Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Costco copied the SAMS setup or vice versa, I really don't care, but I am curious of why people choose Costco over SAMS? My family uses SAMS and have for many years, but I had read some posts on here (I think) about the great deals at Costco. So, we were out to eat a month ago in Omaha, and decided we would go look into the big savings at Costco and to see what they had available. Comparing Omaha Costco to Omaha SAMS, we found the Costco was more expensive on almost every item that we would normally purchase. And they didn't carry some of the same things that we did purchase. I am sure that there are other things that are not available the other way around also. We found the fruits/vegetables/shrimp were all higher priced and not of any better quality. The meat prices were higher, but we don't buy much red meat. This is not a slam on them at all, just curious if it was just the Omaha location that was that different. It was a very busy place, so it wasn't like it was going to go under because of no business.

Sensei ![]() | ![]() It's been years since I went to a costco and only recently started going to Sam's (someone added us to their account). But back in the day, I seem to remember I gave the edge to Costco for some reason. Just like their selection a bit more I think. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've been a member of both, and found the prices to be pretty competitive between the two. I found that Costco has much higher quality things like meat. Selection on "nicer" items (computers, HDTVs, furniture, etc.) also appeared better. Costco is also typically listed as a place that treats their employees well, and Sams is, well, Wal Mart. YMMV. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SAMS doesn't exist in Canada, or at least it doesn't in Vancouver so the only option for when I was living there was Costco. Now that I'm in Chicago it comes down to proximity - there isn't a SAMS in the city that I know of, and there are 2 Costco locations that are fairly easy to get to on the L train, or we can rent a Zipcar for an hour to get all the shopping done. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We looked into CostCo once (long time Sam's members) and I think the membership was more expensive. Since they seemed pretty much the same, we just stuck with Sam's. I would say other than the membership, we also chose based on location. P.S. and Sam's is on the bike path with a path connecting it and everything! Edited by BikerGrrrl 2013-02-01 1:24 PM |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jlruhnke - 2013-02-01 2:08 PM I go to Costco because it isn't wal-mart. ^^^This and because apparently Costco has one of the best business models for management/employee relations. I don't know exacts but it's something like top mangement won't earn X more than the lowest wage employee. Their cashiers are some of the highest paid in the industry, shockingly all w/out a union. Oh, and their stuff is just better |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() BJ's...
My issue with Costco is the lack of lines. The major one in Sacramento only has 6 lanes, and only 2/3rds are ever open. At a busy time, lines would be halfway to the back of the store. My BJ's has something like 25 lanes.
It's been a while since I've been in a Sam's, but electronics seem to always be cheaper at Costco (and just about identical at BJ's) |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Costco, hands-down for me. I guess it depends on what you buy there, but I find the stuff at Costco is higher quality (higher quality meat, more organic foods, more choices). Their electronics and other stuff are definitely higher quality than what you'd get at Sam's - I bought an SLR camera and leather couches there over the past few years, and those items alone payed for my membership many times over with what I saved. I also like the Kirkland branded stuff - clothes, toiletries, office supplies. |

BJ's in 84. PACE also started in 83. The only reason I remember them was that my parents had a membership with them in the mid 80s. It was in Allen Park. We lived just west of Ann Arbor. It was way too far of a drive lol (like 40 miles each way). |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm not usually much for "causes"....but I wouldn't step foot in a store that had anything to do with Wal-Mart ownership. In fact, I'd be fine with every Wal-Mart and Sam's store in the country spontaneously combusting. Costco for us. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been a member of Sams and currently a member of Costco. It has been several years since I have gone to Sams so I am not sure if this is even an accurate statement anymore. It seemed to us that Costco had more consumer items and Sams had more business ones. Costco gave us more choices in food products and office products that we use. I really like their electronics selection and service. I have purchased four TVs over the years and numerous other electronics items and have had very good service with Costco. I am biased against the Walton empire; but would stick with Costco either way. |

Price Club actually came first, which was merged/bought out/bought Costco in 93. So I'd say that they all "copied" Price Club. I'm a BJs guy myself... mainly because one of my buddies was the GM of the store by me. He is no longer there but I just kinda stuck with it. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() SAMs for me only because of location. Costco is an hour away, SAMs is just 10 mins over the border (assuming there is no line up or hassle at customs) Combine the location and the savings of cross border shopping... Saving over a dollar a gallon on gas more than makes up for bridge fares to get over there... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We joined Costco lately bc we heard they had better produce and a larger organic selection. They have really good meat and fish although it's a little hit or miss on cuts etc. I've never been in a Sams. Do they stock much in fresh fruit/ veggies esp organic stuff? We go through cases of apple sauce and frozen peaches in what seems like days. I even got my daughter a ski coat which she gets a ton of complements on. Oh and after years of looking for a ski helmet that I liked the fit of I found one at Costco. Granted we keep thinking we need paper towels and have enough to fill a small bedroom when we really need toilet paper. We just found out a warehouse club store is moving to our town but they have not said which one. |
