Total Time = 1h 31m 8s
Overall Rank = 264/1067
Age Group = f30-34
Age Group Rank = 108/128
Pre-race routine:

Rise & shine early. THANKS to Adam (Gearwhore) for picking me up at the hotel :) Cup of coffee and a double decker PBJ for breakfast - then hydrate. FIRST one in my age group in the transition area so I had a good set up. Followed shortly by Stacey and Shannon so I got to be right next to them :) Chatted around a bit then vegged on the grass for a little trying to relax. It was great to see everyone - Ben, Dan Mike (although I didn't get to really talk to him cause I was needing my veg time!) Ryan, Mark, Stacey and Shannon were all there :)
Event warmup:

Short jog with Shannon and Stacey to get the blood flowing. Final potty stop, then a little swim warmup to get used to the water and make sure the wetsuit felt good, which it did :) Swam maybe 200 yds.
Swim
  • 13m 29s
  • 750 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

I went out great, but the last couple hundred yards seemed to last forever. IT was tough once I caught the wave in front of me because they were the tail end swimmers from that wave and they were kinda all over the place... I had trouble sightinginto the sun on the first leg, but thankfully I swam pretty straight.
What would you do differently?:

Train more...
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

My actual transition was fast - very fast for me, but still some room for improvement. I got a little caught up with the wetsuit and also trying to open a hammer gel shot. I also hung up just a tad getting on to my bike at the mount area which was after the official transition.
What would you do differently?:

practice more - get my helmet and shoes on at the same time - have my gel already open.
Bike
  • 50m 47s
  • 17 miles
  • 20.09 mile/hr
Comments:

I guess this is what happens when you ignore your biking to run more... It was definately my weak link today. I struggled and felt like I was pushing it, but I really wanted to average 22 mph and could barely muster 20. I would back off if I felt my legs burning because I was trying to save something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Train more... (recurring theme?) and just push the whole damned time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 53s
Comments:

I could have been just a touch quicker if not for 2 things - someone else's bike was in my rack... so I just kind of tossed it over and stuck mine where I needed to and I could have been taking my helmet off just a touch sooner while getting my shoes settled. Overall though not bad.
What would you do differently?:

Get my helmet off while running with the bike (at least unstrap the chin and get ready to take it off while I'm racking)
Run
  • 24m 33s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I think I could have started to push a litle earlier and maybe would have caught the 3 women that finished about :30 in front of me. By the time I tried to push, I was too hot and I would have had to push a little too hard. I'm not saying I went out too slow, but I should have picked it up at the top of the hill until waiting until mile 1 to pace and 1.5 to hit lt. Probably obvious from my HR data too.
What would you do differently?:

Push it almost immediately. I was trying to be careful not to kill myself on the hill, but I think I could have paced sooner.
Post race
Warm down:

jogged with the kids after stretching (and drinking a beer with the BT crew :) ). Full bottle of Recoverite

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training...

Event comments:

I guess now I know that you really can't leave anything on the table at a sprint. When I was riding I would back off when I felt a little too much burn in my legs. I need to push harder if I want to compete in sprints :)

Hey, I think those are all really respectable times.  But yeah, if you hold anything back at a Sprint, you just get to the end and feel like you should have pushed harder.  Oh well, now you've done that, and you'll know next time.  Nice race.

I was wondering why it was so hot out there; I was apparently behind you, and I must have been running through the heat left by your after-burners. Great job this morning. You were flying!

I noticed that we both have the same problem coming up -- the Triple Bypass. I've been assigned #21, so kick me as you fly past this time!

I'm glad we had our little talk at Saturday's lunch about you being able to go sub-8-minute miles! Even though it wasn't under 24', you still looked pretty good on the run and it looks like a pretty solid race throughout.

That was a SOLID race Julia!  The fun of triathlon is trying to go faster next time.  Hope you're psyched about doing so well in your first sprint!
