The moans were bad enough--but it didn't look as if anyone even stopped to help the cyclist....Horrible!Originally posted by JJ- Hey guys I know I haven't been around much lately. A few days ago a cyclist was hit by a car 1.5 miles from my house. Our local police chief is defending the driver stating it was unknown just how close to the white line the cyclist was riding and that the driver never saw him. He also said he wants to make sure everyone understands that the motorist did not hit the bike. It was the cyclist that was hit.............. Here in the video you can clearly see the truck swerve over onto the shoulder as he was hit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvs3xrO9_gw&feature=youtu.beI hope this goes viral. I'm tired of getting buzzed by cars in this town. Mark suffered 4-5 broken ribs, a broken scapula and a 60-70 % collapsed lung and has a gash on the back of his head, with staples. I am actually nauseated watching that (and can't get his survival moans out of my head). Ugh ugh ugh! A soccer mom (she actually had a soccer sticker on her Range Rover, so that's real, not a dig) tried to run me off the road yesterday. I was as close to the curb as I could get without striking my pedal, and was going uphill (sloooooowly). She was apparently pissed that anyone would be out on her road, honked and missed my head with her mirror by about 4 inches. I gave her the customary Mass-hole salute after that and almost caught up with her and her adult male passenger on the next downhill… She was trying hard to avoid that, as I suspect she didn't mean to come THAT close - just to send a little message (like that's OK, right?). People can really suck, sometimes. I'm glad that dude is OK, more or less, although it should NEVER have happened. (and I selfishly hope that Austin drivers are within the LA bubble and cut some slack - or I'll be on a trainer for the next few years) Matt This makes me sick too. Giving the video a hit, hope it keeps spreading on. Is there any kind of positive action we can take? Is there a public petition of any kind? One of the tragedies this week was that a good friend of my sister's and mine, we went to school together and stayed friends all these years, he is an avid cyclist and sometimes triathlete in Singapore. He was hit and killed by a taxi driver he has a wife and young child. Singapore is HORRIBLE for cycling. Mostly they go to Malaysia, but there are a brave few. The taxi driver (who was clearly in the wrong according to witnesses) will be fined. That's the extent of the law there, and the drivers are PSYCHO. So odd in what's essentially a fascist state where you can be caned for spitting out chewing gum or spray painting. The other tragedy is that another friend of ours, an Indonesian student on his way home, was on Malaysian Air 17. Many of our friends had friends or colleagues on the flight as both Tina and I have stayed close to the global AIDS community (not the Indonesian student though) -- several dozen people on board were on their way to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne (it's the premier world AIDS gathering with many notable world leaders and dignitaries scheduled to present). They included top researchers, leaders, and fundraisers. Rest in peace. I'm still in shock about both. |

(((Big hugs))) and lots of loving thoughts to you and your sister, and peace to your friends and their families. I didn't watch that video earlier because I was at a conference and didn't think it'd be a good idea to watch it around other people. Just did and O.M.G. Sickening and scary as hell. DH was hit by someone's side mirror a few weeks ago when we were riding to work together on Bike to Work Day. I was behind him and saw that it was going to happen. It absolutely scared the crap out of me and he didn't even fall off his bike. Jonathan--and everyone else--please please please ride safely, to the extent you can. With idiots like that and the Singapore cabbie out there, who needs enemies?! |

Member 2689 Denver, CO | Subject: RE: Manatee Monkey Mentors SHUT (Poptart or pet pic bribes considered) For those of you with Garmin 310TX's, have you had problems with incorrect distance on the swim? I just did an OWS that was supposed to be 750 yds. Yes, I was swerving all over the place (map looked like a Christmas tree!!), but my Garmin said I went 1,689 yds. and did a 1:18 100. While that time/distance would be nice, I know it can't possibly be right, even though I was wearing a wetsuit. Was it because I was wearing it on my wrist so there was extra distance from my strokes? Should I be wearing it under my swim cap instead? |
