Pre-race routine:

Woke up 5AM, didn't sleep super well...and was dehydrated. Why I had 3 beers the night before is beyond me. Ummm. They were there. I guess that's good enough.

Slugged down about 4 gatorades, vitamins, 2 trixie cookies, and trekked southward torward the South Pole and the starting line.
Event warmup:

Waited in line for the port-a-potty with the peanut bladder girls. And Greg. Watched Cathy (COGIRL) dress and undress and dress again. Hopped the infamous fence to get in the starting corral, where Cathy rolled her ankle. Yikes!!! Bad news, we were all sad.

Got hit in the head with 3 long sleeve shirts that were thrown toward the sidelines from runners that were done being warm...Snagged probably 3 more that were aimed for us but were intercepted before they struck the intended target.

Crossed my legs to keep trix from looking up my shorts as she was sitting on the ground underneath the crowd. Ask her, I dunno. :)

Comments:

Started out with all the girls - but started in the 11:00 min/mile group due to a tactical miscalculation, and took off at a blistering 10 min mile pace. We were dodging people left and right, running in the gutter and hopping curbs and cars trying to get to the 4:00 or 3:55 pace groups.

Trix, Shannon and I settled in at an 8:45 pace by about mile 5 or 6, and had our first encounter with BT folk at mile 7 (Stake, Chipmunkheart - thanks!!). By 10 Trix decided to honor her bronchitis (and other things) by taking it conservatively, so Shan and I soldiered on.

Ran into The entire BT Gang (Theattorney, Jkbostic, rennick, jldicarlo, and others that I may not have seen) at mile 12 or 13 or sometime - who the hell knows when?! And Shannon and I kept on keeping on until about 17, when I decided to be stupid and take off. Logged a couple very fast miles (sub 8), and paid for em.

Finished with a whimper, last two miles in 25+ min (10 min Mile 25, 15 min mile 26). Just didn't have the finishing juice. That little mistake cost me about 2000 places (6 minutes).

PR'ed by 6 min, but it could have been much better. But all in all, very happy with the result. :)

Funny Stuff:

- Running with Trixie. OMG, you haven't run until you've run with Trixie. EVERYONE knows trixie, and the ones that didn't now do. And a good number of spectators and contestents know she had to pee. And one runner tried to pick her up. Trixie needs to pee.

- Sign at mile 9: 17 miles to go...F**K that.
- Sign in mexican town: El Yay!!
- The transvestite cheerleaders in boystown
- Guy running in a red cross TENT
- Guy running in a full cow suit with bells
- Guy trying to pick trixie up at mile 5 (no offense, but your calves are magnificent)
- Hi, sailor! :)
What would you do differently?:

Not take off at mile 17 - just be steady. I think that cost me 5-6 minutes, which translates to 2000 places or so.

Post race
Warm down:

Long walk through the finish chute, but scored a mylar blankie, medal, fruit, bagel, and water. Met up with Fromer, Jldicarlo, Jkbostic, fitphd, trixie, stake, chipmunkheart, theattorney. Hung around for G8RSAX to finish...it got cold, quickly, once I stopped moving..

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training (run more than 5 times the month before the marathon, maybe?)

Poor Hydration (avoid the beers the night before?)

Event comments:

Huge numbers of runners and spectators. Crowds EVERYWHERE. Not for the claustrophobic or folks that like fresh air and country breezes. It's an industrial strength crowd from 6AM to 3PM.

Plenty of volunteers, and the fan support was phenomenal.

Run with Trixie if possible. :)

Great race report. I think you should have had 4 beers the night before! Must have been great to see all the BTers out there. I only know JBostic from St Anthony's last year.

Mr. I'm not gonna run too well, you sure pulled off a nice race!

I think that last month was a carefully calculated taper.

Way to stick it out, that last 2 miles was really rough for me too.  I guess that's what makes it fun to do, 'cause if it was easy, everyone would do it!

Great race!

Rick, that beer's all about carbin' up.  The reason you ran out of gas is that you didn't finish the six pack.

Great run, just phenomenal.

Sweet race Rick!  You really kicked a**!  Sounds like a great time had by all.  Hopefully next year I won't be wounded and can join the BT crowd for the race.

Good race Rick, especially with the lack of running recently. It was nice of you to let all those people pass you at the end. Very chivalrous, I'm sure they appreciated it.
