That's awesome!  Grats.  I wish I could sustain that many w/kg!

Happy Monday Manatees!  I had a fun race this weekend.  For those with nothing better to do, here's my always long race report

Hey, manatees!  Congrats to all our racers, hope everyone is feeling good post race(s).

My hockey team lost in the semi-finals 5-4 in a shootout on Saturday, so our season is now over.  We'll do some tournaments over the summer (or at least 1), but sadly hockey is over for the season.

Awesome! Funny that you struggle on the bike. Well, I mean, not funny but you know what I mean. We seem to have similar build. You may be taller than I. I have to work really hard to get strong and make muscular gains and I did not enjoy hard workouts on the bike (IE I did not work hard at getting better on the bike) but I thought run fitness translated really well and carried me. I wonder why it doesn't for you?

Regardless, that is even more impressive. And exciting!

Awwww. Well, an exciting way to finish it sounds. I love/hate shootouts! I'll bet as a goalie you aren't overly fond.

We are going to do a 10k together on 3rd April, I need to get training so I don't die!

The new season will start in October with practices starting in September.  We usually do at least one tournament over the summer, which this year I will use to debut my new pads!  I'm finally retiring my 15 year old pads (and glove and blocker) for newer, lighter, not-falling-apart, less stinky new gear!

Adrienne - I love shootouts in practice.  Playoff situations: not so much.  I was so nervous and got more nervous with each skater.  It didn't help that we had a 'big' (for us) audience of regular fans but also the (teen) boys of the USA Hockey Atlantic District Championships who were standing at the glass behind me yelling things, mostly supportive, but it was a little bit distracting.  It also didn't help that someone, a ref I guess, decided we didn't have enough time for overtime so the game went straight to a shootout.

There is a trend of running and cycling going together, but they don't always go exactly. I've seen some things like that too. I was quite a bit faster than my brother on the bike in multiple ways even though I was only a little faster running. The power to weight here would suggest that the fitness may translate well. I think that would end up around 3.7 W/kg at FTP (vs 20 min test). So the questions coming in would be about the accuracy of the power data and the amount of resistance seen. I thought you two might be a bit different in build as Karen was a least a few inches taller (5'7" or more)? You might also duck or tuck in better, and also maintain power better in such a position. It can change the burn and come up in some new areas. I'm actually a few inches taller than my brother, but I fold up better and tighter than he does.

I also "fold" pretty well, but I think a couple of things come into play here--body build (I'm 5'7" and change, not short and muscular but tall and thin, really small frame, much more like an elite runner than a triathlete) and probably muscle type--ANYTHING to do with strength/power/speed over the short term has always been a struggle in any sport. Very much an endurance animal. Plus I think just lack of experience. I've been running and swimming since I was ten. Have only been biking (in a training or competitive sense) for about five years, and only used aerobars for 2-3 of those. I still don't think I use what strength I do have very efficiently on the bike. Still tweaking with bike fit, technique, etc. I think generating that kind of power in aero on a road would be tough!

Data should be reasonably accurate. It's a Power2Max meter. My last test was 195. Have done it with other setups (Computrainer) in the past and seen a gradual increase from about 160 through 180, 190, and then these last two tests with my own PM. Not sure about resistance--probably typical of the gears I would ride in a sprint. Normally my cadence would be closer to 88-90 than the 96 on the test, but then I normally am riding longer than 20 minutes! I do think I'm pretty good at pacing a 20-minute max effort at current fitness. I've run A LOT of 5K's in my time (distance for HS and college XC, plus track), and the FTP test bears a distinct resemblance to that level of effort.

Yeah, her being taller and thinner might also be a  factor but I thought for sure a simple big aerobic base would translate no matter that, which was kind of my point.  I don't think I fold well at all, or even have good position on the bike or desire to train well lol.

I've got a teammate who swam AND ran in college. You'd think with my theory of aerobic base she'd be an animal in triathlon but similar to you, she only just learned how to ride a bike and is definitely limited by her biking placement.

Just hypothesizing though, I certainly have no clue.

Also, as long as we are getting into nitty-gritty I have disproportionately long legs and a short torso. I imagine that's a good thing in biking from power and positioning. BUT my original comment was more a generalization of being a small person who's not particularly strong that has a good aerobic base translating to decent bike times without getting into the other details (which I realize are important too, especially on the bike.)

The question came up in another non-BT group I am in. What is the minimum amount of time you should take, if you want to do an HIM followed by an IM. I am doing a local HIM in September and then One month and one day later, I am doing IM Louisville. What does the group think? The opinions are all over the place in the other group.

Maybe, to some extent at least. The aerobic base can be rather sport specific though. The cardiovascular can be rather strong as that's the heart's ability to pump out, but then the muscles still have to metabolize the fuel. And that's where it becomes more specific. Others at masters were collegiate swimmers and I would just run circles around them. Some aren't quite at an hour for a 10k race. Nowhere close to a collegiate runner. Something else could be efficiency, or rather economy for running. I wonder if someone with better running economy is not going to see this translate as well to the bike. Karen has also pointed out that she's not quite at the same fitness level in either swimming or running now as back in the day. The learned swim stroke and run form that's been ingrained can stay with someone and still help later on.

I've seen it happen elsewhere too where some top athletes can figure it out, but others don't. Melissa Hauschildt (Rollison) was a 3k runner that picked up the bike the second she got on. Kelly Williamson was a collegiate swimmer and runner, but could never quite figure it out. Always losing 10-15 minutes in a HIM. Both have top 3 finishes at 70.3 Worlds with Hauschildt winning some. Of course then in the other direction is a guy like Starykowicz who looks awful running, but can occasionally bulldozer his way to break 6:00 miles in the HIM run. He just has that much power to work with.

Find a mentor. Make a list of at least three people that you could approach for help, list your specific needs and then be courageous enough to begin asking.
