Just curious about what kind of trainer set up everyone has. I live in a 6 bedroom house and somehow my wife has managed to keep me in the garage. The garage is perfectly fine in the summer but geeez in the winter when its 30 or below, it sucks! I have to start out my rides with a pullover until I start sweating and then it comes off. And you HAVE to have a fan blowing so that makes it that much colder. All of the rooms in my house are carpeted and so my wife claims that when I set up in those rooms it starts smelling like sweat, even though I always put a towel on the ground under me. So just an interesting topic to me, where do you set up?

If I do have to use that god forsaken trainer, it's in a spare room.  It's also carpeted, but I use a yoga mat under the bike, then towels over that.  I also found that if I wear a Under Armor long sleeve heat gear shirt, the sweat doesn't drip off of me at my elbows.  Mainly from my legs, chin, and wrists.  Since I also have a towel over my handlebars, that towel catches most of the sweat from my chin and wrists...it's just whatever is coming off my legs I need to worry about.

Well toxicdonkey is a reference to how much and the chemical makeup of my sweat!. So I had to get the pad, towels and take appropriate measures to contain the sweat from expanding out past my boundaries! Wifey taken care of no matter where I went as long as no trail was left behind. Umm your own laundry basket is key with Febreeze Sport a must.

Then I wanted to commandeer the 3rd floor/rec room of my house and the kids and I battled a bit at first. Imagine teenagers snoozing gloriously, game controllers still lodged in their grubby little claws and being woken up to a man in spandex at a god awful 5 a.m. on a Saturday.

So then came some education on both sides.
They started throwing my bike trainer and pad around and I started unhooking the play station, locking the thermostat and hiding the controllers. Finally we agreed that they would move the bike, pad and anything on the pad in one piece out of the way gently and I would leave the Ps2 or whatever it was alone and allow them some AC when playing (I know, I am sooo sweet). I have since come to love whatever device that is cause I now have Sons of Anarchy, Peaky Blinders and a plethora of documentaries via Netflix. I can churn through these torturous trainer rides with a some minor enjoyment.

Good luck, the garage is great for drinking beer and fixing your other bikes, right?!

Mine's actually lodged in the 6ft of space between my furnace/water heater and my foundation wall. Both mine and my wife's bikes are smashed in there, so it doesn't leave a lot of room for much else. Also, there's no TV connection or anything, but I do bring my laptop down and have a speaker I can hook into. Depending on the recorded volume of whatever it is that I'm watching, I may even be able to hear it over the trainer noise!

Basement. Turned an unfinished area into a little home gym simply by putting down cheap gym floor squishy tiles wall-to-wall and hooking up a cheap flat screen TV. Treadmill and bike trainer and some free weights/yoga stuff down there. I also bought this fun wall decal off of Etsy.

I too am a BIG time sweater, my scene around the bike and trainer looks like it was prepared by Dexter.

i too have been banished to the garage. Used to do the deck but it ends up too hot in summer and cold in winter. Actually like being out there. Can open up door if not too windy or cold. I usually take my 2 dogs to get them out of the house. That seems to keep my wife happy if she is making breakfast or dinner. They love just lying on my astroturf matts.

It's a nice dedicated space between our wknd car and my surfboards. Best part is I don't have to constantly set up bike and trainer and move out of the way. Tri bike will stay there all winter.

Also invested in a $15 wifi extended so I can now watch shows on Netflix and HBOGo on one laptop and Trainer Rd or Zwift on the the other. Set up on a cheap little table along with snacks and drink.

I'm in the basement now. Ruining the hardwood floor banished me from the house. My basement has a drain in the center to safely whisk the sweat away. I sweat by the bucket full. It's cold but warmed slightly from the output of my wife's wine cellar's condenser. I start with a jacket but end up with a fan and shirtless by the end of a session

I started like that but admit that I am spoiled now. I worked from home and built a nice 20 x 11 home office in the basement that included sound insulation and laminate flooring. I dont do that job anymore so now it has the trainer and my treadmill in it and is just about perfect.

Ah, garage trainer bliss, yup I'm with ya.  Except I live in FL and summer time is a b!tch of a time to get in a quality WO, I need good RI to recovery from intense intervals and I have 3 fans on me.  2 small focus fans and a box type fan.

In Saigon, it's a spare bedroom that I've made into a study/exercise room. Nothing elaborate. I have my road and tri bikes stored in there, and usually have the tri bike on the trainer. (I actually have a spare trainer that I got from a departing colleague, in the so far fruitless hopes that somebody someday might want to work out with me, and as a backup when I was having some issues with my trainer last year.) Anything else I need (snacks, workout directions, HR zone chart, etc.) is on a desk chair that I put next to the bike. Towel on the aerobars, and I sweat on the yoga mat under the bike. Especially considering my size, I'm really good at sweating! One fan, on top of some plastic storage bins. And of course AC--but it only goes down to high 60's, and the house isn't insulated--it's usually in the high 70's when I ride early AM.

Entertainment consists of Youtube videos (mostly by a bunch of Germans who shoot "Virtual Cycling" footage all over Europe, plus some of Kona and other races) and occasionally an MP3 player. The Euro videos have music which is conveniently 85-90 BPM, which helps with keeping cadence up. Most workouts are "supervised" by Smudgee, my 15 pound bobtail cat who sits on the desk near the computer (occasionally he blocks the video, and I have to pause to move his bulk) and stares and meows balefully at me, wanting me to make a better choice and rub his tummy.

From my "cave", I have a view of a fairly busy residential intersection, and all my neighbors out jogging and dog-walking as it starts to get light. My cave is right above two noodle shops, so I also get to smell the pho cooking most mornings.

In Oregon, it's the deck behind our house in summer, where I can spy on our neighbor's backyard over the fence (I'm a neighborhood spy on two continents ). In winter, in previous years I am usually relegated to the garage (with no Internet), but owing to a renovation project this winter, I was allowed to occupy a corner of my dad's study (and thus able to view my videos on his computer when he was otherwise occupied).

Our house has a second "formal" living room, but we are not formal room type people. I have my trainer set up in there as well as a yoga matt and the snazzy new smart TV that I got for xmas.

I'm set up in my insulated garage. So far its only dropped below 60 once or twice even on the coldest morning. Wifi but no tv yet.

I appreciate the sympathy from you guys - I will remember it tonight as I embark on yet another trainer ride!

Once I can get some of these darned kids out of my house, I have plans for a room or two. Any bets on whether or not I'll get my way?

I built mine in the basement a year ago so I can deal with the Chicagoland winters. I LOVE it! I tend to train down there sometimes when I should be outside. I use it a lot in the summer too since it's dark when I get home and just safer than being on the road. The wife decided to move in down there too

I'm in the master bedroom - bike set up right by the bed so I can see the TV. Told my husband that I either get the spare room (that he uses for an office) or our room since he won't let me keep my bike in the main room. No way I would be in the garage - tried that for a while and it just didn't work - either too hot or too cold and I don't feel like breathing in the air in there.

I sweat a TON - my students in my cycle classes make fun of my puddles on the floor after class. I put a large yoga mat underneath the bike/trainer and put a fresh towel under my bike each ride, along with a towel across the aerobars to catch some of the moisture.
So far so good and no ruining the carpet.

I would LOVE to have my own exercise room, but maybe when one of the kids go to college - but that is YEARS away! So far this set up works but I do wish I had a basement.

I find it interesting that most comments here are husbands saying where their wives would let them set everything up. In my house it's the opposite.

The triathlon bike vs. road bike quandary. Before you even ask the road bike vs. tri bike question, you should have a couple sprint triathlons or duathlons under your belt.
