Overall Rank = /
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 92/93
Pre-race routine:

Wake up hourly - listen to the wind outside, fall back asleep - repeat til dawn... Two power bars for breakfast at 6:00.
Event warmup:

Nothing too much, wander around waiting for swim to start and then wait for the cycle time trial start...
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1640 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

Cancelled due to mini typhoon in Offats bayou... Good thing it was cancelled, if they had tried to forward it would have looked like the British trying to evacuate Dunkirk all over again... There was no way there were enough watercraft available to get all the people out that would have been in trouble...
What would you do differently?:

Fasted swim ever for me in an oly :)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Fastest T1 ever too....
Bike
  • 1h 29m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.68 mile/hr
Comments:

We did a time trial start - every three seconds - started well, mounted well at the mount line, felt great up to the seawall, got on the main road and it felt like a slight headwind or at least a perpendicular crosswind. Just worked on maintaining a smooth pedal stroke. Averaged almost 20 mph through the first 10 miles based upon rough guessing distance and time. Hit the turn around and smack into a fairly strong quartering wind all the way back. Actuall drank half a bottle of water and half a bottle of gatorade during the bike...
What would you do differently?:

Push harder. Figure out how to get the legs up to speed sooner on the bike, seems like I don't settle in for at least 4-5 miles... Get my Garmin cadence and quick mount hooked up so that I have some information to work with when cycling... Get some more T.I.T.S... :o
Transition 2
  • 02m 47s
Comments:

Meh
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice transitions
Run
  • 1h 20m 44s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m  min/mile
Comments:

Took off out of transition at my "normal" pace of about 10min/mile. That was not going to work long... I broke into a 1:1 run walk for the duration. May not have been fast, but it got done...
What would you do differently?:

Have more run fitness :) Oh yeah, not change sock types the day of the race... (how stupid of me, duh...) I used my NB running socks which are great and comfortable and all but I have not run in Brooks with them prior to race day - nice quarter sized blister on my heel that turned into a wound by the time I was done with the run. They had a bandaid at the medical tent for me after the race.
Post race
Warm down:

Found my wife and my buddy Johnny. Walked around the finish area for a while. Stopped by the beer tent and got two. Drank the first and felt like I was going to be sick (combo of not eating and carbonation, etc was apparently not good...)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The usual. Plan eating better. I was starving by the time we got started.

Event comments:

Very nicely done race... I'm afraid the sprint and oly will become after thoughts to the IM 70.3 event in the future which will dissappoint me as this was a great race and venue.

Andy, it was so great to meet you!  Don't get too hard on yourself.  The Oly folks started a lot later making it hotter than heck out there...give yourself a little time to rebuild after your injury.  Then you can nail our next event, the Las Vegas half marathon in December!

Finally getting around to reading everyone's RR - You did great, Andy! Those winds by the seawall were epic, and you kept a good pace. As for the running - well.....take satisfaction in knowing that you're faster than me! Embarassed

Nice meeting you and your wife! See you at OCCC!

I was really looking forward to reading your RR.  Sorry it took so long.  I've been trying to settle back in after vaca.

Looks like overall you have a great race and a great time.  I tell you what, I can't stand wind, but it looks like you powered through it.  For me, it can be very demoralizing.  Good choice to switch to the walk / run combo.  One foot in front of the other.  That's what it's all about.  Great job.  70.3 is next!!
