Sunny
Total Time = 2h 40m 8s
Overall Rank = 890/3030
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 75/173
Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4:15. Drank one cup of coffee and I was off to the race site.
Event warmup:

Ran to the swim start because Ron and I were late. We were in the 4th wave and the first 2 had gone by the time we got there and got our chips.
Swim
  • 26m 15s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 45s / 100 meters
Comments:

I positioned myself in the back of the wave. Start was great. I passed alot of people. Alot of people hit/pulled on me, but it did not bother me at all. Half way to the first turn, I started freaking out again. The waves were big, I was all alone, and it appeared as though I would never make it to the first turn. Did some breast stroke to try to calm down. It didn't work. This feeling lasted until half way through the cross leg. Felt great on the back leg until I looked up and realized that I was WAY off course. There were no swimmers anywhere near me. I was way off to the right. This cost me some time.
What would you do differently?:

Navigate better. Maybe start closer to the front.
Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Spent some time in T1 with dry heaves. Don't know where those came from. Never threw up, just gagging alot.
What would you do differently?:

Leave shoes on bike. Not get nauseated.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 23s
  • 25.1 miles
  • 19.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Just after the brick road, I was getting up to speed and shifting to large chainring when the chain fell off. Got it back on quickly and I was off. My HR was high for the speed I was going. Never could get it down. The course was very flat and at times I was going 23, but my HR was in the high 170s,low 180s. I knew I could not maintain this for 1hr+, so I slowed to ~20mph. Don't know why my HR was so high. A few weeks ago I averaged ~18mph for 70 miles on a flat course and my HR was in the low 140s. Consumed approx 220 cal.

Got passed my ~60 people in my age group!
What would you do differently?:

Ride more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Don't know why my transition was so slow. I did put on socks.
What would you do differently?:

Not put on socks. Run faster.
Run
  • 53m 11s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

I deliberately went out slow. First mile approx 9 min pace. 9.10 for next two, then I picked it up a little for the last 3.2. Felt great the whole time. The frist 3 were a little too comfortable. Got water at each station for my head. Drank a little also. Plenty of gas in the tank at the end.

Passed 4 people :(
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Massage. Hung out with the awesome BTer!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor swim navigation and limited bike training/skill.

Event comments:

PR by 19 minutes.

So here's the race report.  Killer PR - congrats!  Any idea why your HR was so high the whole time?  Better get that sucker to calm down in the next few weeks.  12 hours of 180 might cause something to blow.

Dude, you had an AWESOME race.  That's one hell of a PR.

Way to massively negative split the run!  That's hard to do, and you did it in style.

It was a great weekend indeed.  Definitely have to do this again soon.

A PR in those conditions forebodes a great season ... and means your training is on the right path.  Those early morning rides on the SC and Silk Sheets are paying dividends.

Congratulations!
