I'm in! Shooting for 100. Still working on the plan. Most likely be 4 days per week running with a long run on Saturdays. Will be using a HR to keep me from going to fast on the easy and long runs with one run per week on the faster side. Looking forward to the New Year!

All right, I am IN! I have no idea if I can make it but last month I was sick for an entire week and ran around 84 miles. Did nothing that week. So, should be doable. Guessing I will just eek by and get the 100 miles in. Taking a 5 day trip so will try to get ahead of this and start adding extra mileage the first week. I typically average about 22 miles per week in my off-season, so nothing crazy. This is fun and I am excited you started this! Thanks for opening it up to the group!

Thanks again for starting this challenge, Dale!

Were you thinking we would check in daily or just post a summary each week?

I'll give this a go. Since I've gotten more serious with weight lifting, the mileage for my runs has lagged. We'll see if I can up the mileage and still balance the two. IN for now!

I will try to check the thread every day to respond to any questions/concerns and will post a weekly tally every Monday.

Anyone can post at any time here. This should be a place to go to brag, whine or ask for help. Or just tell how your run went that day-especially if remarkable.

Lets be supportive and all achieve our goal.

I am just getting to our vaca hotel and looking forward to a run in temps 50 degrees warmer than home.

I'm in for 100. I hit 100+ the last six months in a row and want to keep the streak going. This challenge should help.

With the challenge starting tomorrow, I'm wondering if I should revise my goal of 150 or just keep doing what I've been doing.  I had a great December with 151 miles which included some speedwork and some strength work.   Longest runs were 11 miles.  Since I'm building for a marathon March 1st should I slow it down a bit and get more miles in?   I took the month off from swimming and the last two weeks from biking.  I will start riding again but only three trainer sessions a week from 45 - 60 minutes and at least two swims.  I'm willing to put in as much time and effort as it takes but want to be smart about it too.

Steve
If you are cautious and build slowly-even while adding time in all three disciplines, you'll probably be ok.
There will probably will be a point where you will need to cut back.
Keep your plan and be flexible and ready to cut back at some point when your body shows signs you need more rest.

It depends on what your marathon goals are. If you are just in to finish then you are fine keeping your miles where they are and continuing speed wrok as well. 150 miles per month is a good base to have a good time in the marathon. What marathon are you running and do you have a goal time?

More miles never hurt anyone either, just a refernece, in 2012 I ran 2700 miles and my average pace was 6.9 mph. In 2013 I ran 3924 miles and my average pace was 6.6 mph and I pr'd at both the marathon and half marathon distances. When running high miles it is important to keep your easy days easy and running slower can help on the injury front too. The mileage still stresses your body but not as much as if you tried to maintain a faster pace for all your runs. You still need to do speed work because you need those workouts too. I find myself dooing a lot of strides for my speed work these days, they are taxing but for a shorter distance and time. I still do intervals but usually only every other week and I do one decent milealge marathon pace run every other week too. Another type of run I have come to enjoy is a progressive run where every mile is fatser than the previous, I usually do these on 10-12 mile runs and try to run my last mile at 10k pace or faster.

Now this is what I do and it may not work for you.

Count me in ....commit myself to the 100 miles and since it will be a stretch to reach that goal I plan on keeping my eye on consistency rather than speed.
thanks

Thanks for the input.  I do have a time goal which is to break 4 hours.  Last race was 4:09 in October.  My race is the Phoenix Marathon on March 1st and it will be my 12th marathon.  PR is 3:06 about a million years ago and long term goal is to run Boston.

What baffles me is my last recent 5k was 21:12 but as the distances get greater I get further from the running calculators.  I feel like I have a pretty good base but haven't been able to get anywhere near where I want to be beyond a 5k.  I feel like I've made good strides this Fall/Winter but have a marathon monkey on my back.  I think I'll stay the course I've set but go a little longer, a little slower while staying with a little speed and strength work.  Pull back when I need to.

Had a great start to the new year.  Weather was perfect for this time of the year.  Mid-40's, dead calm, light misty fog.  8 miles out and back on my favorite trail.  Tried to keep things nice and easy.  A tri buddy of mine came up behind me at about 6.5 miles into the run.  He was out for 13.  We chatted for about a mile before realizing I was at close to 10k pace.  Yikes.

I am off and running! 3 easy miles split between the trainer session. This run concluded the holiday running challenge where I tallied around 153 miles. Actually Considering continuing the streak longer, well for at least as long as my legs agree!

Welp...wasn't the best run...but I did it. Chilly out today...I'm a bad runner when the temps go under 70 degrees. As pathetic as that sounds. 0_o

Distance: 4.02 miles
Time: 39:33 minutes

4 miles down...96 to go......lol

Nice to see so many in the challenge, here!

Good stuff everybody!

I am deep in Disney and promise more attention after the week ends. Nice job to start. Keep it going-and don't forget to put your weekly totals down on Sunday for me.
