Master 1524 Reston, VA | Subject: What's the coldest you have run in? Alright, so I am admittedly a cold sissy, but this is ridiculous. I am supposed to run 18 miles as part of training for a marathon tomorrow morning, and the temperatures are supposed to be 10 degrees for the majority of the run. what is the coldest you usually run in? At what point do you cry mercy? How would you dress if you go out? ....or do you just spend hours on the treadmill? This girl needs a little push. Edited by hooslisa 2009-01-16 6:56 AM |

I dunno, but I'll be out in the same temps with you (I'm local) My tri team has group runs every Saturday morning, and I plan to be there even if it's 10 degrees. Luckily, I'm only running a few miles I may just have to make a trip to REI tonight and see if they have any balaclavas left... |

Pro 4828 The Land of Ice and Snow | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? Coldest temps I have run in is -13F (-25C ) . I actually like running in the cold. This year however my body has decided to throw me a curveball and bless me with asthma......until I get treated properly I am running on the indoor track when its really cold. Boo Hiss. |

128 | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? Coming from Iowa where it is -25 degrees today (not counting windchill). 10 degrees isn't bad at all. I have done numerous runs below zero. The best analogy I can use is that your body is like your car. It will be rough going for the first few minutes as your engine heats up. However, once you get going you will be just fine. Invest in a good base-layer. I would wear some sort of underarmor, tech shirt and then a running jacket. On the bottom I would go for tights and a pair of running pants. Of course don't forget the gloves and hat! |

Extreme Veteran 481 West Chester, PA | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? I'll let you know later today. I'm running at lunch time today and the high is supposed to be somewhere around 18*. Before that, it was in the low 20's. I'll take a route that takes me by the bank that has a thermometer and update again after lunch. This as probably been mentioned over and over again, but for me, they key to running in the cold is to not have any exposed skin. I wear two pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves, tights under wind pants, a tech shirt, fleece and wind breaker, a balaclava (sp?) and a hat on top of that and I'm nice and warm. Extreme Veteran 606 | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? I Have to say I'm a cold sissy as well. I just never have enjoyed running when it's below freezing. I have tried layers, but I sweat alot so even if I underdress, I sweat and then get very cold. I just run on the treadmill. I have actually gone 14 miles on one....good for mental training. It's strange because I have done lost of winter mountaineering and cold doesn't seem to bother me then. Guess it's mostly mental. |

Pro 4675 Wisconsin near the Twin Cities metro | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? If x-c skiing counts (of course it does), then I have raced at minus 20. We had to postpone the start so that we would reach FIS legal start temps from the low of minus 40 that morning. Minus 26 here in NW WI this morning - balmy 20 by tomorrow supposedly. Here's what I wore on Monday's run: Craft sleeveless top, Craft windstopper briefs, Craft windstopper pants underwear, Hind Arctic drylete bottoms, windbreaker, Swix ear covers, Briko x-c racing goggles (for the falling and blowing snow/high winds), and Birkie race hat made for a fairly comfortable run despite blowing snow and temps. |

Master 1853 syracuse | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? last night. i didnt relize it was 1 outside. My eyelids started to freeze and my, um, how should I say this....private part, was numb. thought it fell off. after 20 minute shower it was back to normal, but I never felt pain like that before, actually felt like I was going to throw up, too, although not sure why I got that sensation.... It was the only area that was cold.... too cold, from now on, 10 degrees or more....or where 3 socks instead of two Edited by cusetri 2009-01-16 7:37 AM |

Expert 844 Denver, Colorado | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? Not sure how cold I've gone out in. Single digits for sure. Some good gloves and a hat are a must. I usually wear a long sleeve tech shirt and I'll push out the pullover if its really cold. I got with the shorts/pants or short/tights combo for the legs. The first mile is cold but its perfectly enjoyable after that. |

Veteran 298 West Henrietta, NY | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? Well, I try and do my long run outside on the weekends. I wear running pants, a cold weather underarmor shirt and a running jacket, that keeps my body warm. A big thick hat and heavy gloves take care of the rest. Last weekend it was 12F when I started and 17F when I finished my 9 miles. My water was mostly frozen when I finished, but I was warm the entire time. If it's windy I'll throw on something to cover my face, but I don't like that so only do it if it's really windy. |

Champion 5850 Michigan | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? 10 miles in -14 ambient temp through the trails. No idea the wind chill. Rkreuser was along for the....fun. As long as my skin is covered, I'm totally fine with it. It makes it more like an adventure! |

Regular 91 Saratoga Springs, NY | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? scout21 - 2009-01-16 8:19 AM I wear two pairs of socks, two pairs of gloves, tights under wind pants, a tech shirt, fleece and wind breaker, a balaclava (sp?) and a hat on top of that and I'm nice and warm. I've recently been running in temperatures hovering around 10 degrees and this is almost exactly what I use. The balaclava is particularly useful, I have the basic one sold by Performance and it is the best 16 dollars I've spent. I also use their neoprene socks and they have kept my feet very warm even though I use them with ventilated running shoes. I also wear eye protection. I switch out the lenses on my sunglasses with clear/lowlight and wear them to protect my eyes from the wind when it is dark or not sunny enough to require actual sunglasses. |

Veteran 419 | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? I did 16 miles last year with the temp at about 15 degrees. There was also snow on the ground which made it more fun. I refuse to run that far on the treadmill, but had to get the long run in like you. I wore a good base layer (North Face cold gear) then running pants on the bottom. I wore the same North Face Base layer on top with a longsleeved cold weather shirt and my North Face/ Apex jacket on top. All is breathable and keeps moisture away from my body. I wore ski socks to get some extra warmth, yet not worry about blisters and Yak Trax (due to the snow). I also wore my ski mask and a stocking cap. It was not a fun run, but it made the 20 mile run seem much easier a few weeks later |

Coach 10487 Boston, MA | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? minus 15ish with the wind chill. Last night it was around zero F and as I posed on my log when I took my hat off it had a few ice cube size chunks of ice formed from the sweat. It didn't feel that cold but it is the 1st time I could have fixed me a wiskey on the rocks using ice from my hat after a run |

It if it s really cold I might add tape to my sneakers (to insulate the heat) or mayb extra socks, add a wind breaker jacket (or a warm vest) and a balaclava plus my hat |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: What's the coldest you have run in? I've done a 15-miler in 10 degree weather, 20-25mph winds. It was two loops and I started crying when I began the second loop, since I was running into the wind. I quickly realized that my tears would freeze, so stopped that right away I had made a deal with myself that I'd do half (1 loop) no matter what, and if I had to, I'd do the rest at the gym. Once I got going on the second loop, got out of the wind, and stopped crying, the world was a better place. I wore heavy running pants, two long-sleeved wicking tops, a windbreaker, two paris of gloves, a hat that covered my whole head and ears, and a scarf. The scarf, while it was not wicking, was great to cover the rest of my face and loosen when I got a tad warm. Make a deal with yourself to at least try it... you might be surprised.

But these days, I just cannot seem to motivate myself to do so in such bone chilling temperatures. Must be old age ... It does seem to get tougher with age. With the wind chill, -28C this year. I caved this week and went to the indoor track when wind chills were at -47C. Layer, layers and more layers. Warm mitts, ski socks & wicking neck tube are a must. |
