Sunny
Total Time = 1h 28m 31s
Overall Rank = 198/934
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 40/115
Pre-race routine:

Drive an hour to Boulder. Oh, and it was a busy week, so pack all my stuff, get drinks ready, etc. Before leaving at 4:30am
Event warmup:

jog to the porta john. repeat.
swim 20yds out. return.
Swim
  • 15m 24s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 03s / 100 meters
Comments:

It was a fairly long run from the water to the timing mat. I'm OK with this time.
My fellow AGers SUCK at navigation though! BRUTAL swim, especially at the turn. I was kicked and climbed upon all the way out and back!
What would you do differently?:

Go balls out.
Transition 1
  • 01m 53s
Comments:

Left the shoes on the pedals and put them on while riding. That works really well!
The darn chip got stuck in the ankle of the wetsuit. How the heck do you practice that?
What would you do differently?:

Put gels in helmet - then I'll have to stick em in my pockets.
Take the swim cap off my head while running into T1 (tried to put the helmet on over the swim cap!)
I'm sure it'll get faster.
I took an extra 10 seconds just to make myself think, have a little water, towel off face. I could take those 10 seconds out, but I didn't sweat it today.

Bike
  • 44m 43s
  • 17 miles
  • 22.81 mile/hr
Comments:

I hit the bike hard. NOBODY passed me :)
As I keep racing, I'll learn how to get a feel for output over distance. I could have ridden faster.
What would you do differently?:

Drink more on the bike. I had 24oz of gatorade and about 6oz of water. Another 16oz of water would have helped the run.
Forgot my gel shot.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Never did get those yankz on my runners. So I sat down and tied my damn shoes!
Oh, and I forgot to put on my new race belt. I had put the other stuff in my shoes so I didn't have to look for it. Just didn't even see it there. Would have SUCKED to get a penalty or DQ for THAT!!!
What would you do differently?:

Yankz.
Put on my number!!!
Run
  • 25m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew I would beat my goal time of 1:30, so I eased up and I thought I was really slow. I'm surprised my pace was still this fast. I also thought the heat was devastating. If the run had been 10k or longer I would have stopped to drink at an aid station.
What would you do differently?:

RUN MORE!
Hydrate better on the bike. Shoulda dumped water on my head at aid#1 & 2.
If I could have come out strong on the run, I could have placed 8 positions higher in my AG by running 1:30 faster (7:38 pace).
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched and HYDRATED. I got two blisters on the arch of my foot. OWWW I guess I'm a baby because they HURT! Got a bandaid.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training. Need more of it. I can already imagine how much faster I'll be by NEXT YEAR! :)
Third place in my AG finished 1:13:52. OK, I have some serious training to do if I want hardware!!!
THIS IS FOR ME TO THINK ABOUT OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS -
I've gone through the spreadsheet and here's how I get to next year's goal time of 1:18 -
2 minutes faster on swim
1 min faster on T1
2 min faster on bike (24 avg)
0.5 faster t2
4.5 faster run (6:38 pace)
- If I can run 6:38 in a year, I'll bet I can ride 25 and make it 1:16.

Event comments:

Short on shade at the post race - otherwise a superb effort to put on the race! MUCH better than the 1/2 mary last sunday by the same group.

Congratulations, that was one fast ride. Also, those are fast transition times for a first tri. Great showing.

It was so great meeting you today Brett.  You are CRAZY fast.  I can't wait to hear how BSL goes.  You are going to ROCK that place!!

Great job today man.  And I'm guessing the 10 seconds you took for yourself in T1 were worth it!

Great first race!  Very nice bike pace.

A guy next to me in the transition area was painting New Skin on his toes.  Says he gets blisters when running and this stuff helps prevent them.  I've used the stuff in the past on long hikes, but never in a tri.  You might think about trying this stuf.

See you next week at the Buffalo Springs Lake HIM.

That was a damn fine showing at your first tri. You raced like a seasoned veteran, Brett. And the post-race Hawaiian shirt was stellar, you fashionista. I still can't get over your bike time - incredible! You'll kick some serious Texan ass at BSL next weekend. Go and show 'em how Coloradans get it done And don't forget to tell Gina hi for me!

I need to get some Yankz too - glad to know I wasn't the only person in transition that had to TIE my shoes

THANKS!  for the nice notes!  I started training for tris in 1985.  'Bout damn time I got it done!   Now it's time to taper for another first - my first half ironman.

Hey awesome race. Nothing better then gaining knowledge through experience. You are so focused, I would like to take a feather from your cap in that area. Keep up the good work and nice that you got to hang with Kristen and the other bters!

It looks like your solid base training (from 1985 until now) served you well on your first tri. Congrats. It sounds like you have a good plan and will be well on your way to placing in your AG. Great bike split BTW.
