That is interesting. Woodlands has been a troubled spot for the last couple years. Galveston could be a good answer (and drive-able for me )

I had planned to do my first tri of the year tomorrow but I just can't run yet.  They have a great kids race though so I'm going to take my son and make it all about his race for a change.  He has big feet for a ten year old so I told him he could wear my bright yellow Zoot shoes and he is pretty excited about that.  He has caught the gear bug early.

thats great. My son is gearing up for his first Tri in August. He is riding his moms hardtail MTB with slicks which should be alright for a first race. His swimming is quite good and he can run so I am hoping he has a good time. I thought about racing as well but I think I might stay on the sidelines and let it be his day.

Steve - sorry to hear you're not able to do the race, but very cool that your son is into it and it will be his day. My 6 year old has been asking about a race for him so I've been checking it out. He may make his debut on labor day weekend. Nice thing is they have the kids race the day before the adults race so I can cheer him on and not have to skip the race myself.

Saw that about the Galveston bid. If they get it I hope they keep the 70.3. I really liked that race and plan to stick to 70.3s for awhile so don't want it going anywhere.

Justin - thanks, I'll be on my CAAD10.

Seeing a number of "go racers ... and Sean". Ha!

How would the time gaps between full and half be? Other places are doing (or have done) both, like Chattanooga, Boulder, CdA, Muskoka. Texas may have a more limited window?

Originally posted by marysia83 Guys, can you put me down to the Earth (or whatever the English expression is...) or just simply tell me if I'm being insane or reasonable: I found this event that sounds like a very fun ride. Basically, women's bike ride across two states, there are two options: 157 km or 102 km. Details here: https://pages.rapha.cc/womens100-rides/rapha-womens-100-chicago-2The longest I've ever done was 25 miles. The event is in 10 days and now that I don't have kids (they're on vacation in Poland) I can ride any day, any distance. Still - 25 miles to 63 miles (102 km option) sounds like a huge jump. The other thing is, they posted an average ride pace 17-19 mph. My best time in the race was almost 18, this year's races were under 17, so far I am around 17 (depending on traffic). But that's, once again, with a smaller distance. Is it possible to train to 60 miles within 10 days? I do not want to fail miserably and won't do it if you tell me don't - I rely completely on your knowledge and experience. Obviously, I can always do it next year. But I just thought I would gather your comments/opinions

I nearly signed up when I saw 2 donut shops! However, I decided against it.

What was stated is that it is targeted to "intermediate-level cyclist, comfortable riding safely in groups." I'm not sure how much group riding you have done in the 150 or so miles logged in the past 5 or 6 weeks. If it were just you alone, I'd say do it, as it would test you, push you, etc. Heck, my largest single day of training was about 70 miles for my century ride, so if you are comfortable on the bike for 3+ hours, than why not. HOWEVER, the group and intermediate-level aspects made me pause a moment and reconsider. I would probably look at it for next year, since it appears to be an annual event. Also, it might come in handy as your triathlon goals evolve. It could be a long training ride for you next year, built into a plan. I'm not saying that a long race is on the calendar for you next year, but I could see that happening.

Think there are a number of good things being brought up to think about. And can also show the value of looking at the facebook groups. The feeling I'm getting is that the intermediate skill and speeds can be toned down a bit. Think more trying to keep it above people just learning to ride a bike as opposed to needed to Cat up (like Sean is trying). Getting through a couple crowded triathlons with a decent sense of what's going on around you could be enough. It's still a long ways to go. And they probably would like at least some experience in pacing off others in proximity even though I don't think it'll be a regimented paceline. Think greenways may seem tighter than roads when in a group. I don't know the ones down there, but the ones out by me can get clogged up for a sec with just a few people.

Thanks for so much very good feedback on the 100-ride. It is obviously way too much for my current level. Always something to look after and train for for the next year

okay not usually one to write product reviews but this one just saved my bacon.

Loksak smartphone bag - basically think of it as a thicker double zip lock bag for your phone. I just got caught in a torrential downpour and because I had my phone in this bag it saved it from getting wet. They arent cheap as far as sandwich bags go but a lot cheaper than a new phone. Now that I have had a shower, updated strava and BT the sun is back out . Grrrr!

Go Manatees!

Go racers! Have a blast and smile for those cameras! I'm racing as part of a relay. I'm doing the swim and hoping to go around 28 minutes for the 1,500. It will be tons of fun!

Welcome, Anne!

Wet and stormy here too. I feel sorry for the Trials athletes, sliding around in the rain. Hayward Field has never had good drainage, even back in my day. Feel like taking the approach of your dogs, but I have two runs and a trainer ride on tap for today. Something tells me I'm going to be getting very wet! Good luck, racers!

Anyone following the TdF this year? I like the looks of BMC(I love me an underdog), but Sky is gonna be tough to beat.

Predictions?

That's a lot of dog!  Must be something in the air, Gunnar didn't want to get up for the walk I take him on before I head out for a long morning of running and SBUXing and eating!!  Good thing I have a doggie door!!

I predict whichever rider has the best motor hidden in his bike   Ok, I may have only watched a few minutes of it , so I'm just going with Yates since he has the same last name as my BIL.

I'm watching but I'm a few days behind. I'm mid stage 3. Don't want to be a spoiler so I'll stay general... I like TeeJay but wouldn't be upset if Froome won again. One of these years, though, Quintana is going to take it.

Speaking of Le Tour, I'm in the middle of prepping-for-tour madness. ONE DAY (today is already Sunday here) then I leave on Monday. No way am I gonna be ready to go! I have to go super light since I'll be schlepping my own stuff on and off trains and buses (and down streets and through those giant European train stations), and that includes a bike.

For at least 8 weeks in Europe (may be extended) and at least 1 Ironman (maybe 2, maybe another half), I am taking my bike in its wheeled bag, and everything else fits in one rolling backpack (carry-on size) and one normal-sized carry backpack.

I realize I'm gonna find myself in the middle of Europe with no underwear, but that always happens anyway. I always forget to pack underwear and something to sleep in. (I didn't buy any during last year's 8-week Eurotrip either! Kingsley still shakes his head and mutters, 8 weeks without underwear) ... isn't that what tri shorts are for? And commando decreases risk of saddle sores and helps 'em heal better :D

You can do it! A few years ago I made it through five weeks in Europe with one TYR transition backpack and a small collapsible daypack. It was a bike tour (we rented bikes) so that included bike clothes, a couple of dresses for apres-bike, one running outfit, and even my shortie wetsuit. Just get some laundry soap once you get there and wash as you go!

They definitely made the correct decision. While the fire is no where near me, it's already burned a few homes. All the EMS crews who were supposed to be working the race were called to work the fire instead. I just wish I wouldn't have gone to bed at 8:30 and set my alarm for 4 am. They called the race at about 9 pm last night - I could have slept in!

Did one run this morning. I need to see what the air quality is going to be like for my second run this afternoon. Oh, and it's already 94 degrees here at our house and it's not even 11 am!

Mel and I had a great time at Rev 3 this weekend.  Shenanigans ensued, as well as a new official Manatee greeting.

We figured that it would be highly inappropriate to do as all our collective pets do by sniffing butts....so we decided to pop a squat in greeting.

Had a good race today.  I am happy with all three legs.  Not a PR, but solid.  Somebody needs to tell the RD that a hill to the finish (well, not really a hill, a ramp with a couple of switchbacks up to the Olympic plaza) is not nice!    Weather was awesome after the downpour that happened yesterday as we racked our bikes! I am now looking forward to not training for a bit, or at least unstructured, only if I feel like it training.

Hope everyone has had a good weekend!

I finally ran a race this year. Just a small local 5 k with just 112 runners. I was 22nd overall, my time was a little slow. But get this, I am in my first year of the 50 year old age and ended up in fourth place. There were 3 guys in my age group with a sub 20 minute 5k. I was shocked. I would have podiumed in any other age group. My 82 year old Dad had sage advice. He said "next time you should run faster." Thanks Dad.

The running aspect of an Ironman triathlon is a marathon. Most people take on a marathon as a single event and the training for this uses up a lot of their time. Here are some tips for the run.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
