I thought that certainly there must have been a mistake ... how does one sneak fins into the swim?  How do you not get caught?

I think I read on the Iron Distance IMFL watching thread on Saturday that the guy was caught getting out of the water with them and DQ on the spot.  I don't believe he got to continue the race.

Here is a quote from KathyG:

"Back from swim volunteer duty.

They caught a guy using flippers on the swim...DQed him.

Everyone looked great...fast swim times."

According to the thread on ST, they took the fins away after the 1st loop, and he continued, and finished the race.  He also supposedly did IMFL in 2007.

I know the guy is cheating. It takes nothing away from anyone however, except for himself. It's like people who jump courses who haven't paid - doesn't bother me at all. I'm being a bit silly, I know, but this was probably some fat guy who is a bad swimmer. I agree he should just swim in the ocean if he wants exercise and not enter a race - but his fee went towards something didn't it? He got DQ'd, didn't he? So who cares? Chalk him up to being a loser. He still probably got a good workout in.

I am rolling in laughter!! For once, I agree with Big John. Unless the SOB is going to podium or take a Kona slot, who freakin cares. He will always know he is not an Ironman. While I, on the other hand, sleep well at night...

I think the commentary was on the very nature of cheating.  You make a good point that it does not really matter.  However, I wonder if 30 people, even bad swimmers, got caught with fins if your take on it would hold up.  It was only 30 guys out of 2000, so what.   One cheater is too many.

And not only is one cheater too many BUT if the cheaters know they are going to cheat going into the race then they are taking away slots that could go to others that plan to "play by the rules"....IMFL is so popular that they wouldn't have a problem getting a rules abiding racer to pay the fee........

I cant beleive Big John finally sucked me in-

Rules are in place for a reason. If the guy wants to get in a workout, let him do it on his own time. There are thousands of people who want to race IMFL, but could not get in due to selling out so quickly. I feel that he should have been DQ'd on the spot. If you do not deal with cheaters firmly, then it becomes an even bigger issue. It is not fair to anyone behind him that they lost one place.

BTW-  if you are "some fat guy who is a bad swimmer", DON"T do a freaking Ironman!

Even if he's a fat guy that can't swim well, that doesn't excuse the fact that he cheated. He cheated. I'd say DQ him, then send him to DQ.

I am just honestly amazed that people who can't swim would even want to do a triathlon. Flotation devices?

Fins?

Or like in the HIM I did, mask and snorkle?

WTF?

Seriously. If you can't swim maybe triathlon is not the sport for you.

Really, fins? What's next? Motorcylces on the bike and roller blades on the run?

BTW, flotation devices are NOT against the rules.

BTW, flotation devices ARE against the rules.

4.9 Illegal Equipment: Any swimmer wearing any artificial propulsion device, including but not limited to fins, gloves, paddles, or floating devices of any kind shall be disqualified.

I stand corrected.  I've had several people tell me they were allowed!  Oh well!  Don't really care.  I don't need them!

At James's Sprint in September....

 Snorkle Man

I would think that fins are also a hazard to other swimmers at a mass start like IMFL.  Hard plastic kick is a lot harder than a foot.

I just wonder if the guy has kids.  I mean, how do you justify teaching your kids that lying/cheating is wrong (like most parents do) and then have to take a DQ for cheating in a race - even if you're not trying to podium.

Rad-Onc PA - 2008-11-04 4:44 PM Coming from a person who really struggles on the swim....that irritates me. I suffered for 27 min in my first Oly distance ocean swim. I earned my salt water induced nausea! ...and I finished.... Agree 100% with all things posted on how wrong this guy is

27 minutes ain't that bad brother...understand the suffering part, but your MOP with that time :-)

LOL...I wish wasn't that bad but in reality it was awful. The swim started with a 200M out, a left turn around the buoy, 1100M to the next buoy WITH A NICE CURRENT...then left turn to the beach. There were only 3 slower than me. A couple people were in the 14 min. range. I had serious issues with the new wetsuit...really messed up my shoulder. I guess I didn't have it pulled up enough and I could not move my arms very well. It was misery. But I finished (without fins )

Did I mention the REALLY nice help from the current???

...

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe snorkles are legal, according to USAT rules.

I've seen it at a local race and was told the individual suffered from some neck injuries and couldn't twist his neck well.  Besides, have you ever tried to breath hard through a snorkle?  That's a handicap, not an enabler!

Yes, I know snorkels are legal.  It's just never what you expect at a 400 meter swim...

And I just spit Coke all over my monitor......

The point of all of this is that for the most part we as triathletes are doing these races for ourselves. The percentage of the total population who will qualify for Kona or make the Olympic team (or even podium at the local sprint) is pretty low.

If you cheat whether it is by drafting or cutting the course or pharmasuetically you are only cheating yourself.

If you can't turn your neck enough to breathe...might be 400m swim cut short by suffocation...

I saw a guy at a tri last year and he explained the whole fused vertebrae/neck/need for snorkel thing to me as well, because at first I thought use of same was illegal...

roller blades suck to go up hills with, btw. i'd rather run.

motorcycles on the bike? crap...the price for a high end bike just tripled!

OK, here is my $.02.  What amazes me is that you guys seem to care so much. Brett makes a good point here.  98% of us do these races for ourselves. I know I do.  Only a small percentage of people are competing for any type of award.  So he did not go by the rules,  I could care less because I am not racing him.  I am doing it for myself.

BTW, good job Big John for getting some action going on the board.    I understand people taking this stuff seriously if they are even close to getting an award, but I thought most of us were out there just having a good time not worrying about everyone else.

Dont pick on this guy's mask.  My OW goggles are pretty darn similar!

I came into this thread thinking that it was offering tips on how to cheat at IMFL!
