Subject: Rest Days Are Difficult
I know they're good for the mind, body, spirit. But I have a hard time with rest days. It just seems as though I should be out training. There was a day when I wasn't disciplined enough to take them, but I do now, and do reap the benefit. It took me a while to learn that the body needs rest to heal, and the mind needs rest to avoid burn-out.

Anyone else feel this way?

Yep.  I hate rest days, but you are right we all need them.

I second that frustration.  Yesterday was a rest day....and to make matters worse I left work on time.  It hit me around 8:00 that I had nothing to do...I was bored out of my mind.

On my scheduled rest days I typically lift weights.  Not really a rest but I rest the legs.

I third that.  On rest days I'm like a caged dog just pace back and forth.  Even worse is a nice weather rest day.

I also get the urge to sometimes do just a little on a rest day, but a little is never enough.  I try to stretch extra long on rest days, and ususally twice.  I have also found that on rest days I spent a lot more time in the morning on this site, which is fun.

At a minimum I swim on my rest days and have tried to convince myself that is "rest enough". So yeah, it's hard to take rest days!

I find that taking one rest day doesn't make that much of a difference for me, if I really want to recover I need two days off.  I don't like even taking one day off though!  I try to go for a walk or something, just to keep active... it's hard to go from training to being completely sedentary..

I'm in agreement with everyone. I have a hard time taking them but I know they are definately needed. My biggest problem is I'm still eating like a horse on my rest day.....

I've only recently started using a structured training plan and historically haven't had official 'rest days'. However, several more 'off days' were forced on me under the previous regime because of injuries and stress.

The injuries one is obvious - not only did I lose time to injury but I then had to gradually reintroduce myself to training and rebuild my confidence and anxieties over the worry the injury may reoccur.

The reduced stress levels have surprised me. When I was training every day I found it adversely affected my motivation - I was tired, my performance was suffering and I skipped some sessions (which have the associated guilt later in the day). With a rest day I can maintain my performance through the week and have no problem hitting each session with vigour.

So because of all that I look forward to my rest days and enjoy them. I wallow in a rest day like it's a hot bath and in my mind it seems like I can actually feel my body taking a breather and gearing itself up for the week ahead.

I would type more but it's a rest day…..

My problem with rest days is they are kind of addicting. By that I mean that for me it is harder to go back to working out the day after a rest day. Today is a rest day for me and I would really like to be out riding right now. But, by tommorow I will probably not feel that way. Crazy.

I desperately needed a rest and have learned to take them. Everytime I rush back to the gym after a race I seem to get sick which is worse than having a couple of rest days.

One more for me then back to the gym in prep for my next race.

When I first started training I looked forward to a rest day.  After having 3 in a row over the weekend (unintentionally), I was chomping-at-the-bit to get out there!!

I feel the same way now.  6 months ago it was the exercise I hated,  now it is the NOT exercising.  Odd isn't it?  Maybe we need to start (or attend) an exercise addiction clinic.

In the same boat here.  I could probably use more two day rests as well sometimes as the vols increase.

Rest becomes a 4 letter word to triathletes. I think we all get addicted to the endorphin rush. But it is crucial to rest. The body accumulates a lot of damage from training. If we don't let it heal, then problems creep up.

I'm learning the hard way that its a lot easier to take rest days and recovery weeks than taking a month or two off due to injury.

I'm appreciating my rest days more and more.  I used to not actually rest on them and eventually I got really run down and sick.  I've realized that they are important and I should use them.  Of course, you can get into the pattern of having too many and then it's hard to get started again.

Sounds like everyone that claims to "hate" rest days and find themselves bored? Needs to rethink a couple priorities and/or learn to enjoy a good book/movie/TV show...although saying you 'hate' rest days DOES make you sound more hardcore... I am not hardcore.

I like non-training days because those are the days I get to BBQ, go to a college football game, sleep in, tinker on the car, go to a picnic, make an extra pot of coffee and finish the Times crossword, take a nap, play fetch with the dogs for 2 hours, Home Depot run, SPEND MORE TIME WITH THE GF, etc.

Finding a way to enjoy off days might make training days MORE fun...

I look forward to rest days. I always look at it that I've earned it.  Sometimes I'll even train harder the day before in anticipation that I get the day off.

On the other hand, I recently had to take a week off due to some discomfort in my knee. I hated it and it's good to be back even if it's been easy workouts so far.

I love rest days - but I'm not hardcore, either.  It's just nice sometimes to come home after work, wash a few clothes and hang out with the hubby. Plus, I find that if I miss my Sunday nap (which is usually my rest day), the rest of the week is off.

It sounds like for a lot of people, it takes more discipline to schedule a rest day than it does to ride for 2+ hours. I think that belongs in the "you know you're a tri-dork when..." thread.

Even worse than a rest day is a recovery week! I'm on day 2 of my recovery week and I'm suffering withdrawl...my hands are shaky...my mood is sour...I don't know if I can make it!! I think I'm an addict Hello, my name is Alaina, and I'm a triathoholic....

I hate rest days. I know they are essential, but I don't like them. I had a rest day yesterday and got really crabby. I am not hardcore, I need that energy outlet.

Does it though?  If you are whippin' the horse enough when you do train, you might be begging for a rest day.  It might work on those outside the tri world that are on perpetual rest days, but seems like someone begging to be injured to someone with even my pea brain of tri knowledge.
