Subject: What I have learned from my pets
7 months ago we adopted a 4th dog (we have 4 acres so having big outside dogs works well).  She is a hound that the owner was trying to find a home for before it got put down (supposedly registered but never bothered to get the papers).  She (and the other dogs) have taught me a few things:
  1. If your happy let everyone know, a simple Boo Woo whooooo! Can put a smile on someone's face
  2. Running is not an exercise, it is fun.  Do it everyday.
  3. Love your children as they love you.
  4. A simple pat, hug, or kind word can go a long way
  5. Eat all of your food
  6. Special treats are good also
  7. Play with your friends as much as you can
  8. Playing ball is a fun group activity.

  9. So what has your pet taught you?

-  There's always time for a nap.

-  If you're happy, show it.

-  Snuggling is good.

- how to create a secret entrance to the house using a motor vehicle
- the correct way of sitting on a cat as to extract the maximum sound from it
- please, please remember where you left your shoes and keys on the beach, and remember to stop back by there before you get all the way back to the car. Actually, never mind, I haven't learnt this at all--Lisa Labradog still has to remind me
- the best way to make the cats eat out of their own bowls (as opposed to sticking their heads in the dog's bowl while she's trying to eat--a risky venture at best) is to STEAL THE BOWLS. The cats go crazy trying to get them back
- how to trick someone out of a whole piece of chicken instead of just getting bits or a bite from it
- the only condition exceeding the sheer, unadulterated joy of peeling down a deserted beach at midnight under the light of a full moon is ... running into some piglets who want to lick back.

That was last month. Stay tuned for the next instalment

Just in the last month, I've learned an important lesson from two of the elder statesmen of the animals around here.  Skipper (horse) is 32 and Falstaff (cat) is 16 and both have had health scares this month.  We've definitely learned that when the old guys don't look so good, PAY ATTENTION!  Watch them carefully every day for an little change.  I've also learned that when you're elderly like these two, you pretty much get what you want.  I hope I have it so good when I'm their equivalent age.

1) There is no such thing as to much snuggling and cuddling.
2) Loves multiplies the more you give it away.
3) Long walks with friends are the best, Long naps in the sun are almost as good.

If you can't eat it or hump it, pee on it and walk away.

- always stop and take time to sniff the flowers and take in your surroundings.

- hiking and the great outdoors are amazing (I was not much of a hiker/outdoorsy person before spacey came into my life 13 1/2 yrs ago)

- and all those other things everyone said before me

- Whine relentlessly until you get what you want - you deserve it after all.
- Good buddies are hard to find, so when you do find one let them know you like them.
- Grandma's house is the best place to be in the world.
- Clothing is definitely optional.

My cats continually remind me that if they can't have my warm lap they'll take whtaever clothes I leave around to lie on.
Lying in a sunbeam is the best thing in life......next to feeding time or a warm lap.
Be clear about what it is you want.  Oscar kitty won't lie on the couch unless we have a pillow just for him to perch on.

If you eat so fast that you throw up all of your dog food, you can eat it again and get two meals!

My dog has taught me a lot about forgiveness.  He needs it often, accepts it joyfully, and is in turn unfailingly willing to extend it quickly.  I'm striving to follow his example.

My Molly cat has taught me:

1)   Snatch up a good deal when I see one.
2)   Be myself. If someone doesn't like me, ignore them.
3)   Be protective of those I love.
4)   If it looks good and smells good...eat it!
5)   Be suspicious. Don't be so quick to trust. But when in, be all in.
6)   Be curious and brave. Stand up for myself. Even in the face of something or someone much bigger than me.

My Quentin cat has taught me:

1)   To take a lot of naps, and find the warmest spot.

And that is all. Kiss

All these posts without a single mention of the virtues of being able to scratch (and lick) oneself whenever and wherever one pleases.

I've learned that we must have ghosts in the house cuz the cats constantly do the 'stop everything and gaze upstairs move' a lot.
I've learned to enjoy those hugs and snuggles like theres no tomorrow.
I've learned to embrace smells no matter how pungent or how lovely as ways of experiencing life more fully.
And that silence can speak volumes.

Hubby is 6'7" and 280lbs and he is going in to pick up our dogs from the groomers at the pet store.  Two groomers bring out different sets of dogs.  One has a big beefy rottweiler and the other groomer is bringing out two little pomeranians.   When my hubby takes possession of the two pomeranians, another customer just bursts out laughing.  She was completely expecting the rottie to go with my husband, and thought it was hysterical to see the two pommies on his arms (he carries each like a football).

Sorry for the thread hijack, but he never thought he would like little dogs until the pommies.
