But while we are talking nutrition I would also like some help. I have recently stopped eating sugar and flour and so now I'm trying to work out nutrition for my up coming HM and Marathon. If you have any ideas I would love to hear them. When I use Gu I normally need to start at about the 10k mark and have one every 45 minutes or so. Oh and no run for me on Saturday night as my dad was in town and we went out for dinner. Hmm, for a HM i usually stick with water. I haven't run a marathon in a long time, but when i did I started to use starbursts and mini tootsie rolls. Wouldn't work for me now as I became a vegetarian since the last marathon and starburst (and all of those type of consistency candies) are made with gelatin which means animals! See my post above about UCAN, it may work for your no sugar needs as it has 0 sugar (though it is a carb...)ucann |

And he said he wants me to consider Mountains to Main Street as my spring HIM distance in preparation for IM-LOU in the fall. My heart hurts a little at the thought... Friends I know did that race this year and yeah, I think it was hilly. |

I've been watching sugar (not cutting out, just cutting down to prevent sugar spikes and blood sugar swings) and for training/racing I've been using Nuun electrolyte tablets and V-Fuel gels. They both use a more natural sugar than some of the other products out there. |

436 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by awm007 Hi Manatees. I did my first long bike of the season (4 hours - long for me!) and I could use some nutritional advice. During the ride, I felt my energy was pretty good and I even had some PRs for some Strava segments. However, by the end, I felt nauseous and felt like I was sick of drinking/eating sugar. I did a quick run after that was pretty miserable given my upset stomach. During the 4 hours, I took in a bottle of EFS (gel-like stuff) and 3 bottles of Gatorade plus water. I would estimate around 60 oz of liquid total and I did the math and I had around 800 calories, 200g carbs, 146g of sugar, 1100mg sodium, and 500mg potassium. Hourly, that would be about 200 calories, 50g carbs, 275mg sodium. I was wondering if there are obvious changes I could make or, failing that if you all could share your HIM nutrition plan? TIA Hey Adam (and everyone else)! I see you've gotten some great suggestions already so I'll make my $0.02 short. I'm a big fan of EFS myself but I find for anything 3+ hrs it's more of a supplement than a main fuel source. I've started using Infinit, which is what I used in my HIM, as I find it's got more calories and seems to be a better long distance fuel source. I struggle with solids on the bike so if you're like me, I'd say experiment with some different fuel sources perhaps with more calories (everything else seems pretty spot on). Personally I shoot for around 300 cals/hr on the bike. In the event it's helpful I'm 5'10 and weight about 175. From talking to people much more knowledgeable than I am about this stuff I've come to believe everyone is unique in terms of what they need. Hope everyone had a great weekend/raced well! I have a Fantasy Football draft tonight and have no idea what's going on yet! Anyone else play/follow? |

TIA Thanks Robin, Kirsten, Karen, Stacey, Ann-Marie, Melanie, and Justin (and any others I may have missed). This is extremely useful. It sounds like there is a lot of variance regarding what works for people. I think I'll start by giving solid food another try. I used to do some PB&J on the bike (Uncrustables are so delicious a couple of hours in) but moved away from it because I was reading things suggesting sticking mostly to liquids for easier digestion. I'll definitely give some solids of various types a try. I really appreciate the specific brand/types of food suggestions. I'll also try a modest increase in calories and play around with some different fuel sources as well. I really appreciate all of the suggestions here. Luckily (I guess - having many long sessions to go doesn't feel very "lucky") my race isn't until mid-Oct, so I'll have a few more of these long sessions to play around with nutrition. Thanks again and if anyone else has any recommendations, please send them along! |

Thanks again and if anyone else has any recommendations, please send them along! My digestive system is a big proponent of liquid only, which just goes to show we are all so different. I'm a huge fan of Infinit Nutrition - my custom mix is 250 calories per hour, and it is right on the money in terms of keeping hunger at bay, yet super easy for me to drink. I will sometimes throw in something to "chew" for variety (like Sports Beans or a Honey Stinger waffle), but for my last two or three long rides (94 miles Saturday), I've done it on all liquid nutrition and it was 100% ideal for me. Experimenting is really the only way to answer the question for yourself! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Wow--"Andreas" has a twin separated at birth. (Maybe that is his brother Michael?!) My Andreas is named after one of the Raelert brothers, hot triathlete brothers from Germany who have been pretty high up at Kona (I think Andreas was in the top 3 a couple times); not so much in the past few years since Frodeno and company began to dominate. I had a pinup of them in my "bike room" in Saigon. I used to joke that I would only do a full IM if I could use Andreas Raelert as personal pace duty on the bike, and be served a pizza in Special Needs. Figured that since this bike is intended for my first full IM, what better thing to do but RIDE Andreas?! |

My bikes name is Andreas too, cause you know when you ride something hot and sexy that often it damn well better have a name Unfortunately mine hasn't been ridden for a long time as I have just been running. He is now suspended from the ceiling in the garage cause there isn't room for him inside. Edited by StaceyK 2018-08-27 5:26 PM |

Split transition in a "you can't really get there from here" kind of way. Nice run though. |

436 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Nice bike! Did you get a professional fit done or test any other bikes before going with the P2? Looks like you got some cool "accessories" to go with it. New bike day is always a great day! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Yes to the pro fit. No, actually I didn't test any other bikes this time. I have been riding a 2010 P2 for the past 5 years. Bought it secondhand in Vietnam. I was focused on Cervelo because I had some components (seat, cranks) I wanted to switch to the new bike if possible. Would have considered other models, but the fitter said the Cervelo P series is a good fit for me. I had tried out a P5 in Vietnam thinking to maybe buy one here, but aside from the price being higher than I wanted to pay, it didn't seem that stable--handling was very twitchy. I am not very big and my races tend to be in windy places, so that is a consideration with some of the high-end bikes. The fitter felt that P2 was a really good match for me fit-wise; my issue with the old model was not the bike's height but its reach. (I have long arms for my height and was feeling really squished up on my old bike. Just didn't think I'd be happy on it for full IM, plus it was compromising my "aero-ness" to some degree. A bigger size bike would solve the reach issue, but require some pretty marginal settings with stem and seat to get the height dialed in, as I'm not quite tall enough to warrant the move up.) The 2010 model's aerobars had very little room for adjustment. This is not the case with the newer models. Most of the "accessories" are from my previous bike, Rover. Only the aero bottle setup is new. (My old one ejected twice in races, once nearly causing a crash behind me, the mount completely self-destructed on a rough stretch at Calgary, and I threw the bottle at a discard station.) Hopefully this one will do a better job of staying attached to the bike! |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED "Andreas" is actually a very dark midnight blue with red and white accents. Definitely a nice Euro type look. A navy or black bike is much more my style--I have a ton of black dresses and most of my race stuff is some combo of black and red or hot pink. It does say, "Simply Faster" on his top tube. (I didn't notice that till setting up the picture.) Hope that is the case! Edited by Hot Runner 2018-08-28 2:27 PM |

They say race morning set up with the split transitions sucks and the bike is brutal. Other than that, no other negative feedback. I may just do Chattanooga instead though M2M would be much closer and much, much cheaper. |

Another advantage of the darker color is that it will show less grime. The white version shows every little bit of road grime and chain grease. Even after I wash it, the part of the frame hidden by the front cogs always looks bad. |

Expert 2811 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Next weekend is our local triathlon, as some of you know the city has me act as a liaison for the event. I make sure the City, the company that owns the event and the local businesses are talking and getting the same message. One of the things I also do is help coordinate volunteers, because I know everyone (not hard in a town with a population of 10,000 in the summer). One of my volunteer pools is people who are on probation, parole, drug court and jail trustees. A healthy, drug free (without the threat of jail or actual incarceration) lifestyle in a novel thing for a lot of them, or all of them. Many of them are very talented at saying the proper names of drugs, their uses, and their classification. I just spoke to a lady who is going to do her community service hours at the triathlon. I struggled with the conversation, because she kept calling it the "triptathon." I gently tried to correct her without being rude, but she wouldn't be dissuaded, so I just let her go on. I don't think she is that far off, if you look at it as a combination of antidepressant and athletic event. Your new word for today is: "Triptathon" the combination of athletic event and antidepressant. |
