Went for a swim in the lake today....it is pretty warm...but I'm used to swimming in like 13C water in BC and Alberta. I really don't need a wetsuit...debating if I am going to wear it or not even if it is wetsuit legal...I don't really like to wear it and I don't think the time gains are that significant for me on the swim--throws my body position out, etc (I don't swim a lot on my wet suit...my bad )...I always feel constricted and especially hate getting up to run in it...decisions decisions....

Anyone else thinking no wetsuit? ETA: even if it is wetsuit legal?

If it is wetsuit legal (<76) Then I would recommend a wetsuit for all swimmers, even pro's all wear a wetsuit when it's leg.

If 76.+ but legal for non KQ no awards category then it's a tough call. Truthfully you have to balance the risks of going slower/not performing as well without one with the risks of hyperthermia by using a westuit on a hot swim day. Probably more risk with the hyperthermia for most unless a person truly feels as though they may not be able to do the swim without one.

1-2 hours of over-heating can have a bad affect on the rest of your IM day....

So what would *I* do??

I would wear one if legal and if 76.1+ I would not, but YMMV of course.

54 degrees at 7am tomorrow. It will be a close call for being wetsuit legal due to the warm sun today, but I'm wearing mine. I'm nowhere close to an award or slot and figure it will give be a corklike buoyancy after people swim over me.

Weather looks perfect at high 60s all morning and low 70s into the afternoon with humidity dropping as the day progresses. Wind 6-8 so very light though I'm sure we'll feel the gusts. Looks like a PR type weather day, but then again a simple finish will be a PR for me.

One other thing...I was much more comfortable in the sleeveless suit for yesterdays swim relative to Wednesdays swim in the full sleeve...so will be going with sleeveless for sure.  If I only had a full sleeve then I definitely would overheat and think twice about using the wetsuit.

It will be 55 degrees tonight so I still think it will be legal.

With a high of 73 tomorrow heat should not be a factor for the remainder of the race.  If anything the descent to Keene might be a little chilly.

Again, don't stress over it it's not like the water is 80deg like Eagleman where wearing a wetsuit would have been really rather dangerous.

*I* think the human mind sort of focuses on issues like this in a funny way and we naturally graviatate to worrying about risks we can tangibly understand better. The fact of the matter is that most of us tangibly worry more about the struggle of the swim without a wetsuit more than the less-tangible idea of over-heating in a wetsuit.

Even if it's 76-78, then at worst it's a wash, ie; either choice is fine.

I will stand by my assertion that sub 76 a wetsuit helps everyone....

Lol. I feel like I'm going to be peer pressured into wearing a wetsuit because I don't want to be "that crazy Canadian from Alberta" who didn't wear a wetsuit when everyone else did. Haha! I did a tri in Banff in Sept and the water temp was 10C/50F...I think that messed me up a bit! it's not really the temp that bugs me though...more just the tight feeling. I'll make a decision in the morning about it though!...#71--The crazy Canadian without a wetsuit!

You wont be crazy. I packed my speed suit for tomorrow morning.  Unless the air temp is super cool I'm wearing the speed suit.

Same here - but if it is legal and coolish and I decide to wear my wetsuit, I am definitely going with my sleeveless top. I am kicking myself for leaving my Desoto Speed Tube at home. If wetsuit legal, this would have been the perfect race for it - ah well, 4 miles into the bike the swim will be but a distant memory. Sleep tight and pleasant dreams, everyone - just think - piratenick and the other fasties will hopefully be finished (a special good luck to all the KQ hopefuls) and the rest of us should be out there enjoying the run by this time tomorrow!

Thanks for putting together the raceday tracker. Makes following along pretty slick (if only Ironmanlive would do there part)

Congrats to everyone so far.  Too bad there is a delay with the results being made available.

Is there still a delay with people anyone is following?
My buddy Amber (InnerAthlete) looks as if she did not make it off the bike, but I don't know if the system is still honked up or what

The tracker has been glitchy all day. I would not trust it.

Hope everybody had a great race!

My friend Steven (stevepiv) finished the race in 13:38! Steven is an IRONMAN! Very exciting!
