Pre-race routine:

I flew in from Germany the day before. It took me 22.5 hours to get home and two lay overs. Went to bed early, but did not sleep well due tot he time change. Got up at 5:45! Which is 45 minutes after I wanted to. Rushed into clothes and took off for the race. Drove very fast! Parked at my friend Louis's house and walked over. Did not have any breakfast due to time. Just one diet Pepsi.
Event warmup:

Walked/jogged to the race site about 1.5 miles. Used the port-john and retied my shoes. Saw Jennifer, Scottie and Alan before the race.

Comments:

My back was achy, perhaps from the plane ride and a bad night's sleep. I kept the pace easy for the first three miles and the first 5 miles went well. After that I tightened up all over. I tried to keep my upper body relaxed, but my neck hamstrings and left knee just kept pounding me.

I was deep in the pain cave when I saw Tracy rooting from the sidelines. It was great to see a friendly face.

Was glad to finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not race unprepared. My runs have been so much better the previous weeks so I think I can figure out what happened here.
Post race
Warm down:

It was crowded after the finish. I had a beer, a water, and half a banana and then laid down for a few minutes. Then I dragged myself to my feet. I had to pick up my kids from Sunday school. My left shin was SUPER tight!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep and travel.

Shake it off.  Your training has been going very well.  One less than stellar race can't change that fact!  Forge on.

What they all said.  Considering the travel, time change, lack of good rest, no breakfast, I think you did an amazing job.  Carry on.

Chalk it up as a good training run and move on.  You had a better showing than Duke this week (and they didn't fly nearly as far).

Great attitude Doug!  You planned for a training run and got it done.  Overseas travel is killer on the body clock and overall chemistry.  All things considered you did awesome!

The best advice I have for you is it was a great mental training day for Florida when your body will hurt, you'll be tired, and you still move forward.  Keep remembering this feeling during your visualizing sessions and make it work to your advantage.

Sounds rough Doug! Yikes. But yeah, good training for Florida!

Memo to Doug: No international trips before your big A-race later this year!
