few packs so my time wasn't as fast as it should have been. I was happy with the bike. Biking is my weakness and what I focused the most on. It was a beautiful course but none of it was closed to traffic. I had a few places where I had to slow down because I couldn't get past a car and cars definitely got too close for comfort. The run was a trail run around a lake. Very beautiful although I was nervous running on a trail with such tired legs. There were quite a few rocks and roots. My friend fell and gashed her knee and I saw quite a few other people take falls. I under trained for the run and it shows but I did keep my pace steady rather than dying at the end. Already thinking about what to do next. I think I may try to get an Oly in July or August. Thanks everyone for all the well wishes! Barbara |

I know what you mean about the run--I found the contrast of light and shadow made it difficult to judge depth for the rocks and roots and also saw numerous people trip in past years. Glad you were happy with the bike. One of my issues with this race is what you mentioned about traffic. Personally, I think that this bike course is dangerous for this reason. Good job on staying safe! |
