Total Time = 3h 45m 55s
Overall Rank = 2786/
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 152/169
Pre-race routine:

Ate a power bar, drank some amino vital.
Event warmup:

Walked down to transition, got it all set up, then back to the bed & breakfast to get in the wetsuit, then back to the beach for the boy's swim waves to start. Total walking warmup ~2 miles. Stood around and watched Chris, Jeff, Karl, Rick, James and Mike all take off into the water. Found Sue and completed our "hair braiding" tradition while we sat on the beach watching the beautful sunrise.
Swim

Comments:

This swim SUCKED! The surf was churned up and the wind was blowing like a mutha. 4-5 foot swells made me a WHOLE BUNCH askeeered!! I debated about even starting the race, but someone's words about me being a sissy rang thru my head. So...I meandered into the water, wondering if I would make it out alive!! I only threw up 2 times in the water this year!! WOOOO!! Such an accomplishment for me!! But...I got out seasick and with a bloated belly.
What would you do differently?:

Brought a bikini and stayed on the beach where it was safe??!!
Transition 1
  • 04m 5s
Comments:

I saw BonBonNeaser at my bike rack as I came into transition. She was an angel!

Bike
  • 1h 24m 31s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 17.64 mile/hr
Comments:

I had so much fun on this bike!! I never felt like I was working hard the entire time, my legs gave me power when I asked for it!! I LOVED IT!! I even passed a man with a disc wheel, exchanged a few words and kicked my ass to get some speed to pass him strong!! WOO HOO!! I LOVE the sound of that!!

My belly hurt the entire time on the bike, and I tried all kinds of crazy positions on the bike to help. I tried to eat clif bloks on the bike too, which were good, but I threw up 4 times anyway. My poor bike guy is gonna have pee AND puke to clean off this time!! :(
What would you do differently?:

Push harder...go faster
Transition 2
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

FINALLY saw my parents and kids at this point!! My dad yelled 'WHOOP WHOOP" and my kids were holding signs and screaming!! Almost made me cry!!
What would you do differently?:

Move my slow tail faster.
Run
  • 1h 28m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 14m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I ended up walking the first 3 miles. I tried to run out of transition, and just couldn't. My belly felt like it was gonna explode. I hurt while I walked, but it was manageable. I saw Shannon holding up a "Move your Butt" sign...and wished I could at that point!! Saw Rich kicking butt running it home, got a high five. Saw Mike somewhere along and he told me he had been puking too!! Great a new family tradition!!

At mile 2 I was bent over puking and a TNT girl stopped and asked me if I wanted some Tums. Heaven sent girl she was!! I took 2, thanked her and continued to plod along. By mile 4 I was feeling a bit better, so went to a 2/2 run/walk. Not spectacular, but at least I was moving faster. By mile 5 I was REALLY hot and tired of being out there and just wanted to be done! I ran with Renee for a bit, then stopped to puke again. At mile 6 I had enough! I was gonna run HARD to the finish, no matter what!! I did!! Crossed the finish line with my kids on either side, and proceeded to puke right on a camera man. Got drug into the medical tent and put on a cot. I had to fuss a bit to get out of getting an IV, but finally got out and went to find my family and friends.
What would you do differently?:

Carry Tums??!!
Post race
Warm down:

Stood with my kids and family for a bit, then went to the BT spot to say hello. Had some food and a massage, then the most awesome shower in the entire world!! Isn't it amazing how spectacular a shower feels after a race??!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My crazy belly.

Event comments:

Awesome race!! Very well put together, and a great time! The 4 days of BT parties were even more amazing this year!! It just gets better and better!! :) It was awesome to meet so many new people this year, including RON, and catch up with the crew from last year!!

GOOD TIMES BABY, GOOD TIMES!! :)

I can't tell you how elated I am that I was not around when you upchucked on the run! Kinda' funny that we kept passing each other for about 20 minutes before realizing "Hey, I know that person!"

Way to gut it out and get in there and swim! We all have fears; facing down those fears is what makes us who we are.

Sorry about your tummy issues Wendi! But I'll have to keep that Tums tip in mind for my ocean swim races

Way to stick it out though! (Hey weren't the birds following you last year in the water at this race, too? That was a memorable RR!)

Rock star princesses get in the water when it's choppy.  You did.  And you made it.    YA, MULE!!!

As always, it was a fantastic weekend - from the pre-race social stuff to the race weekend to the post-race silver, raspberry, whatever.  I'm still not getting out of my seat, unless it's to get my picture taken with cheese.  Good times, baby, good times.

Wendy, spectacular race.  As Rick said above, you gained lots of BT cred just for getting into that choppy water.  That was one rough swim and you knocked it out in spite of your fears.

Can you say, "boobies"?

P.S.  Rick, I think you're referring to the "Pink Dragon".

Great job, pushing yourself to start that race when you really didn't want to.  That is a great positive to take away from your race.  Great job!  Also ... I don't think I've puked that much in the last 10 years ... total!  Of course, I haven't inhaled half of Tampa Bay lately either!  Good job, Wendi!

At one of our tri club meetings last year, they gave a shirt to one of the guys who is known for having, let us say, a delicate stomach...

It said: "GO AHEAD AND PUKE, IT TASTES LIKE CHICKEN!"

OK, no more puke jokes..

Seriously, I am sorry to hear you had so much trouble w/the tummy! You think it's due to swallowing water in the swim, or something else? Hope you get it sorted out because you don't want that to become your race trademark!

Wish I was able to be there and cheer you on as you and your family did for me last year..great job!

I think next year your goal shouldn't be to beat your time, but to beat the # of times you puked. I think you and Mike should have a friendly bet next year about who can puke less. I'm glad you decided to do the swim and be brave. You go girl! Anyways, another fun time w/ ya'll. Wish we coulda stayed longer on Sunday, but we didn't end up getting home til like 11 pm. I was beyond exhausted. Good luck at your races this weekend!!

Great race Wendi!  I was worried about you on the swim, but you hung in and toughed it out!  Now that you've done that swim, there's nothing you can't do.

Way to finish it strong and run it in hard.  Lots of fun to see you and everyone else again.

Let's do it again next year!
