Comments:

The volunteers were fabulous!! The "sweeper" stayed with me, as I was the last one. He was so kind, and didn't make me feel like a fat, old lady. The organizers were upbeat and fun, and the prizes were excellent! I am amazed that only 20 people came out for this tough trail race. It is touted as "the toughest 5K in the North Country" and it is!!
What would you do differently?:

Do lots more hills and trail running to prepare!!! My sister is an excellent runner and she runs trails and she won the womens' category in 27 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I am fat and old.

Event comments:

Great race for the tough. I don't know if I will do it again, but if you like a challenge, this is the race for you!!!

Performance: Good
HR went super high during some of the crazy climbs - I had to stop and gasp for breath.
Course: First part of the race was ridiculously technical. Roots, trees down, rocks. Then you came out onto a log road, which is where I actually face planted. Got up, then down a service hill and back up the same road. Then back onto a fairly technical trail, all the way down, and then all the way back up. This is where I almost had to crawl up a few times! It was incredibly steep! I was gasping for breath. Seriously. I run hills in training, but I was no match for this! The last part of the trail wasn't too bad - just had to watch your feet. At no point in this race could you take your eyes off of the trail. Even the easy parts had rocks, and you had to watch.

I don't care if I'm first, last, or in between. A day running on trails is a very good day. It looks like you enjoyed it, so huge win there. Congrats on getting through a tough one.

Yes, in retrospect, it was fun, but I didn't think so when I was about to puke from gasping for breath so hard!!!

It was a beautiful day out there, so it ended up being a great experience!

Hi,
I have come in DFL the last few races, so I am getting used to it!! At least people stayed around at this race and were very nice about cheering me in!!! Same with the Race The Train in North Creek in August.
Thanks for reading the report!

It is so awesome that you tackled this with your sister.  Major kudos for completing "the toughest 5K in the North Country."

Felicia has done a lot of trail races and she'll be a good resource for you.

Bravo for tackling something so daunting and sticking it out to the end! I think, for most of us, races are about the experience...and this sounds like an awesome one Laughing

I can train for half marathons on pavement and on trails, but as soon as I change it up to gravel or loose dirt my knee swells and the pain it causes is unreal. Any ideas why this happens?

Well I said that I was not going to do it this season, but I cracked. I broke down and bought a new bike. I went out and bought a shiny new Cannondale road bike.
