Hey all, well a lot of things have been happening up here. I think Curtis asked about the snow we got last week here in Laramie.. at my house we measured about 8" of really wet and heavy snow. So much snow that city wide trees were losing branches. Our large tree in front of the house lost a lot from the top of the tree. In fact I had to move my car that is usually parked out front because we were afraid a branch would fall on it.

As for the training front, last week I had a schedule doctor appointment. We discussed the opening of pools, specifically the pool in my city. We discussed the precautions being taken at the pool, the things that I need to do, etc. She gave me the green light to head back to the pool. So I have a lane reservation for tomorrow afternoon/evening. This is going to be a tough swim, as I have been out for so long!

--Tom

Congratulations on getting a lane reservation!!

Was gonna say, what's the trick with that??? I guess when the next sign-up comes I will try to see if I can have part of it filled in before the sign-up window opens. I think that is possible with IM races? Then you just have to click submit when the time starts? Not sure their site allows that--I tried once before it opened and it was not letting me, but maybe it was just an issue with my computer. I also wasted maybe a minute running to get my credit card when I realized we had to pre-pay (for the slots we didn't get. I was charged twice, and then refunded for all but the one I got). Maybe without wasting that time I could snag a few more slots. Beyond that, I really don't know. It is kind of convoluted process that involves signing two different waivers using the computer mouse (can't type) and entering a bunch of health, contact, and credit card info.

Have given up on the pool for the next three weeks (I have a total of one slot before July 4) and am trying to find a potential swim buddy for lakes, or maybe hire a friend's kid to do some kayak escorting for me.

OH man yeah I remember when IM sign-ups were contingent on you being on the site well before they made the page live, and having your information already completed - pretty sure those days are over

I've gotten back in the pool twice now since my gym re-opened. Friday it felt crowded (eight people in a six-lane pool) but last night it was slower, anywhere from me being the only one to two other people during my workout. The only thing I don't love is since the locker rooms and showers are closed, I can't wet my hair before getting in or rinse after getting out - which might take a toll on my hair, but I'm just glad I'm back in the pool.

Last night I completed the goal I've been working on.  Back in mid-March I got the idea to run all the alleys in my home town.  This quickly evolved to running all the streets and alleys in the borough since one would have to take streets to get to the alleys.  Armed with Strava Heatmap, a borough map (surprisingly not as thorough as the other two sources but at least I knew the boundaries), and MapMyRun, I finally covered all the ground minus a maybe .5 mile section of street that went into/through a retirement home section that requested no outside pedestrians or cyclists because of COVID.  I have no idea how many miles total this endeavor involved but I might try to figure it out.  There is a lot of backtracking involved.

Let me tell you, it was a lot of fun.  As I drive some of the streets, I remember the run for that area/day.  It was a treat getting to areas of town I'd never been to or not been to in ages and getting to see some of the things that make my town unique and special.  It was a great way to stay active and distracted from the madness going on in the world.  Every single street, alley, little dead end = run.

That sounds fun! Our town has a ton of little back lanes and alleys and I haven't run many of them since college, particularly in an older neighborhood that's right next to mine, and the area near campus. I think they are old rural lanes that pre-date our street system. Most are dirt or gravel. Should try that again sometime. My mom used to enjoy sneaking away down an alley when my dad wasn't paying attention when they were walking, then re-appearing ahead of him in the next block!

I'm glad to here that your pool experience has been good so far. Fingers crossed that they keep up the standards.

I like your mom's sense of humor!  Yup, my town is pretty old and some of the alleys are in rough shape and not all are paved.  I was totally convinced I'd trip or stumble on the cracked and heaving blacktop of some of them!

And another episode in the continuing saga of our town's pool re-opening....Today I got a call from the poor soul whose job it was to clean up the sign-up mess and she said actually I should have gotten 2 more slots. Apparently the site crashed as I was registering due to the large numbers of people trying to sign up at once, but the names and order of everyone who had filled out the form by that point got recorded. So she was going back in and contacting people by phone in order that they were recorded. OMG. Anyway, I can now do a pool swim on June 22, June 30, and July 2. Still going to try to make it out to the lake tomorrow for a go at OWS with the wetsuit.

That sounds like at least some progress. I hope that the OWS goes well and gets you ready for your pool swim on Monday.

Wow that poor person! Glad you're getting some slots though!
My sister got a frantic email yesterday that TWO employees at her pool have tested positive for COVID, so they're now shut down. She's in Florida and as a state, they set a crazy all-time high record of positive cases Wednesday (3,200 overnight).

Soak it in the tub ASAP! Leave it in for a good long time too.

I'm sure that I've said this here before but ... Kevin used to whitewater kayak and they use neoprene spray skirts. Before the first session of the year, he'd have to soak the spray skirt to get it to fit on the boat. Neoprene definitely shrinks as it dries out.

Oh, interesting.

I remember when I bought and tried my wetsuit I was unable to breath, it felt so tight... Then I figured I was not putting it on properly, and when I actually do it the correct way, it seemed even too big... that's probably won't be the case for you, Karen, as you are experienced in putting it on, but just a reminder to do a milimeter at a time

The best one was my friend and his very first try... Everything fit almost perfectly, he complained it was a bit too uncomfortable for his throat, and he could not figure out why there is a string hanging in front of him, from the zipper..... After he told us the story we realized he put it on wrong way, back-front....

I am sorry for all the hassle with the reservations. That must be super frustrating - for both, swimmers and staff. Fingers crossed for any open water opportunities.
