65 , Tennessee | Subject: Do you do flip turns ? I usually do flip turns during my main set so I don't slow down too much but not during drills or kicks. Are they really necessary or the best option? Do you do them when swimming 50s, 100s, 200s, ect.? Does it matter? I always seem to lose some breath after a turn. Edited by turnip13 2015-10-13 9:14 PM |

Which is exactly why you should keep doing them. |

When I first learned to swim at the young age of 30, my teacher insisted that I learn flip turns because she said it would keep me more focused and help me build endurance. I keep doing them because I feel like I lose so much momentum when I do an open turn. Is it possible I never learned open turns properly? For that matter, is "open turn" the right term for coming up for a breath and pushing off the wall? |

Popcorn please......Settle in [to the OP, you may find you've dropped a bit of a bomb that will tick for a while, and then go off. For some reason people get very emotional on the flip turn issue, it has spawned some truly great threads. All I will say is watch swimmers that are good, and do what they do] Edited by ChrisM 2015-10-14 12:07 AM |

Absolutely, 100% keep doing them all the time (for front crawl and backstroke...not for breast or fly...wouldn't want to get you DQed ). Your breath will come, as frustrating as it can be. Not on flip turns (I frankly don't think I could do an open turn if I tried), but I have been working on my push off and feel ya. I was always breathing right off my turn and it was slowing me down quite a bit, but I had the same issue and would always be gasping for breath if I took a stroke first, but I made a concerted effort to force myself to take a stroke first after each turn and within a couple weeks, there was no issue. I've actually added to that again where I now do a couple dolphin kicks as well, and it was the same story; out of breath and gasping for a couple of days but when I stuck with it I was fine. So I went from coming immediately out of a turn and breathing (and coming to a grinding hault) to now being much more smooth and saving a couple strokes in the process. It's uncomfortable at first, but keep at it and the discomfort will go away faster than you think and you'll be much better off. Also, it is your diaphragm that triggers the breathing reflex. Exhaling will alleviate that impulse. Breath out during your entire turn but leave a bit of air for your push off then, when you get that urge, exhale a bit and it will stave off that trigger for a monent. |

There are two types of swimmers; those that pee in the pool, and those that lie about not peeing in the pool. Edited by 3mar 2015-10-14 5:21 AM |

Pro 6011 Camp Hill, Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: Do you do flip turns ? My standard response: Yes, I do flip turns. No, you don't need to do them. Yes, they will make you a better swimmer and triathlete. It's the same as bike handling skills like riding in a pace line. They're not necessary to race fairly well in non-drafting triathlons, but they will make you a better cyclist and triathlete.

Done well, they're only a few tenths of a second slower than a flip turn. Stay low in the water, touch the wall, drop your shoulder away from the wall as you flip your feet towards the wall, then push off hard in a tight streamline as you do in a flip turn. There's no hanging on the wall or taking multiple breaths. There isn't time for that. Here's a good video of open turns with Rebecca Soni doing breast stroke, but it's similar if you're doing front crawl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dD6-HmQtMkw

If we are going for degree of difficulty points - using a kick board for pull buoy when there's not enough at practice. They occasionally fly out on turn. Then all hell can break loose when you try to get it back and not jam up your lane. Edited by Goggles Pizzano 2015-10-14 7:33 AM |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Do you do flip turns ? I can do a flip turn with a pull buoy and paddles, or with fins, or in a wetsuit, and in less than two feet of water (and I'm not particularly short). I can even do flip turns and swim in my sleep (really--my HS coaches would verify this!), but the kick board flip turn has always defeated me.I know there are a few people at masters who can do them. I think I can safely say that kick board flips are not a terribly relevant skill for triathlon, and in my case, discretion in the form of an open turn with a kick board is the better part of valor--I would be popping the board into the face of the person behind me if I flipped. |

Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: Do you do flip turns ? I can do them, and sometimes I do, but invariably I get water up my nose which leads to sinus irritation which leads to sinusitis which leads to respiratory infection which leads to missed training, so I do "underwater open turns" instead. I've got sensitive sinuses apparently. I've worked on my breathing techniques, I've tried nose plugs, but in the end the underwater open turn is my best answer. I'll sacrifice flip turns rather than risk illness. |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Do you do flip turns ? I like to do flip turns, but it depends who I'm sharing a lane with. The guy a shared a lane with this morning does his own thing on send off intervals and has issues staying on his side of the lane.. Sometimes I needed to pause and take a quick peek to check where he was.

I'll sacrifice flip turns rather than risk illness. My teenage kids being the fish that they are (10+ years on swim teams) have evolved to be able to use their upper lip to block their nostrils. We all had a good laugh at dinner one night a long time ago when they thought everyone can do that and my wife & I had to prove them wrong! |
