Pre-race routine:

I set up my bag the night before and set the clock for a 4:45 wake-up. Had a dry bagel and a glass of water. Drove up to Sarasota, slipped in through downtown and grabbed parking in the empty lot. We were early enough that parking and prep were a breeze.
Event warmup:

I finished dressing in the van and walked over to the start area, used the porta potty, and stretched a bit. Handed off my sweatshirt to Ann and got in the corral. Moved as close to the 2:15 pace group as I could.

Comments:

I have done this race 3 times now and have finally figured a couple of things out. The bridge is early enough that it isn't a big deal, just keep the pace going. I wanted to stick around the 2:15 pace group for as long as I could. Success on that count. Early on I kept telling myself not to use up too much. Gel at miles 5 and 10. This is the first race I've made a plan on nutrition and it helped a lot. The first part is an out and back, so I could see the leader go by and ,WOW, he was moving quick. Then more front runners, then a couple of good sized groups. Saw a fellow in a wheelchair, what an inspiration. Saw Ann and Kelly (my sister) at mile 5. At mile 6 there is a bit of a cluster as there is water on the left, then the relay folks peel off to the right. No issue through there, although the high fiving mom that saw her kids with the signs kinda made me pause and smile. More moments like that in the next mile or so that made me think about how much I have changed/grown and how wonderful the running community is. In the past it is the neighborhood that slaps me and slows me down and I knew this year would be different. No walking, no slowing, just kept going. Fell in behind a pair of green and white checked shorts that had a great pace going. I stayed there for about 2 miles, until she turned it up a notch to head in to finish. I just kept steady into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

I had issues at 2 water tables, nearly running over checked shorts when she stopped at one. Really though, it was a well executed race on my part, I kept to the plan, had a number of folks in my mind to help when things got tough (thanks Manatees!), and had a very enjoyable race.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, drank water, and met Ann and Kelly. Wandered over to the beer garden and had the obligatory post race beer. I do believe that Mich Ultra may be the worst post race beverage possible, but it is cold and free, so how bad is it, really?

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm going to blame my mother and father for poor genetics. Ok, maybe that isn't it. I am pleased with this race, heck an 11 minute PR is nothing to sneeze at. But I do see room for improvement and I think that with some work and time, I'll continue to see improvements.

Event comments:

This race continues to improve and I hope to keep doing it. I might relay next year with Kelly, just to change things up.

Great race!  Congratulations again on the PR!

Mich Ultra -- who markets LOW CARB BEER to people who just ran over 13 miles?  Really?

An 11 minute PR is HUGE!!  Nice work!  And I'd have to agree on the Michelob Ultra....but at least it's beer

Nice job on the PR Chris!  11 minutes is awesome!  I must have been right in there with you for awhile.  I was wearing the green & white Mohawk.  I couldn't agree more that this is really becoming a great race.  As for the water stops, use your height to your advantage.  I stay to the outside and reach over the shorter runners, keeps me from running over someone that abruptly stops to drink.  And, yes, there were plenty of pace setters yesterday!

Great run Chris!  Agree on the Ultra thing, what's up with that?  After 13 miles I want to chase a chocolate milk with an ice cold calorie friggin' filled beer!  Keep up the good work and you are correct, 11 minute PR is nothing to sneeze at, that's forty something seconds per mile!

Chris - excellent race on Sunday - I love it when a plan comes together, as they say. Sounds like you knew exactly what you could do, and executed your plan perfectly - an 11 minute PR is HUGE!

Enjoy your day off from work today - you certainly earned it.

Awesome, awesome job, Chris!   Your consistent, patient training has definitely paid off, congrats on the PR!  Still chuckling about your green and white checkered pace booty, LOL!  I know this racing season will hold many good things for you.

Where are folks seeing the pictures from your race?  I see nothing.

No, no, no! There are a few things worse than Michelob Ultra:

Michelob Ultra>MGD 64 lemonade>Nothing

Great PR! I'm very happy you are seeing improvements, but of course not suprised! The area you were running looked beautiful.
