I'm furious. I finally get cleared by the orthopedic surgeon to bike again, have the bike serviced and pick it up today, and now I'm not going to be able to get outside and ride. It's a conspiracy!

Stopped at Wal-Mart on the way to pick up my son, I needed a couple things and my ex wanted a case of water. The entire aisle was empty except for about 6 cases of the 'premium' bottled water. People are crazy. I have a case of beer, I'm set.

And it could knock out power for days and weeks....thus effecting the election due to many places voting electronically, getting to the polls, etc.

Wasn't Katrina blamed on Bush.

This one has Romney written all over it.

Power outages from fallen trees on power lines are the main concern for me (southern Vermont), so I'm making sure the candles, matches and flashlights are readily accessible. Also making sure the coolers are clean and there is ice so I can keep food from spoiling if (when) the power goes out.

+1

But I'm not worried about my food lol.

My biggest concern is missing out on my Monday night and Wendsday night runs.

I'm right under one of the two teal lines, but far enough inland that I'm only worried about rain and maybe some snow if it's hitting around Atlantic City.  If we get hit directly, it should be just rain and wind.  If it hits in the mid-Atlantic, they are forcasting the merging storm will yield snow in the Appalachians.  Close enough to me that I'm worried.

I read a neat description yesterday - snor'eastercane.

Yeah; I drove to Montreal about 2 weeks post Irene and it was brutal. Off the bridges on I-91 and 89, you could see the devastation. Unreal.

Buying a generator was nuts today! Home Depot had none, Sears had none. I went to Lowes and the parking lot was swimming with lumber flat carts loaded with generators; had to be 20 of them being loaded. I asked a guy how many we're left. He told me 24. By the time I got to the aisle, there was 1 pallet of 6 remaining. I just bought one; didn't check specs or anything. By e time I got a cart, 2 were in front of me leaving only 3 left to buy. Crazy run on them. Had to be at least $30,000 of generators in the parking lot during e 10 minutes I was there.

Why do people buy water? It comes out of the tap for freak sake. Fill some jugs at home!! lolz. If the store's outta bottled water, just buy some large container. Then fill it. With tap water.

Maryland always jumps the gun on storms. As a kid there, I must've missed 6-8 school days from jumping the gun on snowstorms that didn't materialize.

And they always hit the booze.

I'm hoping for a big hit so insurance companies stop hammering Florida since we haven't had a hurricane since 2005 and really it's not been a typical thing that FL gets hurricanes until the last 20 years or so. Houston to Pensacola always got them but FL on historical tracks was rather minimal.

Except in NJ most of us wouldn't be covered because we don't have flood and/or hurricane insurance (i live practically in the center of NJ NJ why would I) so i'm SOL with insurance - acts of God and all...

This is why we have generators -yes plural!

I did my normal Saturday food shopping. Hit Trader Joe's at 8am when they open and usually get home by 8:20. I'm a very organized shopper and it's about 6 blocks from my house.

Usually there are about 5 people waiting for the store to open. This morning the parking lot was full. Total bedlam. I saw a man and women carrying 3 cases of down the street. It's really funny to see how people react.

We live in the middle of a big city, all the power lines are buried. My house has stood here for 153 years, I just don't see the apocalypse happening on Tuesday. Worst thing that happens is we can't get pizza delivered.

I'm not super worried if things go bad...I've got provisions and plenty of food stocked in the pantry, water jugs filled, batteries, candles, etc.

Plus my parents have a whole house generator if the isht gets real.

BUT

I am scheduled for a transatlantic flight out of Newark, NJ on THURSDAY morning. It's super, super important that I be in Scotland by the 2nd. Like, ridiculously important. United won't re-route me just yet because nothing has happened...but I cannot be stuck here. I will fly the *other* way...go all the way to LA and then over Asia to get there, if that's what it takes. But it looks like the most likely would be that I fly from PIT to Dallas, then to London, then figure out how to get from London to Glasgow or Prestwick or Edinburgh. Or go in to Manchester and do the same thing. Or go to Amsterdam and figure it out from there.

Or, I could fly to Dublin, take the train from Dublin to Belfast then to Larne, ferry from Larne to Troon then take the train from Troon to Edinburgh. That would suuuucccccckkkk. But at least I'd be there.

Or everything could be fine and I'm totes overracting.

All I know is that my stress level, which was already high, is at mach 10.

I was at the liquor store this afternoon and there was a guy in line wondering the same thing out loud. He said (and you have to imagine this in a classic Brooklyn accent) "Hey, last time I checked, water falls from the sky in a hurricane. Vodka doesn't."

Fill the tub with water too. If things really go to pot and water goes out, you can flush toilets manually.

Heh Heh. Just bought 6 gallons. Already filled our containers. Will fill the sinks/tubs when the storm comes. Canned soup, bread, candles...WE will be OK, I'd like to be able to offer some for our neighbors if need be.

My Mom in NJ shore is not afraid of the storm where they expect it to land. She said her house is "the party house" for the neighbors to ride it out. Here in South VT we are not so complacent.

I live near Jen (Arttemis) but my county has not canceled school for tomorrow that I know of.   I went to the grocery store for a few things and was overwhelmed with the masses filling up gas tanks at the gas station (in case the stations lose power and we can't get any)....people already stocking up on ice and such.  We got a generator after Irene came through causing us to be without power 8 days.  As long as we don't lose cable too we'll be fine to continue life as usual.  Loss of cable means I have to drive to the office.

My friends in eastern PA are posting all over FB about colleges and school districts closed up there already.

My parents bought a generator after Irene as well...thought it would just turn into an expensive garage ornament.  But within a few months they had used it again when some big storm knocked out power to their area for several days.  I think they've used it at least one other time since then too.  It's actually coming in very handy!  And now they have it in case this storm takes the power out again. :D  They live about an hour from NYC.

I dunno...all of this pre-emptive shutting down and cancellations...seems a bit overkill.  We'll see what actually pans out, but this definitely seems almost like overreacting....

I live in the southern outer banks and we have been getting waves since friday. We haven't had any damage. The outer banks on the other hand have gotten hammered. At least one house has already fallen in the ocean in Rodanthe and the ocean has crossed the highway.

Schools are cancelled tomorrow pretty much in the whole state of Maryland.

Just cool and windy here in Baltimore...about 50 miles east is awful.  And we haven't even started yet. Surprised

I am completely unimpressed with Hurricane Sandy.  Being originally from Indiana, I have seen weak thunderstorms pack a bigger wallop.

I will admit, however, that I am tired of the cold rain being blown by chilly winds... I wanna go for a run!

I have a friend running the NYC Marathon and I've got my fingers x'd that NYC isn't hit too hard. That's a big event to organize...I can't imagine the chaos of cleaning up a city and trying to put on a race.

If a storm and/or flooding compromises the water lines, water gets shut off by the counties/municipalities/whomever controls your water. We were out of water for about 4 days after Isaac in August due to water line breaks & contamination. Glad we had gallons of water. Being without power for a week is hard enough, being without running water makes it exponentially worse.
