Subject: Is this a doubleline violation?

Not trying to throw this guy under the bus, but I was looking through the photo album of my race and came across this pic.  Is this a double line violation?  Setting the scene - the course makes a left hand turn into a closed road, but my assumption was that you follow the 'rules of the road' and would make the turn at the double line break and not cut the corner.  Is my assumption correct or can I shave a few seconds off my time and cut the corner?  Should the race organizers put up a cone on all left hand turns?  They did so at the first turn left hand turn coming off a closed road. But what if there isnt one?  Is it up to the judge or is there a specific rule?  I know there are a few RD and refs on this site so I am wondering what you think.

BTW, I dont know if he got penalized, but it doesnt look like the ref on the right hand side is checking his number.

Thanks

The USAT rule says "In no case shall a cyclist cross a solid yellow line indicating a no passing zone" but IMHO it would be a hard-a$$ed official who would invoke it on a turn like that.

Weird, I got the big red box too, I saw it when I first posted and when I looked at responses.  Trying again.

I agree with The Bear on this one.  Generally, the solid line violation is called when there is a "gasp" moment.  Meaning, when peoiple see the participant do it, they gasp at how dangerous it is.  This is a controlled turn, meaning someone controlling traffic, and there is clearly no traffic endangering the rider.  By strict reading and following - it may be a violation - but I don't think that anyone would call it, and if they did, I would think that the powers that be at USAT officiating would over-rule it if it was taken through the proper channels.

That would be one seriously weak violation call.

I would find it very hard to fathom why they would get penalized.  It is a corner situation and they are directing the rider that way.  Assuming they were to follow the "rule" then they would be turning bascially on top of the volunteer/cop directing them to turn left.

I would not call that rider for a centreline violation.

However, IMO I think a cone should have been on the centreline that would indicate to riders where the turn should be completed to remove all question.

If I got penalized for that I would quit triathlon and take up Jarts, which I hear are going to be in the next summer olympics.

Thanks all - Just a FYI, There was no animosity on my part to the rider who did cut the corner, (I didnt and wouldnt 'report' this) I just wanted to make sure I understand what I can and cant do for my next race.  This was in my first race and I was so concerned with the 'letter of the law' that I did wait until the yellow break, which screwed up my momentum, I had to slow down a bit to take a sharper corner and couldnt pedal through it.  Not that I lost all that much time, but it is easier, and less chance of a skid out, to take a corner at a 45 degree angle than a 90.

It's been said (so why am I posting), this isn't even close to a crossing the double line violation.

In a race, I take the shortest legal route through turns.  If there are no cones directing the turn, it's fair game as far as I am concerned.

Could a penalty be assessed? Yeah, if someone was interested in the letter of the rules rather than the spirit of them.

Should one be? Absolutely not. The application of rules always needs to be tempered by good judgment. The words in the USAT rules that refer to an official's discretion are probably the most important ones in there.

he is turning which means he has to go over the line sometime and frankly I rather see him might a little wider turn than fall or slow way down causing people to hit him when they turn.
