For all the more experienced triathletes - You all have tips or things that you know, that never occur to you to pass on. So c'mon, dredge your thoughts for those little things that you know but never think about.

1. Drinking from water bottles - If you are new, it takes a bit of practice, but try to drink without sucking extra air. (Also challenging on the run). All that extra air you swallow (especially in a longer race) will end up producing gastric upsets and/or little "explosions" later on.

2. Lace locks - If you use these, cut your laces down. Nothing more annoying than having really long laces whapping against your legs or being stepped on in a race.

3. Looking on the bike - Learn to either peek around your shoulder without veering, and/or practice peeking underneath your arm straight back.

Anyone else?

John

Fingernails, too, so you don't tear your wetsuit.

Aid Station- pinch the top of the cup, it's a lot easier to drink from it on the run.

I just learned this in my half marathon training - ouch!  A friend of mine wanted me to wear flower pasties.  I think I would opt for natural colored circle bandaids.

Body glide around the neck of your wetsuit is important! You never know when something might cause it to bite/chaffe you...even if it doesn't regularly happen, it might so prep ahead of time!

On the way to a race.... if you have pre race "GI issues" like many of us, stop into a Starbucks, or McDonalds, or a nice gas station.   Spending time in a nice clean bathroom prior to a race.. priceless!

Body Glide is your friend.  It can go on your feet, your crotch, around your neck, and on your eyebrows.

^^^ this is my favorite secret and works great. You'll feel lucky when you get to race site and see all those folks waiting in lines for port a potties.

1) drink before you're thirsty.

2) work your transition process into your training (even include mount/dismount)

3) train for the course (hills, wind, heat, etc....)

4) Take a gel or energy shot, or whatever you like to use for nutrition about 15 minutes before your swim (mostly for Oly and up distances).

5) As others have said…body glide is your unsung hero!  Use it liberally in places you’ve never had problems before.  Better safe than sorry.

Just dont put it on your feet before the swim, you end up picking up every small stone/grain of sand on the way into T1 and it can be hell to get rid of, if running without socks, I usually just put the BG straight onto the parts of my shoe that might rub.

Oh and put bodyglide on the outside of your wetsuit, bottoms of arms and legs, wetsuit comes off much easier!

I've used body glide on my feet prerace for ever and ever, and never had a problem with sand and grit sticking. Maybe it comes off in my bike shoes, I don't know--but it's never bugged me on the run, and I run sockless as well.

Just has a flashback of the episode of "The Office" where they all go running.  You don't want to have an Andy Bernard experence.

I like to use mine as mini daggers against those that draft too close during the swim!

If, during a marathon, you are offered gelatinous looking stuff on a popsicle stick, do not eat it. It is NOT energy gel.

One thing I do that I'm not sure a lot of people do. Is I'll stand there go through putting sunglasses on, then helmet then shoes.. etc. Rinse and repeat many many times the day of the race. Then I'll walk/jog the route to my bike from the swim exit and bike dismount a few times as well, maybe even a few more if it's a real big race.

Goggles on the inside of your cap.

I can't really think of very much. Keep things simple and clean.

Superglue is your friend.

Yes, everyone really is peeing in their wetsuit.

The swim distance is never accurate--don't look at times, look at your place in relation to others.

Check your gearing when you rack your bike after your last warm up prerace. No one wants to start out at some ungodly 55-13 ratio.

Do not sit down in transition.

Your stomach/poop always knows when it's race day...even if YOU don't care one IOTA about the race and it's only a training run. It ALWAYS knows, and adjusts its output accordingly.

Always throw a dry sport bra, handiwipes, and deoderant in your car for post race.

  • Throw a roll of toilet paper in your bag for the porta-potties. They will inevitabely run out.
  • Be prepared for a rainy day... bring some trash bags to throw your wet stuff in, dry clothes, and extra dry towels for the ride home. Nothing like having to load back into the car soaked and muddy from head to toe.
  • Some people bring sharpies and body mark themselves to save time not standing in line.
  • Some people pre-place baby powder inside their socks to help get them over wet feet in T1.

From my only tri experience...

Remember where you park your bike, don't use your bike as the place marker.  And don't forget where you park even you already picked up the bike for the bike course.

Pump your tires before the race and not the night before...

Sprint out of the water and into T1...you can pass a bunch of ppl here.

Don't set up a picnic in transition area......keep it simple and don't give yourself an opportunity to THINK.

Stock up on disposable flip flops.  It'll make your walk to the swim start more comfortable, and if they aren't there after the race, you won't be too upset.

If there's a hill coming out of transition, make sure you have your bike in the right gear!

Spray sunscreen = brilliant.  I reapply quickly before going out on run in races longer than a Sprint, and rub it in as I am leaving transition.
