Subject: Anyone regret spending TOO much on your bike?

I recently bought a Cervelo P2c Dura Ace for $2700, which was close to $1000 more than I'd planned to spend on a tribike, being a total road bike noob.

I was worried I'd regret having such an incredible bike for someone of my new ability, but after a few rides and one longer 40 mile group ride, I have to say that I now think that not compromising on the bike was an excellent decision, as I ride with the carbon fiber guys without hesitation and worry. Also to my surprise, I easily kept up with the front group despite my noob status, and I strongly suspect that my aerobike helped with that. Plus, I seem to be taking much better care of the bike (post-ride detailing) and am very fired up to ride it as much as I can.

Even though I have no regrets about the big bike purchase, I was just wondering if any of you trifolks regret spending as much as you did on your bike, since I've had absolutely zero regrets since riding about my P2C. If so, what were they?

I bought my Cervelo P2SL in the spring of 2006 for $3000.  Now I could buy a P2SL for less than 2K and a P2C for 2.4K.  Do I regret having bought the Pitou?  No, not one bit!  I've had it for 3 seasons now and new tire of it.  It is still the lightes, stiffest, most beautiful bike I've ever owned.

Nope.  I spent 2700 on the P2C ultegra, but a couple weeks after, I had a thought I should have paid the 1200 more for the P3....  buyer's remorse...

It is almost as bad as buying computers.  As soon as you think that you found the perfect one and order it up you get it and find out something newer/faster/lighter is coming out.

That is the reason I had 7 bikes at one time and over 6 maxed out credit cards ........ but I didn't regret any purchase!!

I'm in the opposite boat.  I was on a tight budget and bought a road bike last year - I wish I'd waited, saved some more pennies and bought a Tri Bike.  I'll have this bike for a while before buying a Tri bike.

I do kind of regret spending so much on bikes this year (I bought a 2008 Cervelo RS with SRAM Red components AND a 2008 Cervelo P3C). I don't need either of those bikes and probably should not have gotten either of them. I feel a bit embarrased about it all. I totally LOVE them, but I don't feel I DESERVE them. I would have been better off getting a P2.

This thread is a joke, right? You can never spend too much!

Jessica - you should be embarrassed of yourself!

Nope.  Not at all.  If anything, I regret that I didn't spend more on my road bike because I'd like a better one now.

I also was a bit conservative when I bought my Cannondale, and sometimes wish I had spent more.  At the same time, my R700 has been a great ride and is well-equipped with a combination of 105 & Ultegra.

x2 and to round it off I wish I had known what I know now about bikes before I made the purchase as I would have got something completely different!

I haven't (yet) but my philosophy is more "If you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to buy it..."

I'm sure someone who has dropped major coin on a bike to have it stolen or run into the top of the garage while strapped to the top of the car would probably vote "yes"

I regret spending too little.  I wish I had known more and gone for a better bike initially.  Now I need to upgrade.

Had I bought my bike new, like it is set up, I would have probably felt like I spent too much.  As it is I ended up with a 2 year old Cervelo P3 with full dura ace, full carbon aero bars & extenstions, carbon seat post, and HED Jet 60 wheels for $1500.  So I am quite happy knowing that I will NEVER have to buy another bike...I am however saving up to send it in to HOT Tubes to have it custom painted.

I have more $$$ invested in my bike than I do in my motorcycle. I don't regret it, but I do have a tough time justifying it to friends that don't ride.

Why would you feel the need to?

I agree with some of the others..I wish I'd spent more. I got a pretty decent deal on a Trek E7, but also had decent deals on some others that are a higher grade. At the same time, how much faster would it had made me? It's not like I'm a pro!

Bikes are like computers, In 6month the new model will role out for the same price with better stuff. Try not to spend to much on our initial bike. Upgrade the components and from there just buy the frames.

Good point. But unlike bikes, computers have quite a bit more capability 6 months down the road. Bikes, on the other hand, are only marginally better. My point is that you can often get more "bike" for your money by looking for exceptional deals on year (or two) old bikes being closed-out at a bike shop or on the net.

Also, bikes never core dump.

As triathletes we have a moral obligation to spend a lot of money on bikes. If we don't, then who will? OK, roadies will, but that's only because they don't have to buy running shoes, wetsuits, swim coaching, or a tri-specific bike.
