Subject: Latest Issue of Triathlete Mag.
Just wondering if anyone has gotten the latest issue of Triathlete magazine.  Ours arrived yesterday & I was a little shocked by the cover - which has a very fit amateur triathlete gal in a bikini on the front (don't remember her name), alongside whom there is a caption which basically asked the question whether triathletes are obsessed with their bodies for the sake of vanity...the opening line of the inside article says something to the affect that triathletes know they're hot and that most races are a "see and be seen" flesh party.    The spread also showed about 7 pages of various triathletes (non-pros), 1 of which was a guy...the rest gals in 2 piece suits..I think one was in a one piece swimsuit, a tri suit....I'm just curious what others think about the angle the mag is working.

***This thread is worthless without pics***

All joking aside, I haven't seen the issue yet, but I believe last year they did a "Sex Issue" that drew some criticism.  My guess is that it is nothing more than a marketing tool to sell more magazines

Annual question. The concensus, if I'm not mistaken, is that 74 percent believe it's all good and 26 percent question the magazine's motives. I, personally, am in the former camp.

To the magazine's question -- there's no doubt for some people it's a skin show. For others who rock the onesie, it's about not only looking way cooler than most, it's about looking way cooler than ALL!

Kamano, that's her last name.  Smokin, that's all I have to say.

I'm not gonna lie - I like ogling the hawt male triathletes at races, in training, etc. I've definitely come close to wiping out on my bike or falling all over myself while running (only in training, though, don't worry) from staring at some tasty-looking specimen going by. And body marking is FUN. The hot ones make up for the fat, hairy guys

Stacy Kamano was/is a model/actress that I guess did some triathlons...  Probably not the BEST example of a triathlete (but I don't know her race history)...

I think they find the hottest thing they can that has any kind of a history in triathlon to put on the cover to sell issues...

I think the whole issue is kind of dumb.  Not that I mind looking at sexy women (I'm fine with that), but it just stirs up all kinds of crap for the next 3 months (letters to the magazine, follow up stories, complaints, etc)...

Just to much to do about nothing, IMO.

ETA:  Trust me.  During transition setup?  You know I'm looking at the tri chicks....

Using "sex" to sell something? Pretty standard fare in marketing.

She did Ironman 70.3 Hawaii last year and finished in 6:33:46.  Maybe if she was faster she'd be the BEST example of a triathlete, but she's faster than me.

FWIW, I can't wait to see if my copy came in the mail today!

She is hawt.  But, she doesn't belong on the cover of a triathlon mag.  I'd rather see a fast chick who doesn't have permanent floaters attached.  Know what I'm sayin'?

That's what I've got in my right eye, floaters.  It really screws up your vision sometimes, and then .... ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, nevermind. Peter, you are a naughty, naughty boy.

Yup yup.

Such a debate over such a worthless issue, IMO. Don't like the 'swimsuit issue'? Don't subscribe! Don't buy it! Don't look at it! Just like everything else in life.

As for the implication that triathlons are flesh fests or what not... kind of comes with the terrirory of sports in general. Ever been to a women's volleyball game? Any running race (or sporting event in general) in the summer? The pool?

Why do opponents of the 'swimsuit issue' think baring flesh is unique to triathlon?

Then don't look at the cover. Check out page 22, or 25, or 37, or 48, or...

  • ..the opening line of the inside article says something to the affect that triathletes know they're hot and that most races are a "see and be seen" flesh party.    ..............

  • I guess I am in the minority. I have never considered myself hot. Most of my races are a "go hard and hope I don't soil myself" party.

Got mine a few days ago, didn't give a second thought, much like I didn't give a second though to the pace booty, BT girls/guys threads here on the forum.

Tri is a lot of hard work and it's good to look good. Nothing wrong with that!
