There are seriously a whole lotta port-o-pots there (unlike Lou!) but there are still very long lines to use them. Bring a towel to sit on/save your place in the swim line. I'm just bringing a hand towel but bring something so you can find your spot again. My morning plan is: Drop of stuff to add to my transition bags, check bike and add water bottles, etc., use bathrooms in transition, get on bus, get swim start in line, use bathrooms at swim start (at least once). Yes, my stomach/GI system has been know to get the heebie-jeebies before some events. |

Or do your line neighbors move your towel with them?? No, it doesn't move. It's kinda like Lou was in that way. Transition opens at 4:30. The pro swimmers go at 7:20 or so. Sometime before the pro start, the line kinda starts to creep forward so maybe 7:00 or 7:10? Everyone stands up and puts on their swim skin. Family members are allowed at the start and they are pulled out of the line. Anyway, you are in line for a good while with it not moving. Once the line starts, it goes fairly quickly. As you approach the dock (there is just one dock for Choo but they start 2-3 people at at time), there is a place to drop your morning bag after the sidewalk ends but before the dock. I don't recall if it was drop off by race number but I imagine it is. |

My husband happened to be going to Ottawa for work over this past weekend and then i saw the Army Run was the same weekend. There were slots open so i signed up for one and went to Ottawa for the weekend sans kids (they were cared for - by my mom and sister) - did the race with lowered expectations but i had a great run! It's a great race for those who might interested in a destination race. I highly recommend! Congratulations on a great run, those are to be savored and cherished! |

Champion 14677 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by glfprncs Originally posted by jmkizer Janyne, That's a tough question to answer simply because it's a local race to me, so the logistics of racing it are pretty simplistic. This is the 4th year I've done the race. Historically, this is one of the 'easiest' HIM races. Because of the river current, you can take about 20% off of your overall swim time. For 7 of the 10 years, the swim has been wetsuit legal. The three years it hasn't been wetsuit legal have been the last 3 years. The bike course is new this year (after 9 years on the old course) and only has about 1500 feet of elevation. That said, I found this course to be a bit harder than the old one because of a few things: 1. All of the climbing takes place in about a 20 mile stretch, 2. The first 5 miles involves 8 railroad crossings and 7 turns, 3. The route isn't nearly as pretty as the old route (it passes the industrial paper plant, the sewage plant, and the airport--which was kind of neat when a plane took off). The run is flat, flat, flat and has GREAT spectator support. Truly, there's about 1.5 miles where there aren't people cheering you on during the whole run. The one true challenge of the entire day is the potential for high heat. The last 3 years have seen temps in the 90s with high humidity. One thing I absolutely do NOT like about the race is that transition is 1.2 miles from swim start and 1.5 miles from the finish. This isn't a big deal in the morning...walking from transition to swim start is kind of a nice way to settle your mind. There are shuttle buses available, but I've never used them heading back to swim. The real issue is that after racing for 70.3 miles, once you cross the finish line, you have to go get your stuff...1.5 miles away. If your car is near the host hotel or the finish line, you have some options: Drive your car to within 0.4 miles of transition, walk in, get your stuff, and walk out. But finding a place to park at transition is difficult. Option #2 is to ride the shuttle bus from near the finish line to transition, get your stuff, and ride your bike back to your car. I have a friend who lives 6 blocks away from transition, so I park in her driveway on raceday morning. Yesterday afternoon, walking my bike back to her house wasn't fun. Originally posted by glfprncs Omg...the run today was SO hot! And I have a nice case of swamp butt from putting ice down my top and shorts (but boy did it feel good at the time). Congratulations! Would you do this one again? Would you recommend it? Nancy, I am sorry I didn't get to see you. My phone died and I couldn't track you. Here is my take from being a Sherpa: bring your own water and food. There was ZERO places to purchase anything. I mean NOTHING: no vendors, no stores, no restaurants near. I finally found one place about a mile past the finish line. and I am eternally glad that I brought my hydropack. It was great to watch my friend about 6 times on the run course and finish line, in addition to swim in, out and bike in, out. I cannot imagine doing that race. It was SOOOOOO hot. While watching the riders come in, (my friend was mid back of pack) about 1 in 10 had SEVERE cramping. I mean the full out screaming, not being able to move cramps. I caught bikes while people writhed on the ground. Just NO. |

Champion 14677 | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Originally posted by glfprncs I am glad you had a good race in spite of that evil, hades-like heatOriginally posted by melbo55 I had a solid swim and while my bike wasn't horribly speedy, I followed my FTP plan as coach prescribed. The run, though, was just horrid. I didn't get into the water until 8:45 a.m. (thank you to all of those people who seeded themselves early to beat the heat, and then backstroked or held onto buoys), so I didn't get off the bike until after noon. My legs felt okay, but I just got SO hot. At each aid station, I dumped ice down my shorts, into my tri top, and held ice in my hands. I could run until the ice melted...then I got SO hot again. I was pretty much done by mile 10. Post race, I was feeling pretty sick. I didn't throw up, but was pretty close. We had a medical emergency on the shuttle bus back to transition when another athlete passed out. A friend in my tri club was driving his car to transition post race to get his bike and passed out, hitting a parked car. I didn't feel well enough to eat until about 8:00 p.m. Need to figure out of my nausea was created by heat, dehydration, too much sugar, or the protein in my Infinit (or a combination of all of the above) Originally posted by glfprncs Omg...the run today was SO hot! Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Eeeeew, yikes! One in ten people screaming with cramps is not good. It sounds like even Vietnam 70.3 might be preferable (except in the porta-potty department--I think it must be the worst race on the IM circuit for people who gotta go....). And that is terrible about no food/drinks for spectators. It would definitely be a no-go for me with Mom in tow. Vietnam has a fairly considerably DNF rate each year, but relatively few people end up in the hospital or even the med tent, and among the finishers, even the BOP, you really don't see a lot of people in serious distress. There is quite a bit of walking, even with the MOP on the run, but that may be people doing planned walk/run or something. The first year when it was 104--and I don't mean heat index, 104 temps with 90%+ humidity-- it was a bit uglier. But I would still say it was not 1 in 10 in serious distress. Maybe people were more physically and mentally prepared for the conditions. You really do have to dial back the intensity, from Mile 1 of the bike, when things are crazy hot. That is hard for a lot of people to accept. Particularly tough for those racing for podium or Worlds slots--it is a bit like playing Russian roulette. |

Master 8249 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Manatees - 2018 Edition Now CLOSED Wanted to add, nice job Nancy on getting it done despite the ugly conditions. Feeling close to tossing one's cookies is pretty normal for that kind of heat. I think every year I've done Vietnam I've been in the same boat. A bit less this year, because my run fitness just wasn't there to really push the run, but I still felt miserably hot for most of the last half. It's a lot easier to keep on top of fluids and electrolytes than it is to cool down--with high humidity, after a certain point, it really just seems to be impossible. It's just a matter of controlling it so you don't become too woozy to finish. Pretty much any long workout in Vietnam was the same way--my coach was always after me to refuel sooner after long workouts to aid recovery, but I was never able to do it there with real food. Smoothies were pretty much the only way to get down calories/protein/carbs within an hour or two after long runs/rides/bricks. I got in the habit of ending long workouts at the smoothie place and then bringing it home; otherwise, it sometimes took me an hour or two to get up off the floor (under the AC). Just. Too. Hot. It's one aspect of living there I can't say I miss! |

I wasn't totally convinced that this was a good idea or why it even crossed my mind and I had no real great conviction to do it and as a result I failed on Tuesday (yes I'm that pathetic). The interesting thing is that it has now nagged at me all day today (Wednesday here) and I'm contemplating it again. 100 days would now take me to Thursday 3rd January which isn't as a significant date and so it kind of looses the appeal. But she talks a lot about the importance of getting started and how starting on a certain date can be a red herring. Maybe it's up your alley? I am in the midst of a totally random step streak with my garmin. I saw that they had a 30 day streak badge that i didn't have and then a 60-day one. I did a few sprints off and on throughout the last ten years, but the last three seasons really made a go of it with training and goals and more than one race a season. The last two years I ended with an Olympic distance, which left me pretty shattered. I started having some health problems last year that sidelined me quite a bit. Fainting, shortness of breath, numbness, all that jazz. Lots of doctors and tests later, and I landed with a diagnosis of vasovagal syncope and POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.) I've spent this season trying to learn how to manage my symptoms while still participating in a sport that I love. My last race of the season is this Saturday: Waterman's International Aqua Bike! Really looking forward to being an active Manatee again. Love you all so much. |

I REALLY have an issue with making starting/ending dates a big deal (start the diet on a Monday, do an Ironman by 40, etc) when really they just seem to set me up for failure. It doesn't matter so much about the date as the accomplishment If it will be a motivator to log it and see it happen then even if you don't quite make it you'll have accomplished something! :D But if you're not into it maybe there's another accomplishment. Have you read any of Gretchen Rubin? She has a great book about habits and a podcast that i really enjoy. But she talks a lot about the importance of getting started and how starting on a certain date can be a red herring. Maybe it's up your alley? I am in the midst of a totally random step streak with my garmin. I saw that they had a 30 day streak badge that i didn't have and then a 60-day one. Not sure why that was motivating but i am on Day 32 and it is kind of a tough day for me to get the steps but i was trying to figure out how best to get it today to keep my streak alive! dooo eettt! You can also download a watch face in The Garmin. Connetc store that has a count down clock and set it up to countdown to your 100 day. I use it to count down to Chattanooga, that’s how I know Sunday is going to be a very, very, very long day for me Gee, I just had Facebook remind me about Sunday ;-) |

There are seriously a whole lotta port-o-pots there (unlike Lou!) but there are still very long lines to use them. Bring a towel to sit on/save your place in the swim line. I'm just bringing a hand towel but bring something so you can find your spot again. My morning plan is: Drop of stuff to add to my transition bags, check bike and add water bottles, etc., use bathrooms in transition, get on bus, get swim start in line, use bathrooms at swim start (at least once). does the swim line not move while you are in line for porta potty? |
