Pre-race routine:

Spent the night before the race puking up my healthy salmon and potato dinner. NICE! Glad I really worked on hydration the day before the race!!
Event warmup:

Walked about a mile to the race start with Trixie, CoGirl, Fitphd, Fromer, & RKreuser. Froze my tail off!
Run
  • 6h 00m 30s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 13m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt good first 5-6 miles. Puked at about mile 6.5--then I felt GREAT! Saw JKBostic, theattorney & the gang cheering at mile 5. THANK YOU!! :)

Started getting a blister on my left foot about mile 9, by mile 13 my right knee started really hurting. Up until then I was holding a nice pace and was VERY happy with this silly race!

At 13, I started walk/run due to the knee and foot pain. Still holding a decent pace, although much slower than I wanted.

At mile 18 I had a massive princess fit! I had enough, was in pain and didn't want to be there anymore. My knee and foot were killing me every step, and I couldn't run more than about 5-10 steps at that point. I was FREEZING as soon as I started walking. BUT...my thoughts went to Cogirl and the fact that she was sitting in a hospital with a broken foot, and I wasn't about to quit!! I was gonna finish this race, even if it took me all night long!! :) I WALKED miles 18-26.2. UGH!!

Luckily I had my phone and got updates on awesome finishes by Rick, Trix, Shannon & Chris!! :)

A great big THANK YOU to Jeff for coming back and giving me some moral support miles 22 thru the end!! :)

What would you do differently?:

Not get a big fat blister, train harder, stretch more, not whine!!

I finished 1.5 hours slower than my goal time, but at least I finished. I'm pretty freaking disappointed in myself.

Oh, and not have salmon swimming back upstream all night before the race. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Got my finisher's medal, caught up with JKBostic, RKreuser, Stake, ChipmunkHeart, JDicarlo & Fromer. Tried to get my foot and knee taken care of in the medical tent and get warm.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

A big fat blister and a painin' knee.

Event comments:

REALLY freaking crowded race. Hard to get keep a steady pace without weaving through millions of people. Good fan and volunteer support.

Glad you made it thru safely.  I think I  have blister scars from about every race I have done...now you do too   I was worried about your hydration.  Stick to simple foods pre-race...what happened to the chicken fingers?  Hope the legs quiet down...go see Kendra and congrats on the first mary

That was a tough job, Wendi!  You should be proud that you finished the friggin' Chicago Friggin' Marathon, and that you were walking, talking and fine later that night!  I saw a lot of people in worse shape than you!  I know you had a "princess fit" (LOL), and some health issues going on, but you DID IT!  Great job!

Wendi,

Sorry to hear about the migrating salmon.  That really sucks.

Glad that you stuck it out and finished though!  Way to hang tough and see it through.  No matter what, you finished that marathon!

Gator gloves?  I've seen a lot of gators and never saw one with gloves.  Sounds fishy to me.  Congrats on sticking with it through the pain and misery.  Nicely done!
