Pre-race routine:

Ate our usual pasta the night before. Was going to get to bed early, but as always, couldn't get my stuff together till 11, so finally got to go to sleep at 11:30.

Got up at 3:30. Had oatmeal, OJ, and coffee. We had everything ready, so we left the house at about 4:40.

Got to Boulder about 5:30 (the traffic on the diagonal took about 15 mins to get through) We still were on time. It was really nice to have about 45 mins to get ready and then time to warm up in the water before my wave.

Put sunscreen and body glide on, made sure my t1 and t2 stuff was layed out in the most efficient way, had plenty of time for the bathroom break, rode my bike around to make sure that the gears shifted well and to put it in the ride gear, put my wet suit on, ate a gu at about 6:15, went off to the beach

Coming to the race on time is the way to go!
Event warmup:

A couple laps on my bike around the parking lot and 200m swim
Swim
  • 38m 45s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

The start felt really crowded. I kept getting run over and running into people who were slower than me (not sure why - there were only 3 women in my AG slower than me :) I guess, th 25-29 AG must have lots of slow swimmers too)

I drifted about 100 yards to the right of the bouys and the crowds. It was perfect for the first 3rd of the swim, as we were swimming directly into the sun, and I could not see the course at all. I breathe on my left side, so by swimming of to the right I could see other swimmers and didn't have to navigate myself.

However it didn't work quite as well for the whole swim. I rounded the first bouy way too far and stayed really far off the bouys for the remaining swim. I tried to get back to the left, but because I naturally curve to the right when I swim, it was hard and I never corrected myself until the finish.

I think I would have swam a couple minutes faster if I didn't increase my distance by so much, because my stroke felt comfortable and relaxed the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to navigate better and not swim out off course. Practice more OWS
Transition 1
  • 01m 54s
Comments:

Great transition, at least I am getting fast at something :)
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to learn how to put my bike shoes on while I ride, but I can live without this skill for now
Bike
  • 1h 23m 32s

  • 18.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Great bike for me. I haven't been doing as good on my bike in the races, so I am happy to finally break the 18mph barrier, on a hilly course too.

Ate a gu right after the start of the bike. Started out pretty agressive on the hill. Good and steady pace up Old Stage, I got up in my sadle a few times, but maybe not as much as I should have. I switched to the granny gear for just the steepest portion of the hill (.5 mile). The fan support was really good too, and that helped as well.

That hill is not as hard as people make it to be. Yeah, it hurts, but only for a short time, and the harder you push the shorter it is. Next year I think I can climb it faster.

I almost got caught speeding :) I didn't expect to see the cops where they were, had to slam the breaks.

I pushed hard throught the downhills and was in the 30's a lot. Just got in my most aero position (drop bars) and kept pushing.

Did great on rolling hills and the diagonal (faster than on training ride a week ago)
What would you do differently?:

I would stand up in my saddle more to climb faster up the Old Stage.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

I ran into the wrong row, but quickly corrected. Still that probably cost me 10sec. Other than that good t2
What would you do differently?:

remember better where i am parked
Run
  • 48m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Kept good steady pace right off the gate. Felt good - definitely much better than at L2L or the 1/2 last year.

Ate a gu at the beginning of the run. Tried to concentrate on staying cool. Drank a sip of water at every station and poured some over my head too.

Went even faster in the second half after some girl passed who I didn't want to pass me (I got her fast!)
In the last couple miles there were a couple people who kept pushing me, so my finish was good.
What would you do differently?:

I just should have been faster. I'd like to see a 46 on this next year. Maybe more speed work and bricks would help
Post race
Warm down:

Cold towel at the finish line was great, but even better were the beers!
I stretched a little bit, since I am supposed to and went straight for the beer tent, where it was nice to hang out with some BTers

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Horrible swim navigation mostly. Bike and run speed needs to be improved upon with more specific training, but I am happy with them at this stage

Event comments:

Free beers rock!

Nice race! This is the first year you did the Peak, right? I'd expect that next year, knowing the course at a race effort you'll do even better!
