We keep it pretty cold in our house. Weekday program has it turn on at 7:30am and back off at 8:15am (while the wife is in the shower/bathroom getting ready). Then it is down at 55 all day until 4:30 when it goes back up to 62. Stays at 62 until 9:00pm when it goes down to 50 (we like to sleep cold).

Weekends we keep it at 63 when we are home. I will go up to 65 and turn on the living room fireplace when we have company. It does get cold but blankets and sweatshirts are free.

I have a manual thermostat so it varies wildly... I don't go over 70 when I'm at home, but if I'm doing housework or am warm from working out it's below 65. I usually keep it in the low 60s at night and run a space heater for 4 hours while I go to sleep (it turns off automatically). I turn it down to 50 when I leave the house, thought it only gets down that far when it's realllly cold out. I live in a rowhouse and it heats up very quickly. I basically have no desire for a programmable thermostat- but my schedule isn't regular and I have only myself to please.

I remember years ago a story in the paper about a lady who was on public assistance, bemoaning that she kept her house at 72* during the winter because of how expensive the gas was, and that she only went out to Red Lobster once a month. My friends and I (recent college graduates) were like, that sounds like luxury!

Although it's nice to sit by the fire in the 4-season and gaze out at the snow.

Another geothermal heater - set and forget - 70-73 all year long.

On cold days we'll burn wood in the fireplace which keeps the geo from working and bedroom temp drops a few degrees. Nicer for sleeping.

When I had a programmable thermostat, we'd have temps vary throughout the day.  Current place has a dumb thermostat, so I manually adjust it to 63 when I leave and up to 66-68 if I'm there.  (Winter settings, summer A/C is about the opposite, 80F during the day and 77F when I'm there.)

I have a old school tab adjusted thermostat (soon to be replaced)

58-60 during the day
63-65 in afternoon/night when I come home

never have to worry about extra blankets my german shepherd who sleeps on the bed keeps me toasty warm (even if he is a bed hog)

What is this thing called winter? What is a heater? (I have one of those. He's fifteen pound cat who likes to snuggle.) Here it's all about AC settings. 24 at home pretty much year-round, whatever that it. 23 in my classroom. Probably about 75 degrees Farenheit. In winter I can sometimes do without it most of the day and night if I keep the fan on.

Thanks for the reminder, I have to re-program mine tonight. Someone reset ours to be at 66 all of the time. It used to be programmed to.

6AM-8AM: 66
8AM-3PM: 60
3PM-11PM: 66
11PM-6AM: 62

The only time this was a problem was if you were sick and stayed home from work. Wake up at 6 and call in and then wake up again at 10AM freezing to death.

We did 66 day and 60 night for years. Our thermostat was not able to be replaced with programmable one due to the zones and wires. We have people at home day and night so we didn't have option really to lower during the day.

Last year we invested in 2 pellet stoves(one on each side of the house)  and upgraded a wood burning stove. For first time in years our house was 74 during the day in the main part of the house, and around 60 upstairs in bedrooms at half the cost of oil.

Now that oil is dropping, oil may be slightly cheaper but it is cooler in our house with oil heat. Plus we did buy 6 tons of pellets that are bought and paid for with 3 tons left for rest of the season.

I'm reading Phil Gaimon's book Pro Cycling on $10 a Day and I came across this last night. Jeremy Powers is giving Gaimon advice

“How can you be fast when you have to wear a jacket in your own house?” he asked. “You can sit here and half- this thing, and you’ll always make $20,000 a year, or you could do it right, invest in yourself, and make 10 times that. You know you have the talent, so stop being scared! 

So maybe time to turn the heat up.
