Subject: My neighbor was killed on her bike...

I am in utter shock and disbelief right now. 2 weeks ago there were 2 women cyclists killed in Newport Beach by hit-and-run drivers in two days. Of course I was very saddened to hear of these...

Just an hour ago I learned that the woman killed on Newport Coast Drive was my neighbor, Dr. Catherine “Kit” Campion Ritz of Irvine.

I knew her as "Kit"...we met through our dogs! Walking them that is. While our dogs have never gotten along, we'd always stop and talk for a bit. She and her husband were avid cyclists. They'd go for rides most every weekend. She'd ask me about my son, as everyone in the neighborhood knows him for his baseball. She watched him go from a 4th grader playing catch with me in our little neighbor park to a high school player and now playing college ball as a freshman. Then as I got into triathlons last year, we'd talk about rides, races, etc.

She was always such a kind and warm person. So friendly. I feel horrible that I didn't know it was her as I've seen Pat, her husband, walking their dog Sandy a few times over the past week or so; I said "hi" etc., but not much more. I can't believe it...I just feel so bad about it...I didn't know!

I guess I'm using this as an outlet. I am just so shocked...

It doesn't sound like she did anything wrong...was in the bike lane, with her husband on a mid-morning ride. Was hit from behind and died a short time later at the hospital.

I understand they have arrested a suspect.

A celebration of life will be held at 1pm this Saturday, Oct 6 at Mariner's Church in Irvine.

A horribly tragic reminder to be safe out there...

Well, that just sucks.

Give her family condolences from the BT community - if I may speak for BT.

May certainly add this BTer's condolences.

Tragic when a motorist so senselessly snuffs out a vibrant & active human life.

From the article and comments, it seems like she was a caring and well respected doctor and a lovely lady.

condolences to her family, and to the OP as well.

I read the article in the Orange County Register.  Shared it with some fellow cyclists at work.  So sad.  Prayers for her family and you as well.

So sorry.  It's always sad to hear about but it's definitely harder when you know the person and you know you ride the same roads as them and such.

I'm very sorry for your loss.  Having it hit close to home is deeply unnerving.  She sounds like she was a remarkable person.

I'm so sorry to hear that.  Three of my friends were hit by a hit and run driver last week while they were running.  One died at the scene.  This nonsense is becoming all to common.

sorry to hear of anyone getting hit/hurt/killed while doing what they love and so often not their fault.  As car drivers we need to realise we are driving a steel killing machine - as much as a cyclist may p*ss us off occasionally they are totally unprotected....

That's someone's wife/mother/sister/daughter - it's not just a cyclist.

Condolences.

I'm sorry for your community's loss.  it is especially unnerving when its so close to  home. As a previous poster wrote, just off er your condolences.  Maybe offer to take care of the dog if they need to attend to business.

I don't know if its just that we can all report this more easily, but it seems to be getting worse. Please stay safe folks, bike defensively, choose safe roads, ride with a buddy if possible.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and thoughts.

It's quite a tragic reminder that you just don't know when it's your time. I've been taking an "inventory" on what's truly important and really appreciating those people around me.

As primarily a solo cyclist, I'm going to try to do some group rides each week and limit the solo rides as much as possible.

Thanks again everyone; be safe!
