So last night I was showing my wife a few famous finishes at ironmans at kona. The Crawl, blazeman, etc.. She says to me that I have to do that Ironman so we can go to hawaii. I started laughing telling her about qualifing and all that jazz. She responds with that i'd have to start training for the IM. I decided that since she has no clue about how much training and time goes into that its her fault if i decide to start training more after this season is done so i can do a HIM next summer then a 140 the next. Ignorance truly is bliss sometimes right?

IM Louisville is 159days away and not full as of yet.

You are more than welcome to join us. lol

My wife was stunned as well to the amount of training the first time I did the IM. But as a present this year she signed me up again so it must have not been to much.

My wife entered me in the Kona lottery last year.....so when my name got drawn and I had to train like mad she had no one to blame but herself. She did get a pretty nice trip out of it and I had the time of my life racing. Now I want to try to get back but as a qualifier. Look what she started!

Not my wife, she KNOWS women do triathlon, and couldn't care less.....she works out 4 or 5 days a week, but she thinks triathlon is boring.

She's got horses, I stay away from them. I think riding an animal around a ring is mind numbing and dumb.

with you on that one....my wife always says" we are going to hawaii if you qualify" as if I am worrying about qualifying. I try to tell her I would be fortunate to finish when I attempt one, that qualifying is not a reality" at least for now

That's funny.  It would be much cheaper and easier to just go to Hawaii on your own (even if you go during IM time to watch).  But hey, if it works to your advantage then go for it!

My wife loves going to Hawaii so I've done this race twice.  It's a great way to experience the conditions and the island.  The swim is further up the coast but is still a beautiful ocean swim, the bike course is the same north half as the IM which includes the climb to Hawi.  The run is around a golf resort including a fair amount of running on the grass fairways but like the IM is very hot.

Not me. I love Kona and the Big Island. It's the only place I have visited that I think I would rather live than where Im currently living.

I also loved the Big Island.  I'd go back in a heartbeat (although I wouldn't want to live there).  But I'd rather hike then sit on the beach sipping Mai-Tai's.

Kona during IM week is a fantastic experience even if you aren't racing!  My Kona 2011 volunteer/spectator report

You all misunderstand. For a vacation I would still choose Maui as I love the rainforest and the amazing beaches (Hawaii is seriously lacking really good beaches). To live, I would be in Kauai which is very remote and has the most unspoiled natural beauty. I have been all over the Big Island and it's fine but there are better choices for a vacation that doesn't involve the race and have better natural beauty.

Hiking on Kuai was unreal. Would go there again in a second. Have to agree with Bryan though on sipping Mai Tais in Maui

You're just not patient enough.  Give the Big Island about a million or so years to fully develop like the other islands and you'll be wishing you retired there.

I've been to limited areas of Maui and the Big Island. The truth is that unless you lived there, you'd never get a chance to see all the beautiful things there. Beaches on the Big Island are full of force and power...it's earth in the making. Hot lava spilling into the ocean creating more island...how cool is that? ON the north end you have fog, mist, green fields, waterfalls and more magnificent powerful beaches (just not the white sandy kind that stretch for miles). Fresh papaya, mango, avocado, lime, lemons and more can be found at every market. Wonderful place. Did I mention whales?

I would happily take any residence of any size on any of the islands I have visited (Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kaui). All have their unique features. Even Honolulu, where I lived for two years in grad school, is very nice for a city--fascinating neighborhoods, great local sports and cultural scene, and rainforest right out of town (Tantalus). Kona is nice but I'm a small-town girl and actually I like the rain and small-town atmosphere of Hilo and that side of the island in general. Kona side is too hot. I could always pop over to Kona to train and race. Anyone have a few million lying around, or a house in Hawaii, that they don't want?Cool Otherwise it will have to wait until (if) I retire and have time to try to qualify. Maybe the 80+ category will be less competitive, and by that time, maybe I'll like biking enough to train for it.
